Title: Out of This World Space Age Playing Cards [KS]
Post by: Don Boyer on January 20, 2013, 01:16:09 AM
This deck could possibly be as lazy as a Merz67 deck...

"Hey, let's make some cards!  But we don't know anything about art...  Wait, we can use a bunch of NASA photos - they're all in the public domain, no copyright issues!  Then we don't need to have any artistic talent!"

Honestly, the brain storm that came up with this deck was more like a light drizzle.  Either that or they really wanted to make a deck that would sell in the Cape Canaveral gift shop!

Don't hate the player, hate the play...

Yeah, that joker might have actually come from Merz67's Bicycle Green Trace deck, and he probably stole it from the interwebs somewhere.

Yeesh....
There is absolutely no effort put into this deck. I mean, seriously. The jokers? Really?
As a side note, you'd want to choose a more flattering picture of your mother for the promotion.

SIGH

Kickatarter, oh Kickstarter, what have you created? Sometimes, giving people opportunities just isn't the right thing to do.

With $246 raised towards a goal of $6,625, and a planned end date of tomorrow, this project was "Funding Canceled" a few minutes ago.

I dunno - why don't you tell us?  :))

Now, did you actually have anything to say about THE DECK?  Y'know, the actual TOPIC?  'Cause if you only wanna rant about KS, we have a Talk Park for that...

The original KS project was "canceled by the project creator on February 21."
OUT OF THIS WORLD SPACE AGE PLAYING CARDS DECK (Canceled)
At $10 / deck, it earned only 16 backers, raising $246 of a $6,625 funding goal.

And now it has been re-released as a new KS project (fortunately, still in ALL CAPS):
SPACE DECK ~ OUT OF THIS WORLD PLAYING CARDS
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/flip-a-card/space-deck-out-of-this-world-playing-cards

The new price is $9 / deck.
The new funding goal is $5,000.

Pricing now has FIVE separate early bird levels, starting at $9 (vs the previous $10 early bird) and going up to $13 early bird.
Semi-interestingly, there are only early bird prices.  There are no "regular" prices at all.  In the old project, the regular price was $15 (although no one ever pledged it--remember, only 16 decks were ever backed).  The "early bird math" appears to be driven by "ONLY 500 DECKS AVAILABLE!" ... If you add up all the early birds ... it totals exactly 500, which ... never mind.

I don't see ANY changes to the deck itself ... just the one dollar price drop, and the new funding goal.

P.S. I can think of a bunch of KS Didn't Happens that I'd love to see brought back for a second try (Durak, Sishou). This wasn't one of them.

If we surpass our stretch goal of $25,000, every backer will receive a coffee mug with NASA image custom imprint!

They have a stretch goal - I swear I saw these at Argos for like £7 ...

EDIT: th following quote was taken from KS on the "how kickstarter works" section

Our Simple Formula
Kickstarter is a new form of commerce and patronage. In our world, the best way to inspire support is to offer people great rewards. Everyone loves limited editions, one-of-a-kinds, and fun experiences (parties, screenings, balloon rides!). Spend some time brainstorming your rewards and people will respond. No one needs another coffee mug.

LOL at the last line

Actually, they're only "sort-of" early bird prices.  Every single one of those levels lists the same exact price for obtaining extra decks - $10.  Stupid concept, really.

The guy's an idiot with math, as well.  Assuming every limited pledge was for a single deck and no one bought anything above those tiers, he'd sell 500 decks.  But allowing the purchase of extra decks throws that math out the window, not to mention tiers including more decks above those.

The deck garnered practically NO interest the first time around.  It sat for a few WEEKS, unchanged.  It's like his mom and a few friends and relatives pledged to give him moral support, but that was it.

I've heard once that KS has a rule about doing the same project twice, though it appears to be only laxly enforced.  Assuming that's true, this is one deck they should enforce it for!  (But there's probably a loophole about projects that don't make it to completion due to cancellation...)

I have nothing more to say at this point.
Did the creator of the deck not see the crushing lack of enthusiasm his first attempt got? Why would he put it back up when he failed by such a spectacular margin? And correct me if I'm wrong, but it's THE SAME DAMN DECK. He didn't change anything.
Some people...
