Hey Everyone,
I've been wondering about this for years. It might be a trade secret for uspcc but I just wanted an overall idea. How is the finish applied to the playing cards? Do you think they are sheet-fed and sprayed on or some kind of other method? This has nothing to do with making my patter better or anything like that. I just want to know because playing cards are a huge hobby of mine much like everyone here. I think it would be pretty interesting to know.

Thanks!!

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

There's a couple of YouTube videos that show the process.  It's applied on the cards after printing and before cutting using steel rollers.  Years ago, they used cotton or linen rollers - hence the origin of the linen finish.  The stock texture is made when the paper is created, but previously, it used to be part of the finishing process.

Related to this, is there any post (I have made a search and haven't found it) with a "complete" list about stocks and finishes available and used (in the past) by USPCC? I am completely lost on this with so many words like Air cushion, Aurora, Magic finish, UV500, and many other...

It would be cool if some expert on this could make aa glossary about this matter...

Thanks!

You can start from USPC's own YouTube account.  I know there's a video there about how cards are made.

I recommend the first post over the second - it's more up-to-date.
