Hi guys, I have a question I couldn't solve the last years.
For me the best decks I have handled were the old Ohio made Tally ho cards. I also tried the new ones, after they switched the faculty to Erlanger, but the quality was horrible. The stock was soft, had no crimp recovery and they were useless after short usage. I still have used Ohio decks that fan better than some new Erlanger decks. I know that they have overcome their first quality control issues, but I still can't believe that the new tally ho decks are exactly as good or better than the old ones? I didn't had a chance to get a recent tally ho deck - has somebody maybe a source where I can buy for sure a recently made tally ho deck? And I really hope that they changed the stock, because the ones I handled from Erlanger were awful. can anybody with more knowledge give me some info on the tally ho quality development and maybe some feedback on the recent ones?
thank you guys

If it's a recently made USPCC deck no matter what brand the quality is going to be the same as they are the exact same paper stock and printed with the same process.

Even Bee is the same stock that is crushed to a different level.

He's right, to the best of my knowledge.  There's pretty much the one paper, and it's offered as two stocks - somewhat thinner (Bicycle) and somewhat thicker (Bee Casino), based on how hard it's been crushed in the finishing process.  It's not even a precise thickness - each is offered as a range of thickness, and a thick Bicycle card can actually be thicker than a thin Bee card.

Thank you guys. But does that mean that a new tally ho deck is completely identical in stock and finish to a new bicycle deck? :-\

Depends.  Was it a custom order?  What did the creator order?  As far as off-the-shelf Tally Ho, you'd have to ask USPC.

There's a caveat to everything USPC does (or any company, for that matter) - throw enough money at them, they'll stand on their heads and spit wooden nickels at you.  In other words, pay them enough and they'll make whatever you want, however you want it - but by "enough" I'm talking about a lot of cash.  It also helps if you're a regular customer of the Custom Department - for example, David Blaine gets to print "color-shifted" backs on his White Lions Series A decks, but Joe Designer-Off-The-Street probably doesn't until he's made his twelfth deck...

Sorry I should have been more  specific. I meant if there is any difference between a new bicycle rider back from the shelf and a new standard tally ho deck? I the finishes and stock should be the same now?

The easy answer is yes.  But when is the easy answer ever the complete answer?

They use the same paper to make their pasteboards.  It's compressed to different amounts, stored under different humidity levels, giving a different finish - but the actual paper itself is pretty much the same, or at least as "the same" as any two rolls of paper can be, even from the same mill, especially with all the post-consumer recycled content these days.

As far as what's offered a Custom Department customer - there's two stocks, Bee Casino and Bicycle.  They come in two finishes, embossed and smooth.  The default coating is "Magic Finish," and it's the preferred coating for most custom decks these days so few ask for anything else.  But if they did want something else, the only other option is "standard."

Now, is all of this the same as what's used on their "standard," production-run decks that they make for wholesale as opposed to custom orders?  I have no idea.  Only USPC knows, and they haven't told anyone outside the company, or at least not anyone who's talking about it.

Thank you  Don,
I guess I have to handle the new ones and try them myself. Anyone has a source which sells for sure freshly printed tally ho decks? I want to buy them as fresh as it gets ;) preferably europe is fine, but as long as they are made within the last year or so, I'm also willing to buy them overseas.
thanks

  • Charm gets you quite far. Guile gets you the rest.
What about JR's Tally-Hos? Would those fit the bill in this context?
Kickstarter completely revolutionized the way I waste money.

The people who handle playing cards are always in a world of delicate fingertip technology.

Custom decks are custom - "Tally-Ho stock" as an option for them doesn't exist.  Plus they cost more.
