Hey everyone,

Deck Finesse is giving away ten quality decks in a Facebook competition, one each weekday starting Wednesday 28th. You will have to name the deck in the picture correctly and share the post to be entered into the draw.

Due to the format of the contest I am unable to reveal the exact prizes but as with previous contests they will mainly be limited edition releases from the last few years.

With fewer than thirty entries on many days of previous contests there have already been repeat winners...come take advantage of our low profile and high odds!

Thanks for your support Nurul.

Only 22 people played on day one! With 9 more decks to play for, these odds are pretty good huh!

Don't miss today's prize everyone ... It's a real nice one and signed by the artist too!   :)

Hey, this is fascinating!

Sorry for bringing up old news but I'd like to hear more about this. I've never handled JNs and had no idea that they were embossed on one side.

Lee Asher has this video which clearly shows the extremely neat embossing on the BACK of the card.

http://www.leeasher.com/playground/articles/playing_cards_under_the_microscope.html

But what's this about a cotton roller 'painting on embossment' or something? I'm not sure what the standard embossing process is. I assumed it required a textured metal roller. I can't make sense of a fabric cotton roller unless it only textured the varnish rather than the card itself, as is usually the case. Was one side normal linen finish and one side cotton roller perhaps?

If anyone can clear up this surely it is Lee!

On the point of attempting a faithful reproduction, I imagine the main benefit of individually dip coating is to seal the edges of the cards which is achieved by Fournier for Lee Asher's 605's.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I'm not at all sure about this...I believe that USPC texture their card after varnishing (before cutting!), whereas Fournier, Cartamundi and many others varnish already textured card. Perhaps a significant contribution to the instant perfect fans of USPC produced decks?

I think that if someone was willing to pay, a one sided linen finish individually coated deck could be done. It might take the work of two manufacturers and probably cost a fortune for little benefit. It could be fun though!

It's still in development until the first unit is sold!  (Feel free to making a new topic in the Plethora.)

I noted only a few changes to the page so far, but as you said, it's a work in progress.

I like the table mounted display a lot.  But I'm an urban dweller in an expensive city.  That means I don't have the luxury of a lot of table or desk real estate to spare for a display of this type.  It stands to reason that people will generally have more room on the walls than on their desks.

Having said that, it's still a really nice-looking display.  If I had the desk space I'd consider buying it - but for now, I don't even have a desk!

Yes it's true... they are a little impractical. I can fit a solid top case on my desk but the glass top case completely dominates whatever piece of furniture it's on. I like to think that being extravagant is a part of their charm  ;)

We've sold some so I'll start again in plethora...

Well, whilst we haven't got round to fixing every last detail on the website we have made some progress. We've come to an arrangement with a retailer and are also taking pre-orders from our site via a contact form as from Monday.

Perhaps I'm now posting in the wrong place as we have finished development but as this thread already exists and because I'm sure that there must be some fellow collectors here who'd want to know!...

After two years of refinements to the original designs we are finally about to produce a limited run of these two playing card display cases. We decided to make them a perfect fit for USPC decks to please the modern collecting community that we mainly associate with and have been inspired by. We've done our very best to create something really high quality to pay respect to the quality of design and manufacture of playing cards!

But all this said, what we'd really love to get feedback on is the overall concept. How do people feel about the table-top display case vs a wall mounted display?

Don, kind of you to be so thorough. Though I did get most of these points first time round and I believe I responded to them.

It seems you are quite correct, I have had e-mails from people assuming that we are retailing and that we have forgotten to add the price and function to buy. We are now considering retailing as well and I'll come back here to confirm if we do so.

Many of the changes suggested here will be made, as I've previously said. Quite possibly the drop down descriptions included!

Thanks again!

Some of this is making more sense if you are selling directly, but hopefully you'll include links to retailers via an obvious 'buy' or 'where to buy' link.

Drop down boxes don't sell product and they are used for technical and more detailed information in addition to the key features of the product which are prominently displayed right with the product photo and information to purchase.  I don't think you have enough information in the sectioned boxes to make them essential, especially since that's the ONLY place there is any information on the product pages.

It was hard to find availability date, where to buy, what are the key features, etc.

- I understand your point about the drop down boxes and will reconsider them!

- Availability date, where to buy will be updated in due course.

- I also understand that by having a web-presence people may assume that I'm retailing but surely It would be stupid not to have social media accounts in our name?

- Don, too much like a shop? I didn't think it was a too obvious shop format but I guess I do see what you mean. Hopefully all will become clearer when we add a list of clients and 'where to buy' etc. I felt that it wouldn't hurt to have some of the details publicly available now and certainly didn't set out to waste anyone's time! :)

By the way it is perfectly common for wholesalers to have websites that are exactly what is being described- a shop format without prices and a price-list available upon request. Perhaps the confusion arises from the site looking nice rather than purely functional but imagine how bad it could look being purely functional with just two products. I couldn't bring myself to build a deliberately bad looking website!

Thanks for the feedback.

I agree that the text is a little too hard to read at the moment, on some of the background images. That the gallery needs improving and many other small details need tweaking. These things will be fixed over the next few days.

On the point of usability... we are not retailing our products and think that our potential clients can easily find the information they need (some pictures and our e-mail address). On sales...our sales will come more from making phone calls and sending e-mails than being found on-line.

Clearly the the rest is an expression of our brand, so we do want it to be beautiful. ecNate ...what information did you find difficult to discover?

What is the problem with drop down boxes for the text on product pages? I see this everywhere!

I will certainly work to make it more easily read.

Robert

Hopefully some of you will have seen the deck finesse logo somewhere on social media. We had our first product idea over two years ago but have been keeping it quiet whilst we developed our branding and business plan.

Tomorrow morning at 11:00 am UK our website will go live and we'll be revealing our first products- two designs of playing card display case. These designs have been seen by many big names in the industry and we've had great feedback. We are selling exclusively wholesale but wont be taking orders until the 22nd July, which gives me a chance to get some feedback from you, the community, before I commit to sales and production.

So please pay us a visit and let us know what you think!

The project has gone live and it sure is selling fast!

I'm rather sad to be too poor to get some original artwork but fairly pleased with bagging an uncut sheet. It all looks just wonderful.

Wow. The cigarette design references must be deliberate. The cut of the lid is functional but the addition of foil, the cut-out of that particular shape and overall design sure does make them look a lot like cigarettes.

The opening mechanism will be nice to use, quick and no messing around tucking in a flap. But smokers will confirm that cigarette packets tend to get torn along the fold line well before the box is empty. I guess the card will be a little thicker so perhaps this effect will be no worse than the corner curl on a normal deck.

Fascinating design decision. I personally like it but am a little worried about the tobacco reference.

Don't smoke!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Vintage - Antique Meanings
« on: January 02, 2014, 05:13:15 PM »
I'm failing to see the need to define it exactly. It has never been decided for furniture, jewelry or anything else.

In fact, I think that one wouldn't want to define it exactly. Whilst useful in casual conversation I'm not sure that these are useful terms for record keeping because as time passes the actual category dates move, so any reference to a deck by category without actual manufacturing date will become obsolete. If you want to publish something that refers to these categories feel free to define it yourself and if it is for the the purpose of one's own records then you are achieving very little.

If the administrators want to start an 'Antique' section of the forum perhaps they would consider a 'pre-1900's' or 'pre-1920' section instead. :)

If you have an old laser pointer or perhaps a CD/DVD player you can take the lens and make yourself a, less convenient, microscope set-up for free.

This project has been back on-line for a few weeks now and seems to be struggling.

Their updated designs are much improved and price not outrageous either. Only an extra £1 international shipping per deck.

Worth another look?

I agree with you Rob Wright and with many previously made criticisms.

Anyway, my two decks arrived today. Not bad at all!

They handle reasonably well and even faro straight out of the box. I struggle to get a perfect fan as is so easy with most USPC decks. The print quality and cut is very good. The border alignment is excellent. Well done again Ivory Graphics!

I'm enjoying the design more in the flesh. In the end I think that the pips aren't too big in that they look comfortable on the card but the size and placement of the indices makes them hard to show in a fan.

The texture of the card isn't a perfectly even matrix of dots but much rougher. You can't really feel it but you can see. I doubt it was intentional but is actually it is in keeping with the design as it looks a little like wheat!

The tuck case design is fine but not the best quality. Thick glossy and cut a little roughly, it's not as nice as the one DMC and Sovereign produced for their Great Whites.

Overall it's pretty good. I'm sure that kickstarter backers will be satisfied.

Incredible!

I had no idea these existed. Just bought one, thanks for the tip KPopFever605!

Yes I got a few.

The theme isn't particularly to my taste but I thought that his team did a fair job of the design. (I also like to keep an eye on the quality of Ivory Graphics' decks and I'm keen to encourage more people from UK and Europe to use manufacturers from their own countries)

I spoke to Ashley during the project and encouraged him to come back here to talk more. I think he felt a little like it was too late, that the forum was 'against him'. I don't think people were any harsher than normal but he is only 16 and I sometimes find you quite intimidating at 30!

On the pricing and print run- I doubt that he expected huge international sales. Here in the UK we are used to paying close to £10 for a ltd. edition deck. We are aware and very jealous that you don't in north America.

Ashley has a few more decks planned.  I'm sure that he will become more professional as he matures and I'm sure he'll find a way of  winning your trust again.

I haven't received my decks yet, I'll let you know what I think when I do!

Just got mine too...

What's with the one way front?

The number part of the indices are bolder at one end, so a pack that has been mixed end-to-end looks messy when fanned. As if you've mixed two decks!

Loving everything else!

That is a mechanism for magicians. Have the deck all arranged in one way, have someone pick a card, put it in the other way...that kind of thing. The Legends feature that as well. Subtle but useful if you are the magic type.

Yeah, fair enough.

Though I wouldn't have compromised the design for that effect. It can be achieved without slight of hand with a normal deck and I'm finding a randomly mixed deck quite uneasy on the eyes, no?
