Avatar picture issues

I would like to upload one of my saved photos for my avatar but whenever I try to upload one it says, "Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow." So I was just wondering what is the maximum file size and if that turns out to not be the problem then what is?

I'm gonna save you some time, upload your avatar through http://imgur.com and then copy+paste the "DIRECT LINK" URL into your avatar.

I think the max file size for avatars here is 256 kb
