Playing Card Plethora / Whether to open decks or not
« on: September 13, 2013, 07:54:18 PM »
Hello Discourse,
I have recently purchased a v1 Dan and Dave Variety box, I have opened two of the cheaper decks in it and have just come to the dilemma of whether to open any of the decks.
It has a magic-con v1 deck, S&M v3 smoke, v4, v5 denim and steamboats among other decks.
I am short on cash having after bought this had a problem arise where cash is needed and don't know whether I should open these decks, I've always wanted as close to a full smoke and mirror collection as possible but opening them would ruin the chance of ever selling them in the future.
They're too rare for me to perform magic with comfortably so I'm turning to you guys
What do you think I should do? :')

Playing Card Plethora / Fournier Le Casino Monte Carlo Decks
« on: June 09, 2013, 06:49:18 AM »
Hello there,
Yesterday I was in my local magic shop when I saw they had a two pack of fournier Monte-Carlo casino decks, the collector in me said yes so £15 later I have the decks.
I cannot find a thing about them!
They have a certificate of authenticity in Spanish and the two decks have Casino holographic security seals,
I opened one deck to see how they handled, the pink deck, they handle decently, they don't fan but they spring, cut and dribble amazingly.
The red deck has the words "one deck" on the tuck box, the two came in a plastic sleeve.
does anyone know anything of these decks?
I will attach some images
Thank you

A friend sent me these to look at:

I think the faces look good (the game is very good) and well stylised to the game but the backs need to be two way
What do you guys think?

I received my copy of this DvD yesterday and it is a brilliant mentalism set :)
The three tricks are as follows (copied from the description):
Quote
PASSCODE:
The spectator is asked if they have a passcode or lock set on their iPhone, and the performer reveals that thought of number without ever asking the spectator to write anything down. It's simple, direct and easy to perform.

NON-TOXIC:
A diabolical new method for an add a number routine. Imagine inviting multiple spectators to type in a number of their choice into the iPhone calculator, and multiply all their results together. The outcome is ALWAYS a number you've predicted ahead of time, and can even be your telephone number. This revolutionary revamp to the popular TOXIC method means that the spectators can make as many mistakes as they like, change their mind, choose to add, subtract or divide their numbers, and it will ALWAYS end up as YOUR number. No TOXIC set-up or memory recall!

FATE 2.0:
After releasing the first version of this effect in November 2011, it soon became Theory11's best selling wire effect. Originally it was a method to divine the Shuffled order of songs on their iPhone music library. However this has just been redeveloped into a STRONGER, MORE POWERFUL effect by making it a pure mind-reading demonstration. Multiple spectators are asked to think of a random song from a Borrowed iPhone, and with the iPhone locked and hidden away in someones pocket, you can instantly reveal each spectators selection. It's that good.

This DvD has to be one of the nicest and best looking DvDs I have ever received that is solely for the purpose of magic. I would like to point out that on the menus Fate 2.0 points to Non-Toxic and vice-versa due to an issue, it's nothing major though :)
The DvD itself is very very well made, the menus are easy to navigate and Geraint teaches each effect very well

It contains some great ideas and effects I shall review each below:

Non-toxic is worth the money alone! Non-toxic allows no setup of having a set of numbers to be inserted into your phone's calculator, reset, multiplied, divided and added and it totals up as your mobile number or anything of your choice, it's simply that clean and usable!
I have yet to find a downside to this method as it is so clean and there is no funny movements and no set-up at all

Fate 2.0 is a great advancement on the Fate method, it is clean and uses a borrowed iPhone. It allows a shuffled iPod to have songs selected and you divine them with no questions or angle issues. Simply excellent, I used this twice today and both times absolutely killed, uses some great thinking and I can't see many issues with performing it

Passcode is an excellent idea with multiple ways of performing it. It's a great closer to performing these tricks as a set or to a friend who is always paranoid about their passcode for their phone :) Works with any phone that has a number passcode. this can be done with a newly set password and under test conditions if needed

Overall every effect on this DvD is easy to learn and perform and is already in my close up set. No apps are needed for any of these tricks and the phones can be borrowed if needed :)
I got it at enigma for the UK but Murphy's has it apparently and US shops should have it soon http://enigmaltd.com/product/the-eden-project-g-clarke/
I will say 9/10 overall for the full product because if I gave a 10/10 that would mean there couldn't be an improvement

Deck Reviews! / [TXT] Virtuoso launch edition playing cards
« on: April 27, 2013, 01:46:38 PM »
Hello!
I finally received my virts decks over here in the UK and after playing an extortionate customs fee for 5 decks I know have them!
So here is a review for the deck I have open and am breaking in as I write

Design:
The virts spent a lot of time teasing these decks and I must say now I have one I can see why there was a hype train! The backs look excellent doing any flourish or trick, the borders are slightly thinner so when these are fanned they all look red, it's a nice touch. The pips are very good and can be seen easily when fanned, the court cards are beautifully simple and well designed!
I'm sure everyone has seen the box, it's really awesome to have on display and looks very original. the lack of jokers is something that annoys me though, I like to collect my jokers and hopefully put them on display
Over all as usual I only by decks that I think look good but these are truly beautiful
10/0

Handling:
The other incredibly important side to a deck is handing, this deck is made for flourishers and it handles extremely well!
Fans are very slick and easy, look even and full without too much effort. for springs the stock has enough resistance to make them flow once going.
Dribbles are great because the stock is quite strong but not thick :)
Faros aren't as good as I'd hoped, I hope after they've fully broken in that they'll improve
I think that means a 9/10

Overall:
I like this deck a lot and I'm glad I got five! I would recommend getting one just for having one but as a magician this deck is excellent!
9/10

Design & Development / Designing a deck: Atomic deck
« on: January 21, 2013, 04:26:25 PM »
Hi there Aethercards :D
I have been a bit inactive lately because I have been designing this! :D
Well this is just the back design and I have some cards done but I'm looking for some constructive criticism.
I have the orange and the black and I'd like opinions on both, they are both up for consideration :')
The idea:
Basically I have a sort of love/hate relationship with physics, whereas my best friend Alex is amazing at physics, he had a formula that is at time of writing still working to accurately calculate the size of the universe to 1000 lightyears :') I wanted to design a deck and slowly was intrigued by the idea of a deck based on atoms, the back showing atomic structure and the faces taking inspiration from famous chemistry and physics related images, below is also a mock up of the ace of hearts.
I would like to know what you think of these designs,
Thank you!
-Benny

Hi there Aether cards!

Fultons Chinatown
Centurions

Thank you, I don't mind if it's just been opened once or something they will be used as well as collected :')

Deck Reviews! / [TXT] Magic Castle deck
« on: January 12, 2013, 07:18:24 PM »
Hello Aether cards!
Today I bought myself a Magic castle deck and these are my views:
as usual I only got one deck so it is open in my collection, I have broken the cards in with 3 faros, 5 springs, 2 riffle shuffles, a LePaul and 2 anacondas :')
The deck is now in prime for a review, I am holding it now so you know this is fresh :D
Looks:
The deck has a very vintage look, it looks like it came from the Vaudeville era with a very intricate image based back.
It is overall a very appealing deck, the Ace of spades is themed and the two jokers are well themed, the face cards could do with a bit of re-colouring though as the deck seems to have a mainly black theme on the custom cards! The box has the back design on both sides and looks very good :')
Overall: 9/10

Handling:
This deck handles excellently, it faros perfectly with hardly any effort! As for fans this deck fans very well indeed, springs are really good looking and flow from your hand effortlessly :') For Dribbles and such it handles very well and for cuts the cards stick together pretty well!
Overall: 9/10

I Like this deck a lot and it's design is really vintage inspired :') Definitely one to add to any collection!

Deck Reviews! / Smoke and mirrors v7 deluxe boxset review [TXT][Long]
« on: January 06, 2013, 06:09:00 AM »
Hello aether cards,
As my first review I would like to address the smoke and mirrors v7 boxset, recently released by Dan and Dave with reprints of v3 to v6 with slight variations and it contains a new deck "the v7 carbon edition"
The box that the cards are housed in is very well made, sturdy and a great display piece, it houses the modified D&D logo on either side, the same logo which as a whole is the largest change to each box of the cards.
When you open the box there is a signed certificate of authenticity which states the date they were printed, and also the individual number of your boxset.
The actual decks themselves are exquisite, albeit somewhat different from the original decks, the boxes on the front have the new D&D smoke and mirrors circle logo and the same fancy words "playing cards". The boxes are of a matte finish and depending on which deck the inside is styled to fit, the mirror deck is a reflective silver and the carbon edition has a musty black gloss interior. The backs on the boxes have no border and this creates a neat, clean look.

I will not review each deck individually for this is already a long review but I shall talk about them collectively.
Firstly the handling:
All 6 decks feature a brilliant finish and only took a minute or so to break in, I must say that that was something I rarely see. The cards don't clump after use because I've been using the Carbon edition deck for everything and they still handle like new. They fan extremely well and Faro shuffle unlike any other deck, you don't have to work at it they just weave together. For springs and dribbles the cards are fine and rigid, they work well for the anaconda.
Handling 5/5

Design:
Each of the smoke and Mirror decks have a really nice back design, although the recolouring didn't seem like much effort these really are beautiful in spreads, fans and flourishes. The v3 Smoke and the mirror deck have not had the back designs altered at all whereas the colour editions had the small circles above and below the middle removed to make for a cleaner look. The faces are pretty standard with recolouring to suit the deck and the face cards are recoloured standard ones. The ace of spades is recoloured but is the same ace in each deck, same with the jokers.
All in all the designs are extremely nice but the faces could have been the simplified ones.
Design 4/5

Performing with them:
These cards are excellent for magic. They really do handle well for all sorts of moves, double lifts, top controls, Erdnase changes and passes. I have performed nearly all my tricks but signed ones with them and they really do live up to what I expected off of Dan and Dave. Flourishing with them is the same, I covered it earlier in "handling".They have a great stock and finish to them to give them a great combination for flourishes, springs look vibrant, even charlier cuts look brilliant.
Performing quality 5/5

Overall these decks are excellent, they all have the same stock and finish, they have beautiful designs and handle perfectly. The only downside are the faces but since I marked them down on one they can only receive:
**** Four stars, nearly perfect but reprints are reprints
Thank you for reading

Introduce Yourself / Hello Aether cards
« on: January 03, 2013, 07:18:05 AM »
well Hi I guess,
I am Benny, I am a working magician living near Liverpool (UK) and I have only recently started collecting cards
I mainly use Ace fultons casino for performing because they are incredibly durable and handle like a dream!
I am aged 15 and have regular jobs for restaurants, masonic lodges and events.
My favourite types of tricks to perform by far are poker style tricks with lots of sleights , I practice 2-3 hours a night and often work in a duo
Thank you for your time
