I never understood the appeal behind training decks.

You can just use masking tape to create blocks of cards out of a normal deck. That way, you have a better feel for the friction of the cards, texture of the edges, and weight of the packets. Plus, you an use any deck.

The appeal - if you can call it that - is that some cardists are starting to use these things not as trainers but as card substitutes when performing.  They look flashier and catch the eye, despite the fact that as "common, everyday, household objects" they don't exactly fit the bill as well as playing cards do.  I find it more amazing to take something mundane and make it flashy than to take something that's already flashy and make it flashy.

True, that.

Plus, these things can't do nearly as many things as normal cards. I highly doubt that there's any deck of these that can match the flair of a spring or a great fan.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Love Art Playing Cards designed by Si Scott

My god, those look gorgeous.
The theme's sort of cheesy, but Si Scott is one of my all-time favorite graphic designers.

Also, looks like Kete Moon is in on this too.

From what I could translate, the presale will be going through the "Excellent playing card company" (Possibly Expert Playing Card Company?) And the print run was limited to 2500.

If the court's theme is consistent, this should be a fantastic deck. Combining the faces of the old French courts with the body style of modern standards works better than I would have thought.

Design & Development / Re: Pounders - a Founders deck parody

Expect to see the parody for the Founder's deck soon on Kickstarter. Together with my wife, we're working on it now. We just need to get the final loose ends finished before we submit for KS approval.

HAHAHAHAHA! That's amazing!
One of the jokers should totally be Salbyk running away with a huge sack of money.  ;D

I can't wait for the release! I'm definitely backing it.

why, why EPCC :(

Why not?
Their decks are fantastic quality-wise, and they have better options as far as customization goes.

I can't wait to see the jokers and court cards!

Free PDF #5: A Magician Among the Spirits

This one's a bit different. Most are guides to sleight of hand and magic, but this is Houdini's account of his experiences with "psychics" and spiritual fraud.

Design & Development / Re: Pinstriping Themed Deck

I would consider rethinking the rust theme. I like the design of the stripes, but I think the even sleekness of the pinstripes clash with the rough background.

Why not have the pinstripes on the surface of a new, sleek car? You'd have a lot more room for things like box and joker customization, plus, the design would just look cleaner overall.

I think you're missing the point.  A rat rod isn't something all shiny and new off the dealership's showroom floor.  It's a beater with rust holes and a paint job that's seen too many days under harsh sun.  In essence, it's salvaged junk converted into something with a respectable engine and a decent amount of power.  Think like the Millennium Falcon - "She ain't pretty, but she can go point-five past light speed!"  "She's the fastest hunk o' junk in the galaxy!"

I probably am. I've never been a car person, but whenever I think of pinstripes, I think of things like this.

Then again, I guess I'm not the target audience.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Tally Ho + Kings Wild=

dammit sprouts

It would be cool if you put something like "first edition" or your address in that space, but i think that if you kept the patent information, it would link the deck to a standard Tally-Ho deck better. Whatever you choose, it will still be an amazing deck!

Nice across the board there MrMollusk, Gratz!

Thanks! It's been months since I directly ordered cards, so it feels awesome to be buying again!  :D

This is actually a really cool idea. I love the design, but I'm not too big on the colors. I (personally) think the deck might work better if you went with a red and blue color scheme. It's a more familiar color set for decks of cards, and would blend traditional colors with a modern design. As it is, I think it looks sort of tacky. (Then again, red and green always remind me of Christmas.)

The court cards look fantastic, but the bodies all have uniform textures. I think changing sections of them up would be great for the deck. The joker's indice is also a bit-off putting. The way the word "Joker" is squashed into a small box looks kind of strange. A simple J or a star would work just as well, and look more natural.

Definitely go with "Profile". "Profil" sounds like a typo, even though it's intentional.

Love what you have so far! I can't wait to see the Ace of Spades!

Thanks for the cool interview, Sparkz!

Even for a promo deck, I don't think the "card launcher" on the AoS really fits. Maybe if it wasn't the main focus of the ace, or if the deck's theme was completely based on the website. The problem is that it's still a gorgeous deck that stands alone without the relation to Card Launcher, so branding the most significant card of the deck with it just seems strange. The fact that the name is also absent from the box makes it even more out of place.

As for Card Launcher, I'm not very confident in it's success. King's Wild Funded and Deckstarter were both formed by designers with HUGE reputations. After just 2 decks (Amazing decks, but still only 2) I'm not sure that he has a big enough following to get the website off the ground. The deck certainly is good bait, but I have no clue if it will be enough.

Hopefully this will also be available for resale eventually. I love the design.

I believe they have other decks and designers lined up for funding.

That would certainly help the launch.

Any idea who's on board?

Some recent purchases. The Whispering Imps and Independence decks are absolutely GORGEOUS.

+1 to Angel_magic. Super speedy shipping, awesome prices, and the transaction was smooth as ever!

Let me know if you still need any boxes on top of the ones from Jackson. Probably isn't a big difference, but there is a difference in cost with international shipping so you're better off with his at least for starters.  :)

Ah. Good point. I'll probably be good after 20, too.

Thanks anyway!

44
I imagine i can put together 20 white brick boxes for you. I don't need any payment for the boxes just cover the cost of the box and shipping and we will be fine. Just shoot me a PM if you are still interested.

J

Thank you! That would be great!

Just sent you a PM!

Design & Development / Re: The Ritual - Design Revision
« on: July 24, 2014, 01:49:03 PM »
Everyone already covered most of the design aspects that need to be changed. The dirty look, the pips, and the back.

I do like the idea of an all-female set of court cards, but they all look so similar. The queen of clubs and the queen of spades look like the same person, just tilting their head. And while the raven is cool, it might be interesting to see some other animals.

A name change might also be good. There's already a Ritual deck.

You're off to a great start, though! Keep at it!

Design & Development / Re: Pounders - a Founders deck parody
« on: July 24, 2014, 01:43:01 PM »
Still a work in progress but this is what I had in mind. I'm not a lawyer but I was thinking a parody would be more legal than an out right ripoff of the work. I'm getting close to the stretch goal where I add an extra deck to my Colonial Unrest project. This could be it! lol

It could be the Pounders deck  ;D

But I agree with your wife, Jackson. There's no point in risking your reputation over some scuzzball's scam. Even though it's a great deck, your work is FAR superior.

There are some really interesting stories here! I got a Mystery Box deck soaked on a rafting trip a few weeks ago, but I didn't think it was a big deal.

48
I have a few brick boxes left over that you can have for just the postage if you're interested. They do have writings on them though (only way I could keep track of everything) and they're in mixed condition, some are great some aren't.

That'd be awesome! Thanks!

Send me a paypal invoice for the postage whenever you want, and I'll pay it as soon as I can!

I left my Whispering Imps deck in my car after a game of poker with my friends. My brother spilled water on it when he was getting a phone charger out, and this is the result.  :(

What's the worst way you've had a deck ruined, and what's the best deck you've trashed?
