The hand-painted ones were only for the wealthy. I was mainly referring to the mass production ones used by the general population. The cheapest and most common ones seem to stick to the RYB scheme. I know certain dyes were cheaper than others, English soldiers wore red uniforms for 250 years for this reason.

BTW, are you still working on your Topkapi or minchiate decks? I was planning on making a Mamluk poker deck until I saw your posts and saw you were further ahead. I couldn't find any pictures on the internet of what the backs of the Topkapi cards are but I assume they were plain backs. Otherwise, I can't explain the atrocious blue pattern Cartamundi selected for their 1970's reproductions.

Don, I'm not too familiar with Tarot decks, but other than fortune telling, are there certain card games that can be played with the deck?

I play tarot... on my computer! Tarot is a very important game in the history of card games. Basically every game that uses trumps owes its existence to tarot. Tarot is not one game but many and Hungarian tarokk is often considered the pinnacle of tarot games but I may be biased. There are tournaments here is Budapest but there are more tournaments in France where French tarot is the second most popular card game.

You can download some tarot games here and here.

Rules can be found here, here, and here.

I have a question regarding the limited range of colors on many card patterns that date from the woodblock and stencil era. It seems to me that manufacturers used only black and the old primary colors of red, yellow, and blue. Was it a technical limitation or an economic one? I know some inks used to be more expensive in the past but I think German-suited cards from the same era were generally more colorful because green was required for their suit of leaves.

Here are some examples of the RYB color scheme:
Paris pattern: http://www.altacarta.com/overview/francais.html
Trentine, probably the oldest Italian pattern: http://www.mydearplayingcards.com/2006_ITALIA_HTML/027_Baraja-Trentine.php
Spanish National, ancestor to most Spanish packs: http://www.mydearplayingcards.com/2006_MARRUECOS_HTML/002_Baraja-Esp.php
Swiss c. 1830: http://www.wopc.co.uk/switzerland/hurter-1.html
... and of course the English faces we are all familiar with.

So was it money, technology, or aesthetics that limited the range of colors?

Feedback + Support / There is no board for card games!
« on: April 17, 2015, 12:32:38 PM »
For being the largest playing card forum on the internet, there is no board for card games!  ???

If you google "card games forum", you'll only find dedicated deck or collectible card games!   :o

The closest thing to a games forum is this: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/rec.games.playing-cards which sees very few serious posts but has some IPCS members posting like Depaulis, Parlett, and McCleod. The only other option is wading through the many loosely connected sections of http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamefamily/98/traditional-card-games

Sure there are forums for specific games like poker or bridge but we should have our own board for all card games including regional, historical, or obscure games and their variants where we can discuss rules and strategies. It can also be a place where we can invent our own games.

Let's put the PLAY back into PLAYing cards!  :D

My hunch is that while the deck is in the public domain, the scans the museum provide are not. Much like how any photos you take belong to you even if what you took is available to everyone else. Since the museum doesn't let anyone scan their cards without permission, they are effectively gatekeepers.

For playable cards they're too expensive but as reproductions they are still cheaper than Piatnik's.

How do museums have copyright status for centuries-old decks? Aren't they in the public domain?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply. Is it really the oldest Joker? I think it's circa 1863 but some internet sources say there's an 1857 one which is a bit too early but still within the realm of possibility.

Gemaco was also in the news over poorly designed back patterns that could easily be edge sorted.

I'm not exactly sure since it was a few months ago but maybe through the 52+J website or through google as I was researching playing cards.

Hi everybody,

I'm a US expat living in Hungary. I moved to a small town where there's nothing to do! Last November, I became obsessed with researching about playing cards for reasons unknown. Now I own some German and Spanish suited decks as well as some tarock decks. Soon, I'll add a Portuguese facsimile to my collection. It's starting to eat into my meager income but still much cheaper than collecting chess sets or mahjong tiles! I'll probably join the IPCS in a few months. I came across this forum months ago during my research, it was inevitable since this is the largest forum. Now if I can find some one to play cards with...
