The Conversation Parlor / Tea anyone?
« on: April 02, 2012, 04:11:35 AM »
Here's something for those of you who enjoy a nice cup of tea.
You all know Alex Chin, the designer of the Seasons playing cards, don't you? Here's his next project:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/961921619/mood-garden-interactive-fair-trade-and-non-gmo-tea?ref=live

My pledge went to the $8 tier for now, but I should upgrade it if my budget allows. I'm especially curious about the Energetic variety. What about you? ;D

Okay guys, John was going to post this but as you all know, he was banned for sharing industry secretives, so I'm doing it instead.

I know a lot of you are in love with magic finish for various reasons, but air cushion also has its advantages. From a strictly handling point of view(with no regards to durability), which one do you personally prefer? I'm curious to see how many of you still have a preference for good old air cushion.

GO!

Playing Card Plethora / HOPC(House Of Playing Cards) by The Blue Crown
« on: March 08, 2012, 08:05:31 PM »
So I just got a newsletter about this, but it doesn't say anything about what it actually is, only how "awesome and revolutionary" it supposedly is. What do you guys think they're up to?

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Aristocrat history and different backs?
« on: March 02, 2012, 02:25:50 PM »
Hey guys, my interest for Aristocrat decks has been growing over the past few weeks and I've been trying to find more information about the brand's history, old back designs, etc. but I've had very limited success so far. All I could find was a bunch of pictures of a few design variations.

If you guys have any information about anything Aristocrat-related, I'd love to learn more.
Here are a few pictures I found:

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Top retention... Scissor cut?
« on: February 01, 2012, 05:33:11 PM »
Hey guys, I was sketching for the group deck with a deck of tallies next to me, Queen of Clubs on top for reference. You guys should know it's hard to resist handling a deck that's in front of you, right?

Well, since I need to keep the Queen on the top of the deck, I tried doing a scissor cut while keeping the top card in place, and I was mostly successful, but the cut looked pretty sloppy.
Do you guys think it would be possible to make this kind of thing consistent so that only the top card stays and it always looks smooth?

Feel free to discuss possibilities with other cuts as well. I'd be quite interested if someone came up with a solution for the charlier cut. :P

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Tricks that don't look like tricks
« on: January 29, 2012, 08:40:23 PM »
Hey guys, as some of you may have noticed by now, I'm not a big fan of fancy magic, but there is a category of tricks that I really love, and for lack of a better name, I call them tricks that don't look like tricks.
Something that could be performed as a demonstration of skill rather than using the abstract notion of "magic", if you know what I mean.
They often have a gambling-like theme in the performance.

Here are some examples:

Do you guys have any other tricks that fit into this category? I'd love to see more of them.

Playing Card Plethora / Hanafuda cards update - linen finish!
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:40:01 AM »

My oh so lovely backers!
We did it! We stormed the castle, we slayed the dragon, and now we will loot all the treasure. That treasure, your rewards, are now swinging into high gear as I collect all your reward information, prep the files for manufacture and send them to print. Of course, this will take a few weeks to complete and for Amazon and Kickstarter to release the funds. In the meantime, a quick little update regarding the status of manufacturing.
About a week ago, I told you that I was looking to create a better product for you with the opportunity for stretch goals. Since then, you have managed to simultaneously blow my mind, my stretch goal ideas, and my initial $6000 funding goal out of the water. In total, I am 209% over my intended goal and I would like to show you my gratitude with some wicked extra credit for you fine folks.
Every deck will now come with 12 quick reference monthly cards putting the deck at 60 cards total. You can use these monthly reference cards to keep track of turns as well as teach new people the monthly suites. On top of the quick reference cards, each deck will contain an instruction manual with a more in depth discussion of the suites and rules for my favorite hanafuda game, Koi Koi. I'm still waiting for a final quote, but the goal here is to have the cards printed on a higher quality paper with a nice linen finish.
So, that's where we stand! As always, you can contact me through Kickstarter if you have any questions about how to proceed or leave a comment below. I'm super excited for this next part of the process and I can't wait to send you my hanafuda deck. Again, keep an eye out for your backer information survey and thank you everyone for your support!
Keep it classy!
-Sarah

If you had to always use the same deck for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Keep in mind the design, handling AND price of the deck in question. You'd have to buy a lot to last a whole life. ;)

If I could afford it, I would have to go with Artifice. A slightly less expensive option would be the blue Crown deck, and if money was a bigger issue, my choice would go to blue Tally-Ho fan-backs.

The reason for my first two options is simple: both have my favorite combination of stock and finish to date.

Design & Development / The Discourse Gallery

I'm sure you have noticed that we have some talented artists here, but why limit ourselves to playing cards?
I'm curious to see what you guys have to show off. Portfolio pieces, midnight sketches, web design, whatever - just post some of your favorite creations. ;)

Alright, I'll start, since I'm the one creating the thread. Here's something I'm working on right as we speak. It's just the beginning, but I quite like the look of it so far so I'll share it with you.
And before you ask, no, it's not meant to be a Queen design. ::)

Playing Card Plethora / USPC Steampunk decks?
« on: January 13, 2012, 09:06:29 PM »
I just found this article on 52cartes:
http://52cartes.wordpress.com/2012/01/12/bicycle-steampunk-deck-infos-supplementaires/
The "generic" version they refer to seems to be a standard USPCC deck with steampunk backs. The faces have standard colors, the jokers have the USPC logo instead of the word "Joker" and thebox is a standard cardboard box without embossing.

The article says the "generic" version come swith a blank face card instead of the double backer, and the box has a seal on it.

It seems Pokestud52 is currently selling them.

Fake or just really stupid?

Playing Card Plethora / Gilded edges on the Aladdin 1002
« on: January 04, 2012, 03:26:42 AM »
Has anyone tried the Aladdin 1002 decks? I'd be interested in knowing if the gilding on the edges affects the performance in any negative way. It looks really interesting, and changes from the usual white edges that we get even on black decks. ::)

Playing Card Plethora / Hanafuda cards on kickstarter
« on: December 26, 2011, 11:57:09 AM »
I stumbled upon this a couple days ago:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sarahehthomas/modern-hanafuda?ref=live

I know those are very different from poker cards and don't really fit in a collection, but I still think they could be an interesting item to own, because the cards are pretty, and because I like seeing the variations in card games from different cultures. :)

The Conversation Parlor / Package from Ellusionist

So my package came in today. ;D
Pictures here:

Lots of nice stuff in there. And I kept a sealed LTD for my collection of course. :D I'm currently sharpie-ing the edges of my shadow masters, and then I'll be playing with my Artifice to break them in.

The Conversation Parlor / Dealing in a casino
« on: December 22, 2011, 12:11:51 AM »
Has any of you ever considered the idea of becoming a casino dealer?
It just crossed my mind today, I've been researching it a little and it seems dealers where I live get a pretty awesome pay... And what better way to put your card handling skills to use? ::)

I haven't found anything yet regarding the formation in my area, though, but I thought it could make an interesting idea to discuss anyway. I know the job would involve a reasonable amount of stress, but I still think it could be a pretty interesting option.

Oh, and on an unrelated note, Lindor chocolate is ridiculously delicious. Just saying.

The Conversation Parlor / How do you store/display your collection?
« on: December 20, 2011, 01:12:08 AM »
I've been thinking about this today. How do you guys store or display you cards collection? I'd like to see some pictures, it might give me ideas for mine, as well as making an interesting thread. ::)

;D Words cannot express how excited I am. See order below. Shipping is 2 to 6 weeks.

And also, I'm looking into getting a blue porper clip sometime in the near future... Do you guys have any sellers to recommend for a good price and not too outrageous shipping (being Canadian)?
I want the plain one without the blue crown logo, by the way.

Design & Development / Wonderland deck official thread
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:11:29 AM »
Hey, I'm currently getting in the process of designing a new deck and need some advice :)
To save time and for convenience I'll copy-paste a part of my UC thread:
Quote
I was wondering if there was any specific guidelines to follow for the court cards in order to respect the standard pattern. I know about the weapons, head directions etc. but I wanted to be sure that I'm not missing anything. I'm going for custom faces AND pips.

Also, my first design(not necessarily final) is a full-bleed design with fade-to-black borders, and I'm kinda worried about ink chipping as I've heard it usually happens on black decks. What exactly causes the chipping and is it really an issue or just a result of not taking care of your cards?

Well, there we go, those two points are all I can think of for now, but any extra advice is welcome of course :)
