Title: Krystle Here!
Post by: Lara Krystle "Lane" on January 28, 2012, 09:20:24 AM
Hello there! I'm Krystle (lara), I'm 22 (or was it 23) years old. I'm from the Philippines but I will be based in Beijing, China (again) this Feb 17/18 onward. Truth be told I only found out about cards (magic) back in 2008 via "ex boyfriend <-- dont want to talk about it)".

Anyway I was not much of a magician because I didn't like the idea of talking while performing. I co-founded a small magic group/club and became its webmaster/manager/video editor blah blah blah and the likes. Hanging out with the group, of course, I eventually learned a few things here and there. What I really liked the most was Card Manipulation. It fascinated me, I've never seen 52 pieces of paper being handled that way. IT WAS AMAZING!!!

Anyhu, because of my fascination on this art form, it came with a want and a need to have the right ammunition. CARDS.... Lots and LOTS of CARDS ( and bragging rights that came along when you get a hold of that rare deck). So yeah. I don't have much right now because when I broke up with the "dude" I left most of mine at his place and I really dont want to get it back.

So I'm starting fresh.
Together with Kensei777 (<---- <3 <3 <3), I'm in the process of collecting cards. :)
I saw him browsing around this forums and it caught my interest so i decided to join in as well and learn from the masters.  :P

So here I am. Please be kind.  :(

I do apologise for the extremely girlish post though.

Is our male to female ratio something like 10:1? Oh well, two of our staffers are women, oddly enough.

Welcome to the boards and enjoy your stay. Let me know if you have any questions. :) We're very welcoming so don't feel like you shouldn't post because you're new.

Krystle Welcome to the boards, and I got to say that post was very appealing with the purple I liked that a lot. You also gave a description of yourself that's longer than 2-3 sentences. Well nice to meet you and enjoy the boards.

I used to manage forums back then and I was the pickiest when it came to introductions. I was like a Intro Nazi (am I allowed to say that?)

I can't wait to get to know everyone here! I'm sure all of you are a bunch of fun and crazy people. =^-^= <nyan)

I don't think people will mind. It's like the "Soup Nazi" on Seinfeld. No one, not even the majority of his Jewish viewers found it offensive. We generally aren't very strict about stuff like that :)

Yeay for purple lovers! i used to post like this. :) but it usually works well with black BGs because you can barely see the yellow color.  but yeah. Thanks every one for welcoming me. :)

Haha, the rainbow is a bit hard on the eyes but it does add a nice touch of color to the forum, and it's easy enough to highlight it for visibility so I wouldn't really mind. ;)

Your intro mentioned an interest in card manipulation... I'll assume you're refering to flourishing/cardistry/whatever people like to call it. How advanced are you at it?

Yeah I love XCM, but I have to admit i'm not that far along with the art. I decided to stop last April 2011 because of a bad breakup with a magician. on a scale of 1-10 10 being the highest light bone ho, virts, GAMBIT and VOLDEMORT . I'd honestly rate myself a 4. I do plan on having another go at it once I leave for Beijing, China. The weather conditions there are PERFECT!! Cool and Dry most of the year. Little to no sweating on cards!

A tiny bit of moisture on the fingertips can be a plus in some situations. It makes Angel easier, for example.
I'm not very advanced either, I'm a beginner actually, but we all get better with time and practice.

If it's of any help, you can easily consider cardistry and magic two different, almost unrelated things. Especially in the case of general magicians, where cards aren't a priority as much as the tricks themselves. ;)

yeah they are two different things but can be incorporated with each other. The "ex" taught me the basics and gave me "Born to Perform" But yeah that is all in the past.
in the meantime... Kensei777 <-- my current really encourages me me and its really nice. Gave me a whole bunch of videos he had bought that he no longer needs. Like Gen 1 and others which I've never gotten the time to really watch.

:)

I was in the middle of a project I so dubbed as "Cardistry Le femme" back then. So i guess I should start on it again. :)

I have Genesis V1, the explanations in it are really great and there's plenty of moves to get started. I'm working on the Carnahan fan right now, I already know some of the most basic moves but I'll be working on the rest eventually.

What a lucky guy, finding someone who's genuinely interested in cards and a good match can't be easy. ::)

I like the flower fan, and Ekatrina is amazing at teaching it, along with other flourishes.

The flower fan does look pretty cool, but I don't like that it tends to mess up the deck pretty bad because of the bend you need to spring the cards. One move that really caught my attention from Genesis is the Blanco One, by that one guy right before Dave's Carnahan. It looks very elegant. :)

and Ekat did it with her GOLD ARCANES! **gasps** but yeah its a deck wrecker easily fixed with a Les Pauls . :)

I find it hilarious how she uses Gold Arcanes even in her PURE DVD, which was produced by Theory11.

Just watch out for the air pollution - it can't be good for the cards.  Or for you!

I've been interested in getting PURE, but I've been holding off for lack of knowing the skill level of the instruction.  Would you call it beginner, intermediate or expert level?

Welcome to the forum Krystlelane, I understand why you want those rare decks, alot of us feel the same. I'm into cardistry/flourishing/xcm whatever you prefer to call it, I started off with magic after becoming fascinated by David Blaine but soon stopped due to a lack of enjoyment and more of an enjoyment for cardistry. I'm not great but it does take alot of practice, the carnahan is a lovely looking move when done well, I've been practicing that and pandora mostly and its taken me along time to get to where I am with them and I have a long way to go before I can call them perfect.

Anyway that's me rambling on, it's good to have you here.

I never really was interested in magic even when I saw David Blaine. wait... let me rephrase that. I was not interested in LEARNING how the tricks work because I wanted it to remain a pure mystery and let it boggle my head. Unfortunately when you date a magician.... well yeah... So its no longer a mystery. So its kinda sad that i cant enjoy magic shows because even without really intending to do so, I tend to just try to reverse engineer or spot the moves and sleights that the performer uses. :(

At least with flourishing, PURE SKILL!! AMAZES me each and EVERY time!!!! Plus you don't have to talk and interact witht he audience. Because even if I am in performing arts (stage/theatre/musicals), I hate performing magic for other people in fear that I might mess up and reveal the SECRETS! hahahah!

Pandora... **sigh** I tried to learn that.. just did until the 2nd friggin sequence. (meh)

Sorry to hear about your relationship, I wont ask anymore as I'm sure you want to keep it to yourself.

In regards to magic I was always thinking I want to know how everything was done and would try my hardest to find out, that took away from the fun of it though and alot of the time I was dissapointed with whatever it was once I realised how it was done. I still enjoy watching it very much.

Like you though I'm amazed at watching a really nice flourishing video, some people are just so good at it, the buck twins started me off and even to this day I go back and watch alot of their older videos because I enjoy them so much. When doing magic I was told to go and perform for whoever was around and it felt like I was a little show monkey, I know the people meant no harm but it meant it became a bit unejoyable to me, all the interaction and patter wasn't for me and so cardistry is the route I opted for, I'm by no means great at it though and card collecting took over but I still practice when I get the chance.

See you around here

That's exactly why I love flourishing, even when you know how it's done it doesn't take away anything from it, because it's not about fooling the audience, it's all just being awesome! ;D

And I also feel the same about magic, once you know the secret it's not as fun anymore... But for some reason I'm still interested in gambling sleights, probably because they actually have a purpose rather than just being for show. ::)

Which is why I'm lucky! Sure it's a downer that I'm not the first magician she dated and that I can't surprise her much but if I do, that means I'm doing a good job!  :D

For me, even as a magician and knowing how certain tricks are performed, I have a real appreciation for the skill with which they're performed.  When I met David Blaine, I caught him doing a false shuffle once - but I'm positive he executed that same false shuffle during several of his other shuffles and I didn't quite spot them the other times; I just had a hunch.  Both he and Asi Wind were really hitting them out of the park that evening.  I didn't say anything at the time, just mentioned it to him afterwards - but also told him that I didn't say anything in the moment because I was simply enjoying the show, plain and simple.  There was so much he did that I couldn't pick up on, or didn't pick up on until after the fact, that the entire evening was still very memorable and fun.
