Step 1: Figure out what you want to make.
Step 2: Contact USPCC for templates.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit.

^ Anyone that knows memes should understand the joke there. Here is Step 3 explained in fuller detail:

Find your strengths and weaknesses. If you have no experience in design or art, give up now. Hone your craft, and then try again later. If you DO have experience, make sure you focus on your strengths. For example, if you're awesome with Adobe's Pen Tool, consider a vector-art based deck (not to be confused with vector-images/filetypes which refer to the attributes of the file, and not the style of the artwork).

Dude, think about it.  Keep thinking about it until you think 'Of course it wasn't'.  Then you can stop thinking about it.

Really? Is this thread serious? ::)

1-Know what you want.
2-If you know nothing about cards, your design is probably gonna suck by collector's standards.
3-Do your research. Don't expect all the information to come right to you with no effort.
4-If you're doing this for money, stop right now, we don't want your deck.

Then get on it, that's how you start. ::)
Just keep in mind that deck design isn't for everyone. Are you confident in your ability to create something worthwhile that will grab our attention and make us want your deck out of all the custom decks available? If so, go for it, we'll be happy to help with our feedback.

Now that's what I call confidence. Keep in mind that the "best" deck is a matter of opinion, though. ;)

Haha this is probably the funniest thread in the design forum.

If you want to show us your imagination then you need to come up with the design and stuff without asking for help from others. Sure you can get pointers but a lot of the trail you need to blaze yourself. I'm sure you'll come up with something awesome if you take your time. Best of luck to you!

Hybrid, I don't know about your career in deck design, but you're definitely a good comedy writer!

Remember the most important part of any project, playing cards or otherwise: put your heart and soul into it, or quit now and go home.  The world is jam-packed with crappy decks that were given barely a thought when they were made by designers with $$$ in their eyes.  Having the skill alone isn't enough either - some decent artists have put out some not-so-decent decks.  People can see when someone puts their full effort into making their project - any kind of project - and that will determine how successful your deck has the potential to be.

Just reading this thread makes me laugh.
Hybrid, your going to want to do some research and if you think it will be the best deck of cards ever, then take a look at the vortex, mana, seasons, infinity, artifice, arcane, ornate, and tendril decks. (just a few awesome decks)

Designing a complete deck is a lot of work. A whole lot, that takes a lot of attention to detail. You really do need to be passionate about it, have a cool idea, and be technically proficient or it probably won't come together. You can do it, but it will take a lot of time and learning. Spend time on here, look at people's designs, buy decks and look at them carefully.

It also takes a lot of money, or a lot of marketing and planning.

@magicaddictz Thanks for lumping me in with those awesome decks. I'm trying hard. :)

Once your art is done, you'll want these: http://www.bicyclecards.com/catalogs/uspcPlayingCardTemplates.zip

And you'll submit it here: http://www.bicyclecards.com/products/custom-submit

And USPC will walk you through the rest.

Guys, we haven't even SEEN any of his work.  Maybe he's some kind of genius savant and they really will be the best deck of cards ever?

Hybrid, do you have any other drawings you've done that you could upload here?

While the kid's packed with a lot of youthful exuberance and what sounds like little experience, Kanped has a point - he could be a Rembrandt or Da Vinci in disguise.

Show us something, anything, from your portfolio of work, so we can get a good idea of your skill level as an artist.  We promise not to chew your head off.  Right, gang?   :D

I might also mention, having designed 'stuff' for a very long time, that no matter how amazing the ideas might be, there will be people that hate it. That's just the reality of the beast. Don't let that be a discouragement, just know that even if you are proud of it, and the majority love it, there will be plenty of folks that simply don't think you know what you are doing. :)

I'd be interested to see even a pencil sketch of the best deck ever, though I guess on the other hand if all you have is a sketch you certainly don't want to give away your ideas.
