Great design. I'll post about it on my blog.

I love how you are going against the "crowd" and are giving another crowd funding site a chance.

I wish you luck.

It's some really beautiful work, Lotrek - definitely on par with your RSVP offerings.  I'm looking forward to getting a couple of them.

EDIT: can you tell us the difference between working with JumpStartCity and working with Kickstarter?

Hi Don, thank you!

Well, the main difference (for me) is that in order to launch on kickstarter I have to be a UK or US citizen, which I am not.

However there is more, as JSC has a number of new features boosting funding, which I'm not sure I can mention now, as I think they haven't been officially announced yet.
If the people who like my work take the time and create an account there, will be a success for me. Sometimes in the ultra-fast internet world, we are hesitant to do anything that takes a bit more than a click...

Great design. I'll post about it on my blog.

I love how you are going against the "crowd" and are giving another crowd funding site a chance.

Thanks S.Carey!

Going against the crowd was in the beginning more out of need, but now I'm really excited about this.

World changes going against the crowd and doing things the "other" way. But this is how disaster comes sometimes as well! ;D

Have a look here:

http://agbeat.com/finance/jump-start-city-says-it-will-reinvent-crowdfunding/
http://www.t3.com/news/new-crowdfunding-site-creates-community-for-backers
http://technorati.com/business/finance/article/technorati-exclusive-the-jump-start-city/

The Technorati article showed a screen shot of the site - with Valor Playing Cards as a project!  That project failed TWICE at Kickstarter, despite the best advice we could offer its creator.  He insisted on doing it his way, all the way, and no one wanted it.  I can't imagine that's changed one bit...

Well, I guess this has to do with the creator's perception, not with the site's function... ;)

You don't love them or you hate them? :-D

I want the look to resemble the layout of the old Venetian books, where the pictures had thick borders. If I got right what you are referring to.

I personally hate thick borders, but I will say that if you are using them to be artistic then power to you! I'm not familiar with the art style of old Venetian books.

Back Battle! Thin borders Vs Thick borders.

Perhaps it's just my aging eyes, but the image on the left appears a bit fuzzier - though it also looks like it has more color and fine detail.  Meanwhile, the one on the right looks like a more old-school design, simpler and elegant.

But both look to my lens-wearing eyes to have borders of the same width.  The difference must be fractional to the point of effectively nonexistent.

I think I like this one better.  The elongated "V" on each side seems more, I dunno, "formal" or something - which is good for this deck.  The use of color (when in focus) also I think is better.

One suggestion - if you made the "leafwork" in the corners the same color as the gryphons, they'd stand out more against the background.  You should try it both ways and see which looks better, if you haven't already.

I like the thinner borders but make sure that they are equidistant from the tops and the sides. It looks like the tops are closer to the edges of the card right now, thought it may be an odd optical illusion.

I'd go with optical illusion as well.  Either way, it's still just in the mock-up stages - I'm sure he'll check all the details before going to press.  He's done this before and know his way around the deck-making process.  Seriously, if you haven't already, check out "Timeless" and "Bicycle Butterfly".  Pretty...  :))

Thank you Don!

Yes, of course I'll triple check everything before (and if I make it) to go to press. I'm still not 100% positive about the back, so I don't bother with these details yet. I'll be updating the project often so all final work will be public on www.JumpStartCity.com

Hi Sprouts, thank you.
Very interesting deck and idea. I've thought about playing this way on the courts, but not for this deck. ;)

Hello cardists,

"Venexiana" is on air:

https://jumpstartcity.com/events/bicycle-venexiana.

This site functions in a different way than KS, so It's worth taking a look at this video
https://jumpstartcity.com/aboutcity.php.

At this point I need the help of all of you who like this deck. You can subscribe and vote for my project to help it move to the "promotion" stage,
where I'll be having regular updates with new pictures of the cards, new rewards etc.
Even if you don't intend to back this project you can just vote for it, it's free ;)

I hope to see you there.

Thanks for your support.

L.

I like this deck but I'm unsure  why you didn't go with KS.  Needing 500 votes to promote this on JSC seems unrealistic.  As you can see, no one has made it to the next level and no one is even close.  I had 5 people sign up to go on and vote but they weren't given a password and couldn't access the site without it.  I gave you my vote.

KS isn't available in his country.  And it's only Jump Start City's first day of operation; they might take some time to attract an audience.

Lotrek - please note that I combined the two topics on this deck.  We try to keep it all under one roof, so to speak, so it's easier to find this information later without having to look over several topics.

Good luck with your launch!

I understand that this "Elevator pitch" stage seems weird. Neither I am crazy about it. On the other hand they believe that this way they'll keep crappy projects away. I don't know...
It seems the site had a problem, that's why your friends couldn't login. I too couldn't  vote. Now it's okay, tell them! ;) ;)

I don't think 500 points are unrealistic. You have 3 weeks time to collect those points and even if you collect them in two days you won't be able to move to the next stage before the end of the week.
My project has already 95 points  after one day, so I hope that I'll make it.

Thanks,
L.

I've messaged my friends to try to log back on and check out your deck.  I understand the whole 500 vote thing, but it seems that if you can get 500 people  to like  your deck, you can probably sell these without a crowd funding project.  I'm hope yours makes it big on JSC and I'd love to see how the new site will compete with KS and Indiegogo.  If for some reason it doesn't make it to the next phase have you considered working with a US based group to manage a KS promotion?

Thank you for your support!,

I've considered many options. I don't know what shall I do. I hope it won't fail, but if it does I'll certainly have to search for alternatives. I could have some person to launch the project on my behalf but I should totally trust them. I don't know if there is another way... ::)

I think the deck looks fantastic...but how do you pronounce it? Ven-ex-ee-ana?

"Venexiana" is  how "Veneziana" is written in the Veneto dialect.  ;)

So, then it rhymes with "Louisiana"?

Exactly. As well as with "Texarkana"  ;D

Oh, so like Roseanne Roseannadanna who lived in Louisiana, married a man from Texarkana and purchased a deck called Venexiana.

I'll remember it now. :)

Ok signed back into JSC- seems to be working now.  gave 5 votes to other projects so I could give a 2 point vote for Venexiana. Good luck.

Yea, that's my baby girl Josie. She had to have surgery on her ear. Can't think what they call it, but she had blood pockets on her ear. They drain it and then sew over the ear like a quilt, to keep it from happening again.

Yes, I read that on the first page. I just wasn't sure whether or not the pronunciation changed along with it.

Okay, so I remember when SNL first came on the air...but I wasn't allowed to stay up and watch it.  I did however deploy stealth recon missions to the living room to get sneak peeks at late night tv.  I miss Gilda Radner, she's a classic.

I watched the series' premiere episode at a party my mom took me to at her friend's house.  I was pretty young - pre-teen.

I'm sorry to say that I retracted my deck from JSC. This crowdfunding site has a really stupid system which either will be changed or will die, I think.
I apologize to all  people who gave their time to support it so far. I'll seek a way to have it launched on KS, or get it printed. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you.

Which Alex are we talking about? I don't know how I got dragged into this, haha. I can't help much outside of offering this forum as a marketing agent for you. Dozens of other decks got a huge jump start (no pun intended) from that.

AAAAANYWAY

I just jumped into this thread to point out that you could easily partner with someone from the US to collect funds for you. It would work kind of like this:

- The account is made by a US person you trust, it is linked to their finances.

- You gain access to the account and set up your KS how you want. You will update the project along the way as you see fit. Everything outside of managing finances is in your hands.

- Income is gained and payed out to USPCC. USPCC delivers the cards to YOUR address overseas. You fulfill rewards from overseas.Project manager takes a cut, probably like 3-5%. or USPCC ships to your project manager/fulfillment company within the US, and the project is fulfilled from the US. In this case your project manager would get a larger cut, at least 10% or more depending on how much he or she has to ship out. Try and figure out how long it will take to ship one package, and do the math. You should go for about $15/hour for the shipping/management work.

That's all I got on my end. Good luck man.

Don't forget, both you and the U.S. Project manager will have to take taxes into account as well.

Do you have any relatives in the U.S. you can trust?

I'm from Greece and this makes things more complicated, because due to the situation here, some people may think that I am a scammer!

In the US, simply get a reseller's tax certificate to avoid paying sales tax to USPCC. This saves thousands of dollars.

What's weird is that by law all online purchases must now charge tax as well in the USA. KS doesn't allow creators to charge sales tax (which would offset the silly income tax you're forced to pay on income that literally doesn't exist since it's all spent). I guess that further reinforces that KS is not a store.

How does KS require US residency, exactly? What if you set up a US based bank account + Amazon Payments account, and just hired a shipping fulfillment company to take care of that end?

This makes sense. I only need to find a trustworthy distributor, because I hate the idea of my backers not getting their rewards.

I have a friend/associate in Cyprus and she tells me all greeks are philosphical scammers.  :P  Just Kidding.  But I don't know that I've ever heard that about Greeks.  i know there's been civil unrest with the government and all, but we are talking about playing cards and artwork here, not a get rich quick scheme.

Is the restriction with KS the Amazon Payments account?  I currently transact business internationally and receive payments in Yen, Euro, Pounds, Pesos, Canadian Dollar... all through my Amazon Payment account.  Countries like Brazil tax me directly through Amazon payments on my sales through Amazon, so I know you can have and use Amazon Payments internationally.

I guess it all comes down to trust.  You have to trust a US based "Distributor" and they have to trust you.  They provide a service of listing and promoting your project and then fullfilling it.  Also, they'd be responsible to pay US Taxes on any money collected for the product sale.  You'd want to make sure your partner has a "Resale License" in the state in which they are incorporated and an EIN (Federal Tax ID) to report tax collection.  Because I'm incorporated in Pennsylvania, any sales I make to customers in the state I have to pay the state 6%, outside the state I pay nothing.  The Federal government looks at the profit earned (Sales - cost of goods sold - other taxes - qualified expenses - shipping and distribution costs...) and then tacks on their percentage.

You would have to trust that they'd send you the money collected (less fees, distribution costs and taxes).

They would have to trust that you'd use the money to produce the product and provide for shipping expenses to the distributor.

You would have to trust that they'd ship the product and do so on time.

Who has the greater risk?  IMHO - the US Based Distributor.  It's his reputation on the line, it's him who could face lawsuits if you don't fullfill your promise to produce and deliver.  Also, they'd need to be saavy enough to understand the law with regards to distribution and tax responsibility when working with international partners.

The status of the deck is that I'm on my way to get it printed either  by launching it on KS or in some other way. I had it on JumpStartCity but due to this weird voting system, the universe there has fallen asleep...

Thanks for your interest!  :)

I suspect the founders of JSC vastly overestimated the starting audience for their site, and should have had a few carefully selected projects up for funding right away instead of this voting/waiting period.  If they don't make changes soon, none of the projects will qualify.

Exactly. I think voting apart from being totally useless as an idea, requiring 500 points at a stage that few people know about the site, makes it unrealistic.

It's not the world's worst idea, but in the early stages, you need a somewhat more lax set of rules or nothing will ever get funded.  50 people rather than 500 would have been smarter, and fewer "stages" before it becomes an actual live project that's accepting pledges.

Wait so why would HOPC not do this deck? It's OBJECTIVELY better than 90% of their releases.

To me, the likeliest reason would be an overcrowded deck schedule.

It could also have to do with the fact that not one person even mentioned House of Playing Cards on this entire thread...until you did, just now.  Lotrek, do you know about HOPC already?

Yes Don, thanks. I know HOPC and I've been considering that as an option. It's the safest for now, although less profitable I guess. (Provided that they'll be interested).

I know the guys behind HOPC - I had dinner with Alex Pandrea Thursday night, in fact.

While you might make a little bit less going through them, they remove 100% of the hassle involved in running a Kickstarter project.  No shipping to deal with, no promotions, no reward tiers - just your deck on sale.

Contact Russ Kercheval over at Circle City Cards, Emmanuel Jose (creator of the Curator deck, known here as "Emmanuel") or Randy Butterfield from Midnight Card Company and ask them what their experiences were like.  They all produced decks through HOPC and let them handle all the distribution.

It's simple - HOPC vets your art.  If they like it, they offer to make it for you.  When it sells, after they recoup the expenses to make the deck, they give you a share of the profits on the deck.  You also have the option to have your deck be an unlimited edition - they'll continue reprinting it for as long as there's a demand for it, should you wish to do so.  Furthermore, you get to keep rights to all the artwork, leaving you free to create whatever merchandise based on it that you desire.  All HOPC retains is the rights to make your deck and the uncuts.  Finally, when the last of the cards are nearly gone and the demand for them appears to have eased off, either party may decide that you're finished and no more printings will be made.  I believe it's one year after the final print run is created that the deck and uncut rights revert back to you, the designer.

It's worth checking out, definitely.

Thanks for that info Don, I think I'll check. It's definitely an option for me. I'm determined to start either way because I have quite enough decks on my mind and they want to get out of there. : ;)

May I ask what did you have for dinner? :P

He had pasta, I had a burger, we both had a good conversation.  He'd just given the first of two lectures in New York as part of his lecture tour, in which he demonstrates some of his products on sale, discusses certain card sleights, etc.  It rained last night so I gave him a lift home from the lecture - we live a short distance from each other; I practically have to pass his place to get to mine.  Not that this actually matters, right?  :))
