Clay, at the risk of responding to your question with another question, here is a mysterious Japanese movie or stage star deck with the same back. The deck is small, 1 13/16 x 2 7/8. As opposed to the Kinema deck by the Universal PCC, this one has all Japanese text.

Here is another interesting box example. It is the same as your plain edged seconds box except that this has "gold edges" stamped across the front. The fencing deck inside does indeed have gold edges.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: The Russell & Morgan Co. slipcase boxes
« on: April 14, 2020, 10:45:59 PM »
these orange ones i've seen with the progressive Euchre decks. These types of cases were used c1881 through the late 1890s, At some point the printing on the box changed from Russell, Morgan & Co. which I believe was the earliest to Russell & Morgan Co.
They would have an inner case (unmarked) that slips into the outer cases you show in the picture. These early boxes did not have pasted on cards in my experience.

Great information Toby, on some wonderful decks.
I found one of the unknown backs in a slip-cover case, not a tuckbox. Unfortunately does not anwser the question...

Dave, I'm sorry if this is repeat information, but I've suspected that this back is the one in question (hidden behind the text box overlay).

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Early Congress Box
« on: February 08, 2020, 04:30:46 PM »
I recently acquired some wonderful lacquer decks including a nice "Dragon" in black and gold that came in the box pictured below. Most of the early Congress decks I have seen either came in the R&M green slip cover cases or the pastel-colored Congress slip cover cases.
At first, I thought this deck was put in a later box and someone replace the pasted-on card. Upon closer inspection however, I noticed that this box was unusual in that there is no copyright date below the "No. 606" line.
I am curious to see if anyone else has any Congress decks in this type of box? If so, what deck/back?

Dave,
I believe that I have bits and pieces, but if you have assembled something I'd like to have it. Do I sense another weebly site coming?? (I think that would be nice.)

Here is a wonderful description of Mr. Schmidlapp's hosting of an 1897 Commercial Clubs reunion event at his home, "Kirchheim", starting on page 24.

Thanks again Toby. Those are wonderful and special decks.
I came across J. G. Schmidlapp's name during my research for the S79 article. In 1905 he would have still been President of the Union Bank and Trust Co., however his Vice President Albert B. Vorheis is the Commercial Club member pictured in the deck, as the King of Clubs.
I seem to recall seeing another deck recently with his name on the box, but can't quite place it. I"ll have to see if I can find it with a little research.

Thanks Toby, I have wondered about those cards. Is the Joker anything special or the standard Congress capital building?

Dave, I believe I recognize that first card from a Congress display frame. If memory serves, it was pasted on and the title was papered-over. I am not convinced it is actually a Congress brand card.

I've got scans of some of the lacquers you need - I'll send those soon.
