Design & Development / Re: Partisan Playing Cards
« on: April 20, 2016, 09:19:47 PM »
Well, so far, you're asking for feedback not on a deck but on three cards, seen from a raking angle that distorts the view.  They look interesting enough, I suppose, though the monochrome design is a little flat.  Perhaps if you included more (less-distorted) images and explained a layman's version of Moral Foundations Theory it would help us understand what you're trying to achieve here.

Moral Foundations is a social psychological theory that proposes a basis for moralization in the form of discrete, innate moral senses. The theory puts forward that Care, Fairness, Liberty, Loyalty, Authority, and Sanctity are moral foundations upon which cultures and individuals base their morality. Different cultures and individuals value these foundations to varying degrees, resulting in a variety of perspectives on what constitutes the "right" way to live life, and an explanation as to why people who live "wrong" seem to get along in life well enough. Politically, liberals have a strong favoring of care, fairness, and a hint of liberty, while libertarians strongly prefer liberty and fairness at the expense of other foundations. Conservatives favor all more or less equally.

I've set up these cards so that spades represent the trio of conservative foundations, loyalty, authority, and sanctity. The remaining suits are hearts - care, diamonds - fairness, and clubs - liberty. The interpretation of the cards can be left up to the player, but each card does represent an aspect of the moral foundations. With regard to the three hearts I have completed, the king represents friendship (clasped hands) and murderous hatred (no explanation needed, really), the queen represents love (right hand) and loss (left hand, wilting rose), and the jack represents care (plague doctor) and suffering (... plague doctor).

Design & Development / Partisan Playing Cards
« on: April 18, 2016, 12:18:39 PM »
Hello there. I'm back, and better than ever.

I'm working on a new deck called "Partisan", which will be based around Moral Foundations Theory, a theory that attempts to make sense of the variety of moralizing we see within and between societies. Each suit will depict aspects of morality that can be valued more or less, but everyone can relate to.

I'd love to get any feedback you can provide.

You know the whole point of Kickstarter is to set a threshold for your project, right? Calculate out what it will cost to print and ship a minimum run, and set that as your Kickstarter goal. You aren't obliged to do anything if the goal isn't met.

Its actually a bit surprising to me that Elite would last longer with all other things equal, seeing as there is a somewhat more noticeable tooth to the embossing. Thank you for your quick reply!

Design & Development / Ink Coverage and Handling

I keep reading about ink coverage affecting card handling, but nobody really goes into depth into how it affects it, or even whether it is positive or negative. Anyone have thoughts on the subject?

I went through this thread and over the internet, and I can't figure out what distinguishes the Elite finish (Luxx) from Diamond or Classic, aside from the embossing (which I adore).

I wasn't excited about the reversed colors, but I attached it so you can see also.

I've also completed a King design that I think will work for my overall style. Monochromatic.

It is attractive, but if you want it to be used for play then the card value will need to be able to be read in a fan.

Will you be doing your own typography?

Hey Don,

Thanks so much for your feedback. Unfortunately, the two way design is there to stay. It's hard to get the flower to mirror without it looking ridiculous, and I'm pretty sure I'm already pushing the limits of detail, so resizing it so I can put in two is probably not a good idea.

If people are genuinely concerned about cheating with a two way design, wouldn't that be completely resolved by adding even one 180 degree rotation into the shuffle?

I was reading up on bordered versus borderless designs last night. The subject is a bit confusing due to people equating borderless with full bleed, but I think you've done a swell job of explaining what, exactly, the issues are. I recolored the design to allow for a white edged pseudo border.

My plan is to market to wedding planners and the like. It seems to me that collectors watch kickstarter pretty avidly on their own. I've gotten in contact with Legends, but leading with MPC with an option to upgrade isn't a bad idea, especially seeing as this is my first deck.

While I am orienting the deck towards romantic ideals, I'm trying to not make it so in-your-face that it could ONLY be used for Valentine's day or weddings. The rose is not overtly romantic, avoiding the typical view of a rose by looking down from the top, and the face cards will not be covered with hearts or blowing kisses or anything like that. The color scheme is muted, with more of a maroon feel than vibrant red. I'd like to think that these could be used for a guys' night without anyone really noticing or caring that the back of the card has a big flower on it.

But on the other hand, if you give a deck to your significant other or hand them out as favors at a wedding, there's no mistaking the romantic elements.

Thanks again. You're a veritable roving wikipedia.

Design & Development / Inseparable Playing Cards

Hey everyone. I've been working on this for a couple weeks, and I'm interested to get some feedback. At the moment what I have is a card back, but the faces are coming next.

The goal of this project is to create cards for special occasions, like weddings and anniversaries, that people would actually want to play with. Too often you see gimmicky cards with photos or hearts splashed everywhere, cards you wouldn't want to be seen with. I'm aiming for a classy, timeless feel - the kind you buy two of so you'll still have a set when they wear out.

As I said above, you'd be surprised at what you can do with a properly-gilded deck.  Even faro shuffles aren't out of the question.  But the process of doing it well is VERY time-consuming and costly.

I haven't been able to find anyone offering it as a service, at least not for playing cards. Is it something that would need to be done yourself?

I have been playing around with the idea of adding mazes to the spot cards and I have come up with something that I really like. What does everyone else think? I spotted a flaw in the club suit and I will fix that tonight after work.

That's pretty classy, but I bet you can do better. Work the a-mazing (haha... eh, I hate myself for that) pips into an actual, solvable maze. You might have the line blossom out into a pip with the maze going around it, or have the pip as a room in the maze, or make multiple paths through it.

It does seem a bit off to have pips with little tiny mazes and larger mazes on the court cards.

Sorry, I have been away from the computer for a while. We haven't made our invitations yet (kinda off to a slow start) but I like the idea of incorporating some of the design elements. Im not too attached to this design so I am open for changes. I would like to make it more manly. I will give the third color thing a go and report back!

I think it's important to remember that, while the rest of the wedding might be about the bride, the groomsmen's gifts are fundamentally about the friendship between the groom and groomsmen. Especially if you're hoping they'll use the cards.

I'm not worried about the color aspect - your deck doesn't share that issue with the original Empire decks, you have that under control.  The concern is that a millimeter or two off on the cut will leave you with a deck that is completely one-way from the back, the front and the side edges where the banner runs into the bleed.  It really will take GREAT registration.  Either that or you can gild the edges, completely obscuring the spot where the card was cut under a layer of fine metal foil.  That would be a gorgeous fix, I'd think, though the cost of the deck would rise dramatically.

Hey Don. Gilding really is beautiful, but I've always wondered how it holds up to shuffling. It seems like the foil would be prone to flaking off. You wouldn't happen to know, would you?
