Playing Card Plethora / Autographed White Lions Double Deal?
« on: December 22, 2011, 12:29:45 PM »
Hey guys, I've been looking at this product at the David Blaine website since the first White Lions were released:

I've been quite skeptic about buying these, since the white lions sold out in like 3 hours, but these are still available. Why people aren't buying these? I mean, they seem to be the same white lions, just without the cellophane. Is the absence of the cellophane wrap enough to make people ignore this? I've heard the white lions are some pretty amazing cards, and if you want to be able to use them and have them for your collection, this would be better that nothing. Or am I missing something?

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / What on earth do you do with double backers?
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:30:56 AM »
It seems like pretty much all of the new decks have a double backer included, and considering that when printing large numbers of cards printing an extra double backer will cost you quite a bit, I started to wonder that maybe they aren't putting it there just for the lolz.

So my question is, what is the use of double backers? Do you know any tricks that use a double backer (only the ones that only use one double backer and no other gaffs count)? Perhaps a double backer is needed for useful utility moves? Or are they putting it in there because the sheet of paper on which the cards are printed is just enough for 54 cards so that you pretty much have to put two (or more) extra cards or you would be paying for nothing? If yes, then why do they still do double backers? Might have come up with something more useful and creative in all these years.

I am making a website that teaches magic for beginners. The aim of the website is not to reveal tricks for laymen, but to help beginners get started with magic by learning some basic terms, sleights and of course tricks, perhaps even get them so interested that they would go to sites like ellusionist and theory11 and purchase tricks off of their sites thus bringing more money to the magic industry. The site would contain information about tricks with cards, coins and other little objects such as matches and rubber bands. The tricks would not be any kind of new releases, but classics by people like Dai Vernon or Larry Jennings. I will probably put a little advertising on the site just to pay for the cost of maintaining it.

But now that the site is nearing its completion, I realised that there might be a legal issue associated with this. So what I would like to know is that can you copyright a trick? Can I get into trouble by making such a website? Of course, if the creator of a trick that I've published on my website would ask me to remove it I would do so, but can there be other problems? I really need to know, because if it's illegal, then I won't waste my time on it.

Playing Card Plethora / Faro in both directions?
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:33:20 AM »
Often I hear that there are cards that faro both ways and cards that fan only one way. Card manufacturers even use it in their advertising when they say that the cards are traditionally cut which allows for faro shuffles in both directions. But I don't get it, I've tried faro shuffling my cards in all kinds of ways and they either always faro or don't faro at all. What is this "direction" in which the cards faro?
