Hey guys,
I have a little challenge for you guys The challenge is to see who can take a shuffled deck of cards and order them how they are when you buy a brand new deck.

Some materials you need:
Full deck of 52 cards
something to time yourself with

Here is the steps:

1- Grab a deck of cards

2- take the cards out of the box ;)

3- Get the deck shuffled up really good and hold it face down getting ready to start the timer

4- Once you start the timer flip over the deck and sort them into Suits Ace Through Kings for spades and Diamonds and King to Ace for Clubs and hearts (you just have to put it in the standard order new cards come in

5- when you are done stop the timer and Post your time below

I did it in 2 minutes and 5 seconds (now 1:57.3)

Now after you do that try it blindfolded with a braille deck ;)

Leaderboard

1. Good@Sabacc - 1:25.8
2. K - 1:29.5
3. Kanped - 1:36.1

I've done about 30 decks in about an hour. I've never timed myself but was reorganizing the collection a while back and reorganized all my opened decks to see which cards were missing from each. After a doing several you get pretty proficient at it.

Now see how fast you can stack a deck of cards into your stack of choice.  I bet it isn't nearly as quick.  Still takes me 7-8 minutes to put a deck in a full stack.

Just off the lead (and still under the two minute mark - yay) with - 1:51.1

But with the stack idea if I took them to the A-K mark it would only take me another 2 minutes or so to do my stack of choice which is good :)

There were a couple still in order, though.  We should maybe agree on a particular order to get fair results.

Actually despite the seemingly unfair advantage random may appear to give, it's more fair than a stack.  If it were a stack, all one would have to do would be to memorize the order of the cards in the stack, then unshuffling them simply becomes muscle memory.  Randomly shuffled is definitely the best way to go.

The current standard for adequate randomization would be seven fair riffle shuffles.  I rarely use less than that, even when just playing a casual game of solitaire.

I like how you felt it was necessary to state that they had to be 'fair' riffle shuffles.  Actually, I wonder if I could make a video of this and cheat the hell out of it...

nothing at stake, appreciative audience.  Hey, this might be a better game.  See who can do 7 riffle or, say, 12 full-deck overhand shuffles on a deck and return them to original order the fastest but with cheating allowed... except you can be called out for cheating if any of the other contestants correctly points out exactly how you cheated.  Could be fun.

So turns out I can do it quicker with a much older more worn in deck with a new best time of - 1:36.4

and I would participate in that Kanped :)

Well, in the right hands, you can table riffle or shuffle a deck as much or as little as you like and end with it in order.  Overhand shuffles or Hindu shuffles are useless for randomizing - if you can't do a proper riffle, you have to "wash" the deck by spreading it all over the table, mixing it and gathering it back up as is done at poker tournaments.

Yo can Zarro shuffle or Spider Shuffle (fake riffles) as much as you like and leave them all in exactly the same order every time.  Very deceptive, very difficult and takes a bit of time to actually do.

You can also super cheat and just use a stripper deck.  Start by swing cutting an ordered deck, then do a fair riffle shuffle.  Spread the cards to show they are mixed.  Then just keep doing fair riffle shuffles using strip cuts until you've decided enough is enough, then strip cut the cards, put the correct half on top and call it a day.  I've actually used a routine similar to this in performance.

I've tried to slice off another .4 seconds to get into 2nd but to no avail at the present (Cutting my finger whilst cooking is not good for my magic :P)

Almost - you were close.  I hold the fastest time at 1:25.8, but I believe you took second place.  The leaderboard is in the first post, at the bottom.

1:48 after a couple practice tries.

Also try using 2 decks in 2 different colors and you need to make sure that you stack them back in new deck order, and both in their respective color. It was super hard for me, figured it was an added challenge for you guys who are blowing others out of the water.
