Design & Development / Hounders - a Founders deck parody
« on: July 17, 2014, 10:01:19 PM »
Yep! You read it right! I too was a backer of the Founders deck and thought it was a great deck. Who out their would be interested in me revamping the art as to not completely rip it off (I really don't care if I rip it off cuz I and most of you paid for it) and actually get the deck printed?

I'm 100% serious and am personally sick and tired of looking at the designs on a computer screen and want them in my hands.

Hey guys just wanted to give you a heads up. I am selling one of only three miss printed Black Unbranded Reserve Note Decks on ebay. I'm lazy so i'm going to copy the description to explain it to you here. It will be the only one I sale because I own 1/3 & 3/3. The one for sale is 2/3. There is no reserve price set and the bidding starts at $40.00

http://www.ebay.com/itm/161193872906?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

EBAY DESCRIPTION:

What you are bidding on is something very special and very rare. You are bidding on one of only 3 miss printed Unbranded Reserve Note playing card decks. The miss print can be found on the inside of the tuck case. The United States Playing Card Company made a mistake in the first run of the Reserve Note tuck cases and failed to print the red foil on the interior of the tuck case. However they did print the Black foil that can easily been seen on the flap in the Eye of Providence symbol and also in the phrase "Live free or die" just below the eye.

This deck is not sealed or in a cellophane wrapper. How else could you prove that it is truly an error tuck case? You will receive a complete Reserve Note deck with both the black back design and also the diptych jokers of Washington crossing the Delaware River.

To serve as a certificate of authenticity you will receive a second black back design Ace of Spades that has both Jackson Robinson's signature and also a Kings Wild holographic seal that has the identification of "Private Reserve" printed on the seal and the hand written word "Error Tuck 2/3"

This will be the only one of these that I will release so take advantage of it while it lasts.

If you have any question please feel free to send me a message.

Design & Development / Playing Card Shipping & Kickstarter
« on: October 15, 2013, 09:09:23 AM »
I have had enough people email and ask me how & how much I pay and or should charge for shipping, when thinking about starting a kickstarter. I put together a few lessons and tips that I think might help those of you who may have questions about shipping.

NOTICE:

All of the following info is for educational purposes only. Shipping and related cost vary per individual and per location. Use this info only to fashion a system that works for you.

Three Golden Rules of Kickstarter Shipping (if you following these rules, your likelihood of failure because of bankruptcy goes WAY down)

1. It is as sure as the law of gravity that people are going to get angry and bitch about your shipping prices, even if it is free.

You are NEVER going to make everybody happy, so don't live in a fantasy world in which you think you will. As longs as you are following these three rules your shipping prices are fair for both you and your backer. Most individuals don't realize the the WORST thing you could do for both YOU and your BACKERS is lower your shipping rates (below actual shipping rates) just because one or a few people are absolute jerks about life in general. Doing this will not only put financial strain on you, it will also greatly increase the chances of your project become one of those projects that funds but never delivers.

2. DO NOT try to make a profit from shipping.

Shipping with the USPS is already high enough. Make sure your product doesn't suck in the first place, that way you have collateral to justify your prices.

3. Charge people what shipping cost you.

Shipping rates are different for EVERYONE. Just because a Small Flat Rate costs $X for Joe Blow in Minnesota it doesn't mean it will be the same for you. ALL postage rates fluctuate depending on how you end up paying for the postage. If your the small project creator that has a 100 or so backers, walking up to you local USPS with a wheel barrel might be the way to go. But you will be charged a higher price for shipping than someone who sits at home in the skibs and pays for postage from a service like Stamps.com. Different companies get different bulk postage rates.

Any shipping rates that you are given (even mine) should be taken as a "good starting point". You MUST figure out what shipping will cost you in what ever form you are going to ship in.

To Fulfillment Center or Not to Fulfillment Center

Deciding weather or not to use a fulfillment center or not is up to you, and it always comes back to time and money. I personally think that EVERY project creator should at least to one project all by their self, so that they go through the process and learn the ins and outs of shipping playing cards. This way if you decide to go with a fulfillment center you will be the expert on shipping playing cards not them.

For the Federal 52 Part I I fulfilled it all by myself. This was and still is currently one of the worst experiences of my life. I am so thankful I did it, but I am so thankful that I'm NOT doing it for part II.

A cost that everyone overlooks and backers thumb their noses at is Shipping and Handling. Shipping and handling is an abstract commodity that you SHOULD NOT over look.

Time / Money Lost while fulfilling.

The following example is a crystal clear reason why I will be using a fulfillment center for my part II fulfillment. Your project may be different, so you should weigh the cost using your bank account and time as the bases.

Federal 52 Raised = $149,156.00 during it's 40 day campaign period
Backerkit Period = $15,728.00 during a two week post ordering period

Total Capital Raised in a 54 day period = $164,884

I worked an estimated 200+hours during that time period doing: Design, Answering Backers, Kissing Babies and Shaking Hands, making sure my wife didn't kill me.

$164,884 / 200hrs = $824.00 per hour

(obviously this number is different with EVERY project but the equation is the same)

Hour spent fulfilling packages = 140+ (2970 orders)

During the fulfillment time I was making $0 and could have been preparing for my next project.

Money lost while fulfilling = $115,360

That above number makes it a NO Brainer for me to pay a fulfillment house, even if they charge me double, it is absolutely worth my time.

How to estimate shipping cost

Shipping for your project will roughly come out to %16 - %18 of your total pledge raised.

I raised $164,884 for the Federal 52 Part I project and spent $27,000 on postage and fulfillment.

Below I have created a simple matrix of what I paid for domestic and international shipping.

Again, these are my rates and should NOT be taken as yours.

Allowances:

- These are postage rate calculated using Stamps.com
- All International shipping rates are calculated from a Texas Zip code of 78883 shipping to France, obviously shipping to somewhere like Canada will not be the same cost but you are only allowed to enter one dollar amount for shipping on Kickstarter, so you need to find a number that works for both France and your next door neighbor.

See the attachments for Shipping table. I don't know how to create tables so I had to just attach the doc.

Hey guys / gals,

I am trying to bolster my playing card collection, and am willing to trade hand signed (or not signed) Federal 52 and or Gold Certificate (Bicycle branded or unbranded) for the following decks. Depending on the trade more than one Fed deck may be traded (EX I would trade 12 signed Fed Decks for a Jerry's Nug) I would also be willing to trade the upcoming Silver Certs and Reserve Notes if your willing to hold them for the trade until I get them from USPC. I would also be game to trade signed uncut sheets for decks or signed Uncuts for any uncuts of the below listed decks.

I would prefer trading for two of each deck so I can open one and keep one.

If you have something NOT on the list you would like to trade for some Feds let me know anyways, I'd like to see what you have.

Thanks,
Jackson

Design & Development / Old Ironsides - Kings Wild Dreadnaught Tribute
« on: September 13, 2013, 01:45:23 AM »
I've always been fascinated with the U.S.S Constitution aka Old Ironsides since childhood. I think over the course of my life I have built and not finished about three models of the ship. I also have been a huge fan of naval paintings, in particular an artist by the name of Tom Freeman.

I have also been studying the "old masters" or the classic playing card decks of history and really fallen in love with the Bicycle Wartime series and most specifically the Dreadnaught deck. This is my tribute to both the deck and the U.S.S Constitution. I think that I will produce this deck eventually but It was a very refreshing creative process.

Design & Development / Kings Wild Development Thread

Kings Wild Development Thread

This thread originally started out as a thread just for the Kings Wild Signature Series deck but I wanted to turn it more into a digital sketchbook of sorts. I will be posting all sorts of my ideas, thoughts, and other concepts I'm developing here for you guys to take a look at, enjoy.

I'm throwing the idea around of creating my own set of traditional rider backs. My thought is they would be the court cards that I use in all of the decks that I create that call for a more traditional set of court cards. As of now I'm calling it the Kings Wild Signature Series. This is a back design I've been playing with. I also would love to do this deck OFF of kickstarter and only make these Kings Wild Signature Series decks available via my website. Its also nice to start getting back to creating instead of shipping all day long. I really just need a breath of fresh air.

The design still has a hint of my love of intricate line work.

Design & Development / Photoshop: your best friend and worst enemy
« on: June 27, 2013, 10:05:45 AM »
If you are a budding designer or illustrator, I would like to have a little chat with you.

Well actually it is a very simple simple conversation.

If I could give you any advice on how to become a "better" artist it would be this. DO NOT USE PHOTOSHOP FILTERS. The absolute worst thing you can do for your professional careers as a digital artist is to use Photoshop filters. Plain and simple they are the absolute biggest crutch of bad design, bad concept and bad execution.

Everyday I receive portfolios of artist applying for open positions at the studio a work at and without fail 50 - 75% of every portfolio is just a recreation of the Photoshop filter library.

I'm sure this is a big enough topic for another conversation but I really don't believe in the word "talent" someone may pick up something a little faster than others but talent is the MOST overused concept in the field of art as LUCK is in gambling.

The only true and never-changing force in the world of art is practice.
