Playing Card Plethora / Re: ‎"How to make a rose from playing cards"
« on: January 05, 2014, 01:02:47 PM »
Yeah, I've made tons of these. I make them the way Lee's was, with cards as the leaves too. Once you get the basic idea down, it's fairly easy. I had girls at school see me with a deck practicing something and ask if I could make a rose for them right then.

Shouldn't this be called V8?
Nah man, that's the loop hole. They said that V7 would be the final one but if they release a new one and still call it V7 they didn't lie. Genius!

Still haven't received my wooden case. I believe he said they'd all be out by the end of the year. Not too tore up about it though, with all the other shipping problems he's been having.

Going off the title of this thread, is he selling any other Limited Edition decks that look sketchy?

55
Dang it Don, you beat me to it. I thought the exact same thing when I first saw it. The weird part is, wasn't there a contest to choose the name for the deck when they only had sketches?

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Dan and Dave have a little teaser/promo thing saying that something was coming out on Christmas Day? I don't recall seeing anything.

They left teasers, but I don't think they had dates on them.  I was assuming it would be New Year's Day, since they've had NYD releases in the past.

Posted on their Instagram back in November.

Since we're on the topic of  USPCC's different brands, how many do they still print today? Just Bee and Bicycle? It's a real shame these sort of decks aren't made anymore, because I think a Sportsman's deck would be sweet to have just for regular use. I love the theme so much. Granted, I grew up looking up to hunters and fishermen.

By Diamond edition you are referring to the white one that was just up for sale, correct? The handmade edition? Because I have three in the post that I should be getting any day now. I'd be willing to trade one or two. Depending on what you have. You're more than welcome to PM me.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Vintage - Antique Meanings
« on: January 01, 2014, 09:55:38 PM »
This sound like a good idea.
Antique - decks at least 100 years old
Vintage - decks at least 20 years old, but less than 100 years old
Modern - decks less than 20 years old

I just have a question. Would it make no sense at all to go by printing method used? Offset printing began in 1904 in USA. I don't know if cards were printed in an offset press by 1910, but I guess you people would know?

Antique - Before offset printing.
Vintage - After offset printing, Before 2004 (Black tiger).
Modern - After 2004.

Would this make sense?

I understand that sometime down the line this must change, but I believe that change is a few years away, at least for the antique category.

A fair idea but you wouldn't consider a deck made in 2002 or 2003 to be vintage would you?

HolyJJ, why so many Black Legends? Are you a performer or do you just have TONS of neighborhood poker tournaments?

Hey man!

I'm not a performer (yet!)... but I do practice a lot (sometimes 2 hours a day), and so I go through decks relatively fast!

I've spent the past 3 months trying to perfect my bottom deal so that there's no noticeable knuckle flash underneath the deck, or any finger flash on the side of the deck after the card is extracted... and I find the latest USPCC decks tend to be way too slippery, and so I often end up either not being able to extract the bottom card, or have an extra card come out for the ride!

And so despite fact that the Legends are a bordered deck, I personally find that the coating on the cards are pretty much perfect for my bottom deals -- I get the perfect balance of slip, and tackiness to extract a card cleanly.

So currently, the Legends and the Exquisite deck (which I think handles even better!) are my favourite recent releases to practice with. Other decks that I love to practice with (which are no longer produced) are the Richard Turner Gamblers and the Richard Turner Bee decks... but seeing as they difficult to find these days, I'm stocking up on Legends and Exquisites.

Once my bottom deal and diagonal palm shift become world class, I might just end up having a ton of neighbourhood poker tournaments. Lol.

Thanks for asking brother :D

Weird that you say that because I started really dedicating time everyday to my bottom deal around the same time. Odd coincidence.
Without getting too off topic here, I actually find Bicycle stock MUCH easier to do bottom deals with. Bee stock is too stiff and really hurts my fingers. I also really don't like the finish on the Legends or Exquisites. I can't get over the plastic-like feel and smell of the cards. But hey, if it works for you and gets the job done, go with it.
And those knuckle flashes are a real bitch to get rid of, but good luck!

What was their first brand and roughly how many other Sportsman decks were made?
Why do you think they chose elephants to put on the backs of a deck with a hunting theme?

I actually think that looks beautiful. Awesome tuck.

Although, it kind of annoys me that Ellusionist is making their best decks available only to Black Club members. Some of us just simply can't afford to drop 200 bucks on a membership. Then again, I guess it's fantastic for members. I'm glad that Ellusionist caters to their membership holders, unlike some other companies. *cough*D&D*cough*

If any Black Club member picks up multiples, I'd gladly drop some cash for one.

I was in the same boat as you. I thought it was a little bit pricey but on Cyber Monday it was only 110 dollars and they gave me the 5% Black Club discount on the already discounted products.

My question is, since I just joined last month, will the deck be available to me?

Wow runt, nice collection! Are those Blue Ribbon decks in the second picture? I've seen those around before, care to share som history on them? Is there just four of them?

The Lumberjacks deck is one of my favorites. Fully custom and awesome artwork. I don't know why it didn't get more attention. Looking forward to see what you have in store for version 2!

Those are awesome! Do we have any idea on how many of these decks are printed? I particularly like the one with clocks.

I think of it like this:
To elaborate on jmrock's example, let's say he saw the Santa Back set for a hundred bucks, thought it was too pricey and then never saw another on the market. I'm willing to pay a little extra for my decks on the off chance I won't see another one like them. Because there would be nothing worse than not buying because I think it costs too much and then never given the chance again. Does that make sense?

69
The deck really wouldn't be that bad, but those court cards! It's like they sat down and said "what is the absolute worst way we can design these courts to fit our deck?"
The back design and cut in the tuck box is kind of neat. Even though I'm. Not sure what the cut out shape is supposed to be.

70
All I see is a design that looks like it was made as the poor man's version of Federal 52.  I'd need to see more to get anywhere near motivated to get this deck.

I hate it for the designer, because I bet there are many who think the same. Even if the design was done prior to Fed52, Jackson has set the bar so high now that anything similar is going to fight for it's own spotlight.

Is it just me, or does the tuckbox appear to be aged and worn?

That could be because it's just a mock-up. He could be using a weird paper that makes nasty creases like you see on the flap.

71
If it's not on Kickstarter,  I wonder if we'll have a chance to pre-order the decks.

Actually, it was on Kickstarter.  I know he has some leftover decks and they're available on his website, from both Part 1 and Part 2 of the series.

Don, I'm confused on what you're saying here. I think Sher was wondering whether or not this Army Deck will be on Kickstarter or sold exclusively on Jackson's website. And then it sounded like you were referring to his past projects.
I'm open to being corrected, I'm just confused. I don't want to miss out on any new info and you seem to always have the scoop.

72
Well thanks for the quick answers guys! I, as well as others, appreciate it!

73
To jmrock, do they still print Steamboat decks? I know the Bucks released reprints last year or so but when was the last time a Steamboat deck was printed? I've only ever seen vintage ones.

To Jackson, that is a killer deck! But I thought Congress only made one way back designs? And what does the writing on the box say? Someone's name perhaps?
The box is the coolest part. Are there any other decks with wooden boxes like that?

To Tom (that is who operates the 52+Joker account, right?), can you give a little more information on Dougherty decks? Was it a brand by the USPCC like Steamboat and Congress? Or it's own separate entity? The different companies within companies that joined together is rather confusing to me.
Also, is that eagle image the ace of spades? Is it a close up because I don't see any indices?

Sorry for all of the questions, but like I've said many times, I just want to learn more. And anyone is free to answer, I was just addressing each person's deck so this post would be a little easier to understand.

I'm really excited for this. I love vintage decks even though I can't buy many of them. I love learning about the decks, particularly ones that came out when the printing companies first popped up, and about how the cards tie into history.

I'm also on board for seeing your guys' collections. I've been curious about yours a long time jmrock!
