Title: Stealth Playing Cards [KS]
Post by: Don Boyer on November 24, 2012, 02:46:08 AM
So, we are now presented with another black deck:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1196374249/stealth-playing-cards

Those pips look (coughCOREcough) very familiar...

I can't wait to see the metallic "ingraving".  (What the hell is "ingraving"?  This guy presents himself as a professional designer and doesn't bother with even spellchecking, never mind proofreading?

But it's getting funded at a pretty quick clip, so...

PS: I don't think this is a USPC deck.

If it's not a USPC deck, who would make it?

I don't think it looks to bad, but from everything I've read on here combined with my own experience over the last couple days, this time of year is not the best time to start asking people for money.

There are quite a few printers both domestic and international that can and do print playing cards.  Only a rare few have the quality to match or surpass USPC.

This deck's pretty bland, and the trend in decks have moved away from black decks in general.  And it's damn expensive!

I asked him and he said Gr print was doing it

I just looked up GR Print.  They don't even list playing cards as one of their products!  These cards truly are in Stealth mode...  :))

The stock he mentioned is the same stock they use on a lot of their other projects, like postcards, event tickets, greeting cards and business cards.  It doesn't even sound like it will be black-core.  Hold a card back facing you up to a bright light, and without a black core you'll see the print on the other side!

Their stocks come in designations that aren't even used in the playing card business - the weight is listed in "points" instead of grams per square meter (gsm).

These facts don't inspire confidence in me that this will be a quality deck.  I'm all for using alternative companies to USPC, but not if the quality doesn't meet or exceed what USPC creates.

Don. What about CoughBrahmaCough. They didn't meet expectations with Reagan M's deck.

What about CoughBrahmaCough?  Are you catching a cold, 'cause I think you're giving it to me!  :))

I have samples of some of their other jobs, and some of them are actually rather exceptional.  Reagan's project suffered in no small part because his art was so dark, when printed it all looked like mud.  But since this deck ISN'T USING BRAHMA, what difference should that make?  :))  At least Brahma had experience in making playing cards.  I can't even find any straight information on the GR Print website about the stocks they use.  They're more concerned with the printing process and the file submissions.

And speaking of printing process, you would not believe the number of flaws they list as being part of the process they use, known as "gang printing".  They print multiple different projects on a single sheet of paper, all with varying requirements on color, features, etc.  It sounds terrible, but since it's cheap and efficient with use of paper, they don't seem to care.

The pips are a complete rip off of the Core deck!

Below, are 2 pictures. The picture of the shirt is from the Stealth deck, and the picture of just the pips is from the Core deck:

We already have a topic on this deck.  Please search next time to see if a topic already exists.  I'm merging them now.

The sad part is that the project might actually get funded  :mindf-ck:

Some people will fund anything, especially if it looks "cool".

If the pip design wasn't ripped off, if this was printed by uspcc and it wasn't so expensive, then I would have pledged for this deck, as it turns out though, the pips ARE ripped off, it's NOT printed by uspcc and it's overpriced. Therefore no money from me!!

I wouldn't mind the deck if it wasn't a blatant rip off of The Core pips and trying to capitalize on pricing due to Pedale's success.

It does look a lot like the pips used on the Core deck.  But to play devil's advocate, those pips are simple geometric shapes.  It's possible that this design, while nearly identical, could have been developed independently.

But the pricing?  And that it's from a relatively unknown printer?  It doesn't add up for me.  I rarely pay that much for a new, high-quality deck from a known and reliable printer.

I don't know who if anyone here backed this deck.  Apparently it's getting all KINDS of complaints from backers over at KS - it's the usual "where are my decks/why don't you update" situation.  The deck's creator came here recently to promote a NEW deck that's in Design/Dev stage, King of Kings.  I locked that topic today and asked that AKGraphx come here to provide updates on his present project before promoting any new ones.  So, if we're fortunate, perhaps we'll be hearing from him soon.
