Whats up guys?
How did everyone do with the eastern blizzard we got? I live on long island (20 mins from the fork) and man we got a ton of snow. Looking outside there's a good 2 feet where I am.

The Conversation Parlor / Galvanic Comic Book Series
« on: January 21, 2013, 09:22:38 PM »
Hey Everyone,
I wanted to show you a project of mine that's currently in development. I've always wanted to break into the comic book scene and recently took the initiative to do so.

What was supposed to be an animated short film, turned out to be overwhelming for one person to handle. These films consist of modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting, rendering, compositing, editing etc etc. So rather than throwing out my designs I turned to one of my closed passions and hobbies: Playing Cards.

Now I want to push myself further. This story has been in my head for years and want to tell everyone I could. So I thought why not bring everything into a comic book series?

Below is the start of the first issue in the run.

Plot:
Our world has ended and another begins.
Robotic intelligence has been created to survive the human apocalypse.
Their purpose: to study earth and our universe in ways we could have never imagined.
Galvanics are a race all on its own and consist of individual thought and
feelings. They have a core power source in their chest which is what gives them life. Without it being present, their life is terminated.
However, Galvanics aren't the only race that survived. Now it's a race to be the last ones standing and protect the Galvanic cores.

I would love to one day have this has a monthly series and to be in print.
It will consist of cgi art and everything is done by me. This includes the 3d models, rendering, texturing, touch ups, outlines, lettering, lighting and story.

Well what do you guys think?
I would love honest feedback to help me out.
Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this!

Design & Development / Lucent Playing Cards by Sean Whelan
« on: November 14, 2012, 09:00:32 PM »
Hey Guys!
First off I apologize for not really being active on the boards. I do however visit everyday to check the post and see whats going on in the playing card community. I just don't have the time to respond back as often as I would like.

As most of you know I am the creator/designer behind the Galvanic deck that launch on Kickstarter a few months back. I have plans on releasing a sequel to that deck call Surge and will be the counter part to the storyline. However, do the amount of work is involved in the trailer (yes there will be a 5 min 3d animated trailer that shows and explains who the Galvanics are, how the Surges were created and what will come of the future : D ) I have chosen to release a whole new deck before hand. The Surge will be released early in the year.

Now Lucent is a whole new deck on its own. No storyline attached, just good old fashioned design. I have plans to hit Kickstarter some time next month after I talk to uspcc.

Here are some images to show you what I've been working on and would love some feedback!

Here is some answers to your questions:
- fully custom deck (pips, back, ace, joker, tuck etc etc)
- WILL be a Bicycle deck (however if I get enough feedback and pledged It will be a deck of cards all on its own)
- 2500 deck print run
- Magic Finish and Aristocrat Stock
- Amazing rewards that have never been done before on a playing card deck : D

The Conversation Parlor / New York Comic Con: Whos going?
« on: September 11, 2012, 03:58:48 PM »
Hey Guys,
So besides having a passion for playing cards, anyone else love comics?? Anyone going to Ny Comic Con next month? I'm asking because I thought it would be pretty cool to meet some of you. I purchased a weekend pass months ago and I'm so excited for this years event.

If enough people go I would love to hang out, perform some effects, talk and actually meet some of you here on the forums.

So besides the question above: What are some of your favorite comic characters? Mine: Green Lantern, Batman, Transformers (#1 fav since I was like 5), The Darkness, Avengers, Captain America and spawn. Half of these btw were inspirations to the Galvanic deck : D

Hey Everyone!
I want to thank everyone for the success of the recent Galvanic deck from Kickstarter. After a long break from designing I recently went back to work on the villain deck. This deck will follow the storyline that the Galvanic deck introduced. Now here is a sneak peak of whats to come in the future!

Playing Card Plethora / How is the finish applied to the cards?
« on: May 31, 2012, 02:42:56 PM »
Hey Everyone,
I've been wondering about this for years. It might be a trade secret for uspcc but I just wanted an overall idea. How is the finish applied to the playing cards? Do you think they are sheet-fed and sprayed on or some kind of other method? This has nothing to do with making my patter better or anything like that. I just want to know because playing cards are a huge hobby of mine much like everyone here. I think it would be pretty interesting to know.

Thanks!!

The Conversation Parlor / Shipping Out Playing Cards
« on: May 25, 2012, 12:29:27 AM »
Hey Everyone,
I'm creating this thread to hopefully getting some feedback on shipping costs. For those of you who don't know, I'm the designer behind the Galvanic Playing Cards. I found out day from uspcc that the production run is 100% complete and I will be getting the decks shipped to my house next week. During this time I would really like to plan out the shipping to all my backers.

After doing some research I found that the uspc flat rate boxes were the best way to go. They start at $5.15 a package and can hold up to 70 lbs. Do you guys have any other suggestions for me? This is my first time doing this so this is why I need as much feedback as possible.

Thank you!

Hey Everyone,
I created this thread to show what I have created so far for an upcoming deck. Before I created the Galvanic deck, I've always wanted to see a true irish deck hit the market. Well I bring to you the Gaelic Edition. Now that the Galvanic designs are done and are now waiting to hit the press I decided I wanted to break away from that series for now and start fresh. This is the back design thus far and will be improving it as well as creating various other designs down the road. If I get enough positive feedback then by all means another Kickstarter will launch in the near future.

Thoughts on the back design so far?
Thanks!

Playing Card Plethora / Linen Vs Magic Finish
« on: May 01, 2012, 03:08:49 PM »
Hey Guys,
So I had a question thats bugging my mind. I know uspcc has cut down to only a few different finishes. However, the Aristocrat Banknotes say they use Linen finish. Do they truly use Linen finish or is it Magic? If so what is the difference between the two finishes??

Thanks!

Design & Development / New Deck Design
« on: May 01, 2012, 02:35:28 AM »
Hey Everyone,
Since I'm waiting for my Galvanic deck to hit the press I figured I would open up photoshop and try to create some inspiration. Well that turned into this. Thoughts? Possible future Bee deck?

Thanks!

Design & Development / Ladybug Tattoo
« on: February 29, 2012, 12:41:42 AM »
Hey Everyone,
I wanted to get some feedback from those of you of a tattoo I'm designing for a close friend of mine. Its a long story between us and will be the only two people who know the true meaning behind it, but I would still love your input on the design. She will be getting this on the lower left pelvis area.

Design & Development / Playing Card Deck Stand
« on: January 18, 2012, 12:16:48 AM »
Hey Everyone,
Something popped into my head tonight which got me to work. There really isn't any kind of stands for playing cards or stands specifically made for decks themselves. Below are some mockup photos of a prototype I did tonight using my 3D software. Would you like to see this project continue? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Design & Development / To all 3D Modelers and Animators
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:35:56 AM »
Hey Guys,
Its been mentioned before but Ill say it again, we a have a lot of talented people going on this forums. So i thought I would switch it up rather then showing off your photoshop skills. Anyone who a 3D modeler or animator, or trying to learn this field??

If so, show what you have! Its a very tough field to break into since it takes a very long time to create something. Don't worry, we won't be too harsh. We'll explain what works and what doesn't with a reason not just because.

So if your working on a project or just relaxing having fun, upload some pictures for us to see.

I'll kick it off by showing my demo reel:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s34Rp5zK9OE

(yes I was the person to model the artifact coin and give it that distinctive look)
I'll also begin this thread by going over some basics for you people and hopefully it'll help.

3D Modelers:
-there is no correct way of doing things. It's all about creating your own technique and style. Some prefer low polygon models where others like myself prefer high polygon models.
-don't be afraid to watch tutorials or have books out in front of you while you work. Even Dreamworks and Pixar does this everyday. These type of programs are very very technical so don't expect to know everything.
-have a reference in front of you! do not go from the image in your head. If your creating a building or something outside, take a picture and open it up on the desktop to view. If your creating a water bottle or a remote...get one out and lay it on the desk. Look at it, see the shape, the edges etc etc and work off that.

Animators:
-again there is no correct way of doing things. Some prefer to go frame by frame where others do extremes and then in betweens.
-ACT IT OUT......ACT IT OUT......ACT IT OUT.....see that...3 times I said that. record yourself performing the action, repeat it 50 times even if your just moving an arm. You may look funny doing it but thats what it takes to make a smooth fluid animation.
-take your time with an animation...DO NOT RUSH!..in the field it takes about 6 months to produces a 30 second animation clips. When you watch a movie, everytime the camera angles change....yup thats a different animator.

And lastly, watch a lot of animation films. Not just 3d ones though. Stick with the basics first such as 2d disney films. They are the ones that changed animation history.

I look forward to seeing where this thread goes!

Thanks!

Design & Development / Follow up on Galvanic Playing Cards
« on: January 13, 2012, 04:56:15 PM »
Hey everyone!
Hows everyone's new year so far? I wanted to catch everyone up on the Galvanic playing cards progress. Yes unfortunately the first time around my Kickstarter page failed. No worries though, a second Kickstarter launch will happen within the next 2 months. Please follow me on Facebook by search Galvanic Playing Cards and make sure to like the page to get updates! : D
As of right now I retouched the current joker, ace and back designs to give it a little more umph. As an artist trying to showcase my skills, this project will happen no matter how many times I try!

Thanks!
