Welcome to the world of tomorrow!

I'll have to let you know. Being international it's taking a little longer for them to arrive.

In addition, I asked for an extra deck, plus a couple of each of the two previous releases. Fingers crossed, and pics if they do send a whole bunch.  :D

Possibly. I'm not sure though as he still seems to be designing the cards as he goes, so it is kinda fitting here. I don't know.

There's only one thing to do. Light incense and chant until Don appears and blesses us with his wisdom and knowledge.

Ready?  Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........  :-\

You're supposed to say 'SWOOSH!' after that, then fly off with your arms out-stretched.

Deck Reviews! / Re: Battle 44: Fathom vs Ignite
« on: September 18, 2013, 01:42:05 AM »
IMO I prefer Fathom simply because I liked the 'bubble' theme used on the cards which was quite apt for a water-themed deck. However, apart from Aces, the same theme was used for Ignite, and I don't think it's very good looking.

Or, Water-types are SUPER EFFECTIVE against Fire-types.  :P

The link doesn't work for me.

What's your eBay handle?

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Cardomancer (KS)
« on: September 17, 2013, 03:10:03 AM »
OK, so let me get this straight.

He invents a card game for RPG-style roleplay without all the maps and dice and figurines and such.

He wants it simple, requiring nothing more than a pack of playing cards.  A run-of-the-mill deck found in any drugstore.

But then he designs a special deck for the game...and uses some terrible art...and splits the indices into separate corners, making a spread hand impossible to read without holding the cards in a very awkward manner...  It sounds more like the game is an excuse for selling the cards, instead of the cards being made for the game.  But what an awful design...

The card game idea is not a bad one, and this can actually be salvaged with a much-better artist and a consultant that knows playing card design - or both in a single person.  But I get the impression that it won't be, that the creators would be unwilling to make such a radical change to what they've developed.  C'est la vie...

Anyone on here play the game? I haven't heard of it, is it relatively popular? It's going to be a pretty damn tough sell if the game has a small player base since it's basically useless to the people who normally collect decks and support playing card KS projects.

There's enough gamers around KS, from elaborate strategy games and RPGs right down to beer-and-pretzel games, that would be willing to give this game a try.  But they'd be more likely to simply use a plain deck of cards and call it a day rather than deal with this poorly laid-out mess.  A few annotations on the cards in pen, and voila - a custom deck designed for the game that costs less, works better and isn't as hideous.

Have to agree with you Don.

The art looks like a rough mesh design for a 3D game. If this were a WIP, and he was going to smooth out the design and place a proper texture over the top to give the image of a 3D character on the card, I might see some promise in the design.

But as it stands, no. As you say, he needs to get hold of a decent/better artist and go back to the drawing board.

Not a deck I would want to purchase, let alone fund the project for.

I hate to pump this topic back up with Herbert West's Re-Animator serum, but what is this about?

While surfing eBay, I just happened upon these decks of cards. I'd never heard of them, so I googled the name. All the links are links to either Merz's eBay auctions, Amazon and this topic.

If I understand correctly, Merz had a whole bunch of these cards printed my Bicycle, and now sells them at an astronomical price to unsuspecting people thinking they're getting a good deal on 'rare' decks?

As for the name, they could continue with the "measurement" theme, and call this deck Centigrade, or Fahrenheit, or whatnot.

I doubt it.  What would they use for earth and air?  Pounds?  Tons?  Kilos?  Cubic Centimeters?

They could go with 'Pascal' or 'Newton' for Earth, which would not only be using a measure used when determining how strong the material is, i.e. how many kilo-Newtons it takes to break, but also paying homage to a scientist, who I feel never get as much good publicity as they should sometimes.

As for Air, 'Bar' is a good name.

Though, the scientifically-minded may have realised that in both cases the units used as for pressure/weight, so who knows?

This is one of the single, greatest threads I have ever read.

Take one illogical troll (Sprout) and pit him against a long-standing logical thinker (Don).

Personally, I'm waiting with bated breath to see this deck get made. These are the outcomes I forsee:

1) Sprout gets all these cards from USPCC and finds that he can't get 64 cards into the tuck boxes as predicted by his conscience, who I can only assume looks like a gypsy fortune-teller using a pool ball in place of a crystal one;

2) There is going to be a point when he's attempting to hurry through the process of rearranging the cards into boxes that he'll make a series of mistake which will result in some boxes having either less than 64 cards, or doubling up on some cards in place of others, e.g. 2 Jokers of Clubs, and no Bishop of Hearts;

3) My personal favourite. He somehow manages to shoehorn 64 cards into a Bicycle deck tuck box, only to find that not only can he not close the box, but also, he now cannot remove the cards as they are wedged in too much and he can't push them back out as the bottom is sealed.

Now accepting all bets. :D

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Tinker Deck - Steampunk Playing Cards (KS)

No name printer doesn't necessarily mean bad quality.

Not at all, but you do find that unless you go through a named printer, e.g. USPCC, there is a portion of the market which will not become involved because there isn't a known level of quality.

It's very much a problem for anyone looking to release a deck, as USPCC has a 2500 deck minimum. If you don't think you'll shift that many, or the overall cost associated with having that many manufactured is too high, you've got to go with a cheaper alternative.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Whether to open decks or not
« on: September 13, 2013, 09:33:25 PM »
This is always a tough call.

In your position, I probably wouldn't open it, however if you do find a used version of the cards for a much lower price than what a sealed deck would set you back, you may want to jump at it. It will allow you (and anyone you choose to show) to see what the deck looks like, and as long as there's no major issues (e.g. damage) you'll have a chance to see what the deck is like to use.

For me, I'm currently aimed at collecting some of the more common decks, either from retailers (physical and eBay) as well as Kickstarter, and in these instances I aim to get an extra deck that I can pull apart and use to see how the cards handle.

Introduce Yourself / Novice Cardist/Deck Collector
« on: September 13, 2013, 09:31:34 AM »
Hi all,

My name is Ronyo (well, not really, but anonymity is the main purpose of the Internet).

I recently started collecting playing card decks, currently have 35 plus a Phantom and a Stripper deck.

I am glad to be able to be able to have an opportunity to chat with fellow collectors, as well as cardists who I hope will be willing to teach me a trick or two.

Also, when telling people you're a 'Deck Collector', be sure to emphasise that you are interested in playing cards instead of being employed as a bailiff.  :)

He also mentions though the secret codes would lead you to physical locations in Pennsylvania. Cool in concept but impractical for backers out of state and especially backers out of country. Kind of cool too in my opinion. I totally forgot that the Altruism deck had a secret code thing associated with them too but it had nothing to do with physical locations.

Yeah, it kinda annoys me when people include gimmicky stuff to try and increase sales. Sometimes the design suffers for it as they attempt to shoehorn the clues into the cards.
