Playing Card Plethora / Playing Card Books

I'm putting together a new section on my website called The Bookshelf (tentative name), where recommended playing card books are showcased (and maybe also reviewed).

What are some of your favorite playing card books? I'd like to keep most of the books on The Bookshelf about the core subject of playing cards (history, art, design, etc), but I don't mind having books about card games, card magic and other sub-topics.

I have copies of A Short History of Playing Cards by Gurney Benham and Playing Cards: History of the Pack and Explanation of Its Many Secrets by Gurney Benham which I bought on eBay; both books are quite old, I'm not actually sure of their publication dates but they seem to be from around the 1930s. So I'll add these to The Bookshelf because they are quite interesting.

And of course The Hochman Encyclopedia of American Playing Cards Paperback by Tom Dawson will be on The Bookshelf.

Also, if anybody is interested in reviewing books, let me know.

variantventures, thanks for mentioning our woodblock pack, the hand-made deck was a labour of love from over 30 years ago, however, the technique still applies today, but I'd not recommend it unless you're a playing card expert, to begin with I'd suggest exploring designs and graphics in Photoshop or Illustrator, or just with pen and paper. The woodblock pack he's referring to can be found here.

We have a couple of articles related to this subject (however, they were written a few years ago and really need to be updated!). The Making of Playing Cards and Playing Card Design and also Producing Small Editions. These articles go more into the history of the craft, but could still be of interest to your project.

Gina Hi,

I agree with Don Boyer, the original first draft concept you posted is a lot more understandable and readable. With your latest version I needed 1-2 seconds to figure out which card I was looking at; if I were playing a card game this extra cognitive and thinking wouldn't be ideal, and I'd probably not want to use this deck often.

At most for me this deck would become a novelty and not something I'd want to show off in my collection or use in games or magic tricks.

However, I am a huge typography fan, and the world can always do with one more excellent typography deck, this design has a lot of potential, but I personally think it needs one or two more rounds of revisions.
