Title: The Gold Standard
Creator: David Regal
Publisher: self published
MSRP: $ 56
Skill Level: intermediate
DVD Run time: 27 minutes

Type of effect: Signed card appearing to a tie tack

Manufacturer's Write Up: What is The Gold Standard? It is an 18k gold-plated tie tack or lapel pin that does something special with great economy: a card is returned to the deck, and an instant later it is seen impaled on your tie tack. You can pull on the card, and spin it on the post. Best of all, when you remove the card from the tie tack, there is a hole in the card!

The card can be signed. The effect can be performed at any time in your act, with a deck in play. And it doesn't have to be a playing card. The Gold Standard can just as easily cause a signed bill to become impaled, or a business card - imagine handing out your card only to discover it pierced by your tie tack. When you remove the card, there's a hole running through it. You can then give that potential customer your business information with a permanent reminder of the effect he just witnessed.

How accurate is the ad copy? this is exactly what happens

What's in the box?  Gold standard gimmick and the DVD

Key points:  This is an elegant quality prop, custom designed from the ground up, with attention to detail. If you don’t wear a tie – this could be a gold pin on a lapel.

How are the production values: Mr. Regal is standing at a card table in front of a red curtain. He does appear to have a live camera person, but maybe not a lapel mic. His voice sounds a little echoey. At one time he says that they we are shooting in his “living room” and in fact he’s probably in a live theatre (like the Magic Castle) and the ambient noise could be an adjacent theatre.  Mr. Regal does a few “pick up” shots outside – and again, you hear ambient noise of birds and wind in the camera’s mic.

Is it well made: Looks like brass, but is made from stainless steel. Treated well, it should last you a lifetime.

Is it well taught: Mr. Regal performs this for a live audience in a parlor setting.  He goes over multiple phases and endings for the card to tie routine. Mr. Regal also gives full credit for inspiration as well as credits to previous talent who have created similar effects.

Storage? Does it "pack flat?"  Wears easily on your tie and the gimmick can easily be hidden in a finger palm.

Does it "play big?" I’d say any effect that David Regal uses in his own performance – is good enough for you and me.

Difficulty / Skill level required:  A well versed magician with an intermediate level of card skill will have no trouble with this routine.

How much arts and crafts are involved? None – everything is built for you.

How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) Absolutely, and I think this would work great for corporate and restaurant magic – where many magicians typically we a tie.

Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand.

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Magic Review: Devour by Sands Minds
« on: February 28, 2017, 08:16:14 AM »
Title: Devour
Creator: SansMinds
MSRP: $ 30
Skill Level: all
DVD Run time: 57 minutes

Type of effect:  Vanishing deck effect

Manufacturer's Write Up: One of the most important aspects of magic is establishing a connection with the spectator. Magic should be for all age groups, and we are proud to present an effect that can connect with everyone.

Devour is a fun and interactive card revelation effect that can connect with all age groups.  Imagine that the box of playing cards comes alive, and destroys all the cards in the box except for the signed card!  The selection is a completely free choice, and the presentation is 100% customizable to cater to your personal style.  Check out the trailer to see how this great effect can enable you to connect with YOUR audience.

*Gimmick supplies included
*Customize to any playing card
*Customize the design to fit your style

TV rights not included with purchase. Please contact SansMinds for inquiries regarding TV.

How accurate is the ad copy? Not every gimmick supply is included, in fact MOST are not. This is a lot of DIY.

What’s in the box?  DVD and a few of the items you’ll need to make this gimmick, you will need 4 deck boxes and an entire arts and crafts kit.

What you still need: 4 card boxes, super glue, dble sided tape, scissors, ruler, extra cards and an xacto knife. In fact of the 14 things you need to build this – they give you 4.

How are the production values? Sans Minds always makes great DVDs – everything is well mic’d and well shot.

Is it well made: This is a total DIY project.

Is it well taught:  The first 8 minutes is the brief walk-thru about how to perform the effect. The next 23 minutes is all the build of the gimmick. The DIY part is all taught through pantomime and on screen text.
Personally, I don’t know why they begin with a deconstructed box – because they just walk you through putting it back together – why? Just start with a box already put together. Nobody needs extra steps.

Also the “action” of the angry face transformation – happens slower in real time and needs some misdirection so that your audience doesn’t see what is happening.

Storage? Does it "pack flat?"  It is the size of a deck of cards, UNLESS you want an inspectable gimmick – then you need to carry an additional card case.

Does it "play big?" It gets a laugh, but it doesn’t strike me as “magic” per se. I don’t see how people can “suspend belief” that your box came to life and “ate” a deck of cards. I suppose it’s also possible to eliminate the humor part with the “angry face” and maybe use “mind power” to destroy all the cards? Or magic karate? I don’t know.

Difficulty / Skill level required:  this is very easy to do – borderline self working.

How much arts and crafts are involved? A LOT !!!

How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) Absolutely, just watch your angles (I've seen people flash on youtube)

Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand.

_____ Very Satisfied
_____ Somewhat Satisfied
_____ Neither Satisfied or Dissatisfied

My thoughts – super expensive for what comes with it and the amount of building you have to do yourself.

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Leap of Faith by Sans Minds Creative Labs
« on: February 11, 2017, 08:50:42 AM »
Title: Leap Of Faith
Publisher: Sans Minds
MSRP: $ 30
Skill Level: Intermediate
DVD Run time: 49 minutes

Type of effect:  Variation of Strange Travelers by Paul Harris

Manufacturer's Write Up:

Leap of faith creates a powerful connection between you and your spectator. SansMinds Creative Lab has modernized a classic plot and made it even more streamline and visual.

Imagine a thought of card, that only the spectator knows, visually vanishes in the performer's hand and reappears in the spectator's hand. No more complicated moves and you can quickly reset the effect.

When the effect is finished you will leave your spectator an impossible experience and a question in mind. How did you do it? This is Leap of Faith. Check out the trailer now to experience the impossible moment!

How accurate is the ad copy? This is basically the solution to ‘what would happen if the princess card trick and strange travelers had a baby?’

What's in the box?  DVD and a few needed supplies to build your gimmick.

How are the production values: Sans Minds always makes great DVDs, Jason is on the street doing the live performances – and Herman is back in the studio teaching you everything you need to know.

Is it well made: You make the gimmick, the reason it was not made for you is that it is very labor intensive. A good portion of this DVD is in gimmick constriction, be prepared to do a lot of arts and crafts.

Is it well taught: The entire first half of the DVD is gimmick construction and setup – the remainder is teaching you the routine.

Storage? Does it "pack flat?"  10 cards total including your “thick” gimmick.

Does it "play big?" If you’ve seen David Blaine perform strange travelers (un-gimmicked, I might add) then you’ve seen the reaction you can get from this effect.

Difficulty / Skill level required: You will need to build a convincing gimmick that involves, cut, paste, tape, and card splitting.

How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) As always with thick gimmicked cards, your angles are the “lines” that get created by light and shadow – be wary of them.

Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand.

_____Very Satisfied
_____ Somewhat Satisfied
__X__ Neither Satisfied or Dissatisfied
_____ Somewhat Dissatisfied
_____ Very Dissatisfied
_____ No Opinion

To be honest, I am terrible at gimmick building, glue gets everywhere and I can’t card split to save my life. At the end of the day $30 is too much for me for the amount of time and work that I still need to put into this bad boy.

How are the production values: BBM always makes great videos that are beautifully shot and contain very attractive spectators. This DVD uses the same sets we’ve seen in earlier Liam Montier releases.

Is it well taught: James is teaching the experienced card handler. He is not very patient if you’re new to the art. Plus with some of the more experienced sleights needed, I’d say this is for people who at an intermediate level.

Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand.

Most of the effects were variations on a theme – I think it’s nice to have 1 sandwich routine or 1 triumph routine in your arsenal, but I don’t need 4 or 5.

« on: February 04, 2017, 09:41:30 AM »
video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbdJO6067mQ

In conjunction with the House of Playing Cards and The Expert Playing Card Company, Vanishing inc has produced a deck that is just as perfect for magicians as it is for flourishers. They spread beautifully, they cut and faro perfectly and the minimalistic design and vibrant colour makes them stand out.

Like the Dapper Deck, the Dapper NOCs also integrate the signature paisley pattern. It features on the gorgeous, large pip Aces, as well as on the inside of the side-opening tuck box. The back design is maroon with a light black border which makes the cards look crisp and immaculate when they are spread or fanned.

As a final bonus, the backs are marked with a VERY deceptive system which allows you to know the suit of the card. It is easy to read and opens up a number of doors for incredible card tricks.

Deck Reviews! / Black Rider Back 808s by USPCC
« on: February 04, 2017, 09:38:59 AM »
video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAkAtLlU-Qs

The United States Playing Card Company began as a printing company called Russell, Morgan & Company. Russell and Morgan produced their very first deck of cards in a Cincinnati, Ohio factory back in 1881. The brand was called “Tigers” and the number assigned to these new decks was 101.

A short while later, the numbers 202 and 303 were used when the firm printed decks under the “Army” and “Navy” brands. The “Congress” brand and a few others were produced and given similar numbers in sequential order. Eventually Russell and Morgan introduced the Bicycle® playing card line and assigned it the number 808.

Over 125 years later, Bicycle® Cards became the most popular brand of playing cards in the world, and the number 808 continues to be used on the Ace and Jokers provided with each and every deck.

Bicycle Autocycle No1 -- a Target exclusive.
They come in this purple, and a green version.

Introduced in 1901 and discontinued in 1906. This deck depicts a motorized tricycle (see a detail of the fantastic machine, below). Note that a bicycle chain acts as the inner border in the design. Listed by Mrs. Robinson as having been produced in green and brown, but nobody has ever seen even a single card in either of those colors. Decks in red or blue are also extremely scarce.

In another contender for most expensive single Bicycle card, on May 21, 2016 a red Autocycle No. 1 single sold for $179 on eBay, with three bids over $150. Relatively calmer heads prevailed as another red single sold for $63 (USD) on July 2, 2016.

video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jzWYKujq7I

Printed by The United States Playing Card Company and packaged inside a custom tuck box featuring foil accents and a unique die-cut window with clear-plastic covering.

Limited edition of only 2,500 decks

Thin crushed stock - same deck thickness as the Keepers from Ellusionist

In this stunning deck designed by Michael Mateyko of KOMBOH CREATIVE, all of the traditional suits have been reimagined to create stars, swords, flies, and feathers: which are the symbols of order, aspiration, chaos, and scavenging. The imagery adorning both the cards and ominous embossed tuck call attention to medieval existentialism, the occult, and divine mathematics.

Conceived by Geraint Clarke & designed by Oban Jones. Aurelians are so intricate that Ellusionist had to employ specialists to experiment with different weights of foil and ink to create this modern artifact.

Each court card has been draped in gold and fully re-worked to stand proudly with the powerful design The faces have also been completely re-sculptured to create a timeless pip arrangement, whilst still remaining recognisable for magic Aurelians custom ace is a symbol for the "Soldier-Emperor".  The Jokers are a homage to the Tally-Ho cowboys we've all come to love.

This DVD wasn’t really wasn’t for me, I was hoping for more – but I don’t know why – the add copy tells you exactly what you are getting, in the end it’s a few oil and water routines and a couple of collector’s routines with some card productions thrown in.  Eric is a good teacher and these are good tricks – fans of these two plots will get a lot out of these I am sure.

Murphy's Magic Signature NOC Playing Cards

video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Nb6J3sM32k

The Murphy's Magic Signature NOC deck has a regal Murphy's navy blue back with a thin trim of gold.
The side load tuck box opens to a bold yet classy Chevron pattern inside as an unexpected surprise.
This pattern is replicated in the large pips of the Aces and in the Joker.

Bold, simple and elegant. Perfect for any application!

These cards have an incredible Master finish to ensure exceptional handling for magic tricks and flourishes; as well as incredible durability to withstand even the roughest night with your poker buddies.

As with all of the NOC decks the backs are marked with a VERY deceptive system which allows you to know the suit of the card. It opens up a number of doors for incredible card tricks. Each deck includes a detailed video explaining how this clever system works.
