We have been working around the clock to prepare our first deck for Kickstarter. While so much of it is still in development, we have decided to give you a sneak peak. We will have more updates as the next few weeks fly by.

Welcome aboard.  It's always nice to have a designer stop by.  :))

The design of your deck looks interesting - painterly.  It does look like the art (but not the logo) is flipped.

I notice your Jack has two different faces from top to bottom.  That's been a very common theme lately, especially among decks with a Zombie theme.  Does yours have a Zombie theme?  If so, you might consider working on that design - and waiting.  There's been a GLUT of zombie-themed decks on KS lately.  Unless yours really stood out head-and-shoulder above the rest, there's a good chance it would be lost in the shuffle.

Thanks Don,

Our pic did manage to get flipped didn't it.  We're not going with a Zombie theme but we will elaborate more on that soon.

Cool logo! The court card looks pretty sweet too.
My main suggestion would be to bide your time. There's been an influx of art decks in the past week(s). If you're not going to do a play off standard playing cards, it might be a good idea to wait a bit.
Can't wait to see more!

Where was this influx?  Because I haven't seen anything even close to this.  These look like paint on canvas - what have you seen that looks like that?

Based on the little I've seen so far, this is the impression I get in terms of the artistic quality.

A standard deck would be like a basic Staunton chess set, with plastic pieces and a cardboard play board.

Most T11 decks would be a lot like the standard, perhaps with different color schemes, a better board and a wicked-cool carrying case.

Most more-custom decks would be like modern, stylized variants - it's still the same basic shape, but perhaps with a few bells and whistles, like maybe they're made of wood or stone, or they're more modern-looking, or perhaps have bolts and/or tentacles on them, etc.

This deck, so far, looks like one of those really cool sets made of hand-carved pieces of fine, expensive wood, with more realistic detail so the king really looks like a king, seated on his throne, etc.  They're weighted and have soft felt bottoms, with a fine inlaid-wood board to match.

...and the Stranger & Stranger deck would be like this deck's chess set, if dozens of artists with different, sometimes diametrically-opposed visions of what it should look like all got together and made one piece each, or a quarter of the board, etc. - and it was all placed in an expensive, deluxe box that was at least ten times prettier than the contents!  :))

I haven't seen any decks like that on KS. But there's been a large amount of decks simply show casing one's art.

Don't get me wrong: I love fully custom decks! You just might want to wait 15 days before releasing a new one.

Wait - don't tell me you're seriously comparing "Pixel Lincoln" to an art deck?  It's not even original art - it was used in the Pixel Lincoln game, as was the art for Nothing Personal.  SurrealScapes is a totally different art form, without a a single pen, pencil or brush (not a bad thing, just not a paint thing).  The Yiddish deck is meant more for simple language instruction, with simple, comic-strip art.  Elements...  Nice pips, but I really am not a fan, and the art styles are totally different between those two decks.

An art project would be something more like the Fairy Tale art deck, the "Broken Spell" deck, the ReDraw deck, the Black Rock Collective decks and Stranger & Stranger deck from D&D.  Of all those, this would be closest to the Fairy Tale deck because it's all painted art executed by a single artist.

Pixel Lincoln was an actual game!?
I didn't know that. But I'm not saying this deck's style or art is like the others. It looks like a deck more oriented to design buffs and artists than magicians and collectors. I could be wrong, though.

I look at Pixel Lincoln and it looks to me like it would appeal to videogamers old enough to remember the 8-bit classic game style.  Or hipsters.  :))

warning this link has nudity but that would be saying this video causes muslims to go crazy and kill ppl at our embassy. by the way don't watch that video you will waste 13 mins of your life.    http://www.youtube.com/verify_controversy?next_url=/watch%3Fv%3DJsIqjg3VkrE

Hi guys,

The cards do have a story, well each suit has a story that follows the theme of the suit as the cards shift from top to bottom and vice versa. The story is too complex to depict within the cards itself so once more updates begin to follow more of the story will be released.

And yes the Le Florentin deck had a small influence on the project.

Best Regards,
Lucky Card Company, Inc.

Shall we wait for seminude women?  :)

I think this deck will be more similar to this conceptual art than to Le Florentin deck.

Hi Collector,

The deck will not feature any nude women. Sorry if that's a disappointment.

The idea the Le Florentin deck gave to mine was to have the top different from bottom, to use more realistic art and that the top and bottom told a story.

I wish I could say more at the moment. But I do not want to spoil any surprises.

Cheers,

Differing faces on playing cards is trending due to the rise of games that have a need for dual faced cards.  These games have mostly involved zombies as it is an easily understood transformation.

I a huge fan of card backs with Latin on them (Fortune Favors the Bold), I hope the story that goes with it supports the claim.  Will there be a book or something to help illustrate the story (and by illustrate I don't mean drawings on playing cards).  From the tease, I like the color and old world feel, and I do like the art on canvas type of images.  I look forward to seeing more.

any progress?  This maybe late, but your corner badges on the back need to be just as special as your center badge.  They are a bit lacking.  Your center badge looks great.  not many ppl go with a center badge. it's like 30% - 70%.

Hi sprouts1115,

I agree with you regarding the corner badges, they will be reworked and most likely the frame as well.

We have all cards A-10 fully done and many of the face cards are nearly completed, we expect to have all artwork done by the first week of June.

We have decided to hold updates until we have all the work on its final stage. But soon you should be able to see more artwork.

We are also a magic company so we have also been busy with video editing for some moves that we will sell on our site.

On a side note, we are now an officially incorporated company under the laws of California.

With best regards,
Martin S.

Hello again, I am very pleased to release our first Official teaser for our deck of cards.  Our deck can be expected to hit Kickstarter early this Summer.  The teaser reveals the center of our back design.

Best Regards,
Lucky Card Company, Inc.

Please tell me that it's the image that's blurry and not the back design!  :))

Why tease?  Just show it!

Well of course it's the image Don ;)

We will show it all in due time.  Many folks here have access to 1000+ people and we rather not leak any more than this at this time.

Best Regards,
Lucky Card Company, Inc.

is time yet to leak anymore?

Hi guys,

I know that many of you want to see more updates, and while we want to update as often as possible to avoid a lynching >:( >:( >:( sometimes we are not comfortable outputting images that are not done or up to our standards. We are working very intensely on color at the moment, and sometimes the color tests do not turn out as good as we want so is back to square one.

Anyways, for your viewing pleasure, I'm releasing an unfinished image which we are working on color, I hope you guys enjoy it and remember its a work in progress.

Kudos to the one that guesses which card this is.

No, not to the best of my knowledge.  There were accusations of such flying around over at UC, but it was denied by both parties and they don't even appear to have the same writing style...

Hi, JP, I'm Martin, the Founder, Sole Owner and CEO of Lucky Card Company, Inc. I know Robert Butler and to answer your question, no Loop Cuts and Lucky Card Company are not the same.

Second Don is right, this was a rumor that was started over at UC with no real and factual basis for its foundation.

Hey guys,

Checking in, some quick comments and updates.

Things are going really crazy as we are in the final stretch of painting/color, then we start the exciting process of checking details with the USPCC. If you have been following us on Facebook you probably have seen that we have released other cards that have not been shown in these forums as well as other news non deck related.

As far as forums go, this is the only card forum where we will be publishing news, so stay tuned :).

Had a chat with the designer today to check the schedule and we expect to have all pieces done by Tuesday the latest (hope he can stay on target and I will confirm this on Sunday).

To keep things exciting tomorrow we will be teasing 3 other cards. We have not yet decided which ones or what time we will release them. So if you're really into the deck check in often.

Don, your price is 2 dimes and a half dollar  :D, it was hard to find a 20 cent coin. Joking aside, when the project funds I'll toss a deck your way just for being a good sport.

Mr Mollusk, thanks for trying.

Best Regards,
Martin S.

I like what I'm seeing, but I do have a suggestion.  I know this deck is more about showcasing the art than about functionality, but I'd recommend making the typeface for the numbers/letters in the indices a bit thicker - they kind of get lost in all that boldness they're surrounded by.

Hi Don,

Completely agree with you. I have been asking the designer to give the numbers a "stone look", like the pips.

This might help unify the theme within the card and make the numbers thicker.

Although the designer wants to finish the court cards and then go back touch up on the details.

There are other ideas floating around that I want to discuss in the forums once we have most of the work done.

It is hard to explain in this particular case. That comment wasn’t negative. There are some things I like in this deck and there are some things I don’t like (or maybe don’t understand) in this deck.

I like the back design and I think that artworks on court cards are talented. Very subjective moment – I don’t like the someone of clubs :)

You haven’t explained the main idea of this deck (or I missed something). In case of those death-life playing cards (mentioned by me before) the contrast is obvious. In case of your cards the difference between two parts of the same card isn’t understandable. I think with my understanding of the main idea of this deck it’ll be easier for me to value this deck.

Also I think that the cards are quite aggressive. There are so many aggressions around these days. I saw a lot of playing card designs. Unfortunately a lot of modern designs are aggressive in one or another way. Actually it worries me. I don’t think that this is a good direction for the development of international culture.

p.s. IMHO

word3 - the Don's answer.

Hi Collector,

Thanks for your reply, I'll go into further detail as to why the two parts on the cards. It basically boils down to an allusion of the Yin-Yang so I wanted to show both faces of the coin on the face of the card.

Each of the suits makes a reference to what I believe are some of the core conflicting ideals, morals or values within one person. These obviously change from one person to the next based on their life experience, education, social influence, etc.

Spades are your basic good and evil, and they are represented with the idea of Angels and Demons. It appeals to our sense of right and wrong.

Hearts deal more with the concept of beauty and ugliness. These are what I believe change the most from person to person, which is why there are so many styles of art, music, movies in the world.

Clubs deal with pacifism and war. It goes with our fight of flight response. How can someone rush into danger and some just run away. It also deals with the psychological factors of the people who in war become consumed by blood-lust and transform themselves into monsters, maybe not only physically but psychologically.

Diamonds deal with kindness (charity) and greed (avarice). It goes with our intentions when we give something, are we giving freely or are we giving just to get something in return.

As humans we never tend to stay in either extreme of the ideals but flow from one side to the other throughout our lives.

Hope this helps you understand better the project, should you have any question I can elaborate further.

Best Regards,
Martin S.
