Yes, I got this last year when they did this. Damn, I just put myself on a budget so I will probably pass this time. Still, I think it is a good way to get the gold arcane for those of us who do magic. E has some nice things to choose from.

Yeap, might just get some of the tally-ho black vipers seeing that they're going out soon.

I have a question. I started collecting about 8 months ago. And I noticed that recently, Ellusionist has had many sales where they gave out rare decks for lower tier levels (1 LTD, then 2 LTDs, then 1 LTD and 1 GA, then 1 LTD and 1 RA, and now 1 GA... for 75$). Do they do this every year?

I'm going to pass this time. As tempting as it is, especially since I don't any any of Ellusionist's newer custom decks like Infinity or Artifice, I'm well over my budget already. I'll just go on the hope that they do this lowering of tier level again for Gold Arcane some other time, and hopefully I'll have the budget to get it then.
Oh, Lawd!

Yes, you will see things like this happen throughout the year  at E.

People say nothing's impossible, but I do nothing everyday.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

Nothing new. I mean if they had a new deck release, or something more intriguing, I might dive into it. But just another one of their regular $75 promotion isn't going to get me.

urghhh... with all the other custom playing cards rolling out as well, i'm not sure if i want to put in $75 for a GA too.. if looking on the long term, it might be worth it.. but short term wise, as many have said... just don't have the $$$..  :(

The sales including LTD. decks were holiday exclusives only.

The most common "sale" I've seen them do is the one that's in effect now - a Gold Arcane for $75-and-up purchases.  Last year they did it a few times before the holidays.

I wouldn't count on this happening for too much longer, though.  The last word I heard from anyone over at E was that the holiday special sales of last year took a big chunk out of their existing supply of rare decks, including the now-unavailable LTD. deck which had only just released for that holiday season.  Black Ghost 1st Edition was mentioned around mid-2011 to be down to about a thousand decks on hand at E, so the number's got to be significantly lower now.  The Red Artifice was initially sold in a batch of 3,000 on release, leaving 2,000 to pass around as premiums and contest prizes - it actually became more scarce than the Gold Arcane from day one.  Speaking of Gold Arcane, they had about 4,000 mid-2011, but they give those out a LOT, so I couldn't guess what's left, but I'd say it's significantly less.

Wow... that's incredible... just kidding... It's a shame for a company that revolutionized the custom card industry they have not impressed me since... I think they were the first (correct me if I'm wrong)... I still have the very first Black Tiger Deck... I have everything they've ever made, but that was during my 'have to own every deck' phase... as far as I see this, it's just what all of the companies are doing now in this terrible economy... We have ten pieces of garbage and one gem, so if you buy a lot of the same old boring garbage, we'll give you something good with it... Not falling for this one... Actually never really did, but just sad that a company has to resort to such tactics to sell their products...

And I don't think that, even in this economy, they are having trouble selling their products! As long as they come out with some good decks every now and then!

I do not know if you are into magic but for many of us who are I think deals like this work out well. It is very easy for me to drop $75 on DVD and or gimmicks. If one was looking to purchase something like pure smoke or some other item, this is a great time to do so. I guess some people will be motivated to drop the money just to obtain the cards but last year I held off on ordering the Ultra Gaff As I knew this deal would come around. I just spent $80 dollars on a purchase at another magicktrickstore.com so I will not be doing this this time but it is a great addition if you needed something. I think E is still producing some great cards, the LTD. deck is one of the finer decks I have received, getting two during the holiday special. I am not saying your point is not valid, I am just bored lately and feel like posting.

I think your all crazy lol. The GAs go on ebay for $75-100 so the way I see is, your getting $75 worth of free decks! I kind of already had everything on the site so I ordered some gifts for my cousins and I got some extra Artifice decks for me. I also used a coupon code for 10% off and they also give you a $75 prize along with the purchase. (and you get a free blue masters when you do the 3 deck purchase)

So for $85.73 I got...
Artifice Blue 2nd E
Artifice Green 2nd E
Bicycle Masters Red
White Arcane (x2)
Black Arcane (x2)
Tally Ho Viper
Infiniti Playing Cards
UltraGaff Deck (This was $30 but I wanted another new deck and they look pretty cool even though I dont do magic)
Free Gold Arcane Deck
Free Masters Blue
Bicycle White Deck Seals (for Spending $75)

came to $85 after coupon code and shipping.

Crazy? Not when this promotions was done over and over again over the years. Most of us have gotten what we wanted with those promotions already. This $75 for a GA isn't their best.

What was their best (other than the holiday sales) then?

Well then this is a different story. Because we all know they have sales for the holidays, very interesting ones, but we were talking about how these were out of the usual and worth it for a mid-year event.

I don't think it's different. Only because it's on a "special" day, doesn't make this promotion strategy any different than the "mid-year event".

Sales are the worst for everything this time of year, so it's no surprise that they are trying a little stimulation. Good for them, the faster those Arcanes run out the better. It will make me feel like there are actually 5000 of them and not more. :P

I don't know about that.  Infinity was, well - nice.  I like it, but there are some things about it I don't like.  Artifice, to me - it rocked, hands down.  LTD. was a very cool deck release, more in line with the simpler styles people tend to be leaning towards these days.  i'm failing to see what it is you're taking about that's such "garbage".  Please, elaborate for us; I'd be curious to hear your opinion.

E wasn't really the first, but they did kick off this current wave of card customization and collecting, and in a big way.  But remember as well, cards are sort of a sideline (albeit a big sideline) to the magic business they operate.  They've come out with some very cool stuff in that territory; you'd have a hard time arguing otherwise convincingly.  There's a lot in there that isn't the "same old garbage" as you were putting it.

I like artifice 100% and my only problem with the infinity is the box is to nice for, im afraid to carry and use this deck in case the box is ruined.

I like the infinity`s but on E`s FB page the said it origionally had no white borders, I think this would have looked awesome! idk why they don`t put black backs with white fronts just because they are bad for magic, They should have at least kept the Artifice V1`s and changed the infinities, I really like the non-bordered Artifices.

@Don... These days, when I look at Ellusionist, I am underwhelmed... I believe the pros and cons of many of these decks have been discussed in the past, but I mean really, the company is trying to live off past glory, and that's okay, I just stated that I'm not one for it... I suppose if I still performed and needed to re-up on some supplies as it was mentioned, I might look differently upon the situation.  As for the LTD, I will say, I like the deck - I'm not sure if it's because of its rarity, but I think it's got a good flavor to it... I just don't care for producing a minuscule amount of the only deck people seem to care about and then force people to buy your other stock in order to get it...  They would have sold boatloads of decks, but no one would have bought their overstock... Just not cool to me... They set a tone in the industry where others follow and it just makes for a poor attitude... I mean look at the company as a whole, they seem to solely rely on saying something is out of stock, and then offering it only when you buy $75 more garbage, and by garbage I mean inconsequential, boring decks that really no one cares about... Sound familiar? (D&D Variety Box?)... Costs around $75 too doesn't it?  I think a deck like the Americana blows away anything coming out of that company since I don't know when... Again, just my opinion... I mean I would like to feel the way I used to about E, but give me  reason to...

You keep talking about Ellusionist like it's a playing card company. You would do well to read their about us Their mention of cards is the last paragraph in the wee blurb at the bottom. Otherwise, they are pretty much clear that they are a magic trick company. It might take you 12 or 13 decks to get to a $75 tier prize, but it doesn't take many magic tricks to get there at all. I don't know if you are just a playing card collector and don't perform magic outside of card tricks, if even that, but pure playing card collectors are rare. Most playing card collectors are magicians first and foremost, and they will spend a great deal of money on the tricks ellusionist has to offer.

I am a pure playing card collectors. I bought a lot of magic tricks from E last year just to get the free decks. I never bother to learn how to perform the tricks though, just to watch and understand how they work.

@linguist... I don't understand your gripe... Don asked me to elaborate and I did... Am I not entitled to my opinion... Although I don't practice professionally anymore, I would say once a magician, always a magician... As far as my comments, they are from a card collectors point of view, and not a practicing magicians point of view, which I believe I also addressed if you read the response... Anyhow, as I said, I would like to feel the way I used to about E.  I would also like the opportunity to buy a deck like the LTD without having to spend a fortune on other things to get it, or have to resort to eBay...

In addition, I didn't want to bring it up, but since  you're pressing me, I have it from an extremely reliable source that more than one company has employees that sell their "rare" decks on eBay to earn additional income as a bonus or a perk if you will, which to me is pretty $#!TTY... You refuse to sell the decks on your website because they can only be obtained through contests and such, but have no problems selling them for $50 - $100 per deck on eBay and then want to talk about credibility?

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

  • Facebook:
Is it really that odd?  No.  Any company that sells a product will often give some of that products to at least some if not all of their employees.  Most of these card companies are really much smaller operations than they appear to be from the outside, so you're only talking about a handful of people.  In hard economic times like this, some people will choose to sell items of worth to make the budget closer to balanced, and there's no arguing that the decks in question aren't of worth.  It's not the company that's making that sale, it's an individual employee in need of cash.  If they choose to sell a gift that was given to them by their employer, they're free to do so.  E doesn't make a single buck on any of those eBay sales so you can't lay the blame at their feet.

You're staring at E strictly from a card collector's point of view.  That's fine.  But their primary mission is to be a magic company first and foremost, and a playing card company second.  They make decisions based on the opinions of experienced magicians, not card collectors.  Assuming the story about the Infinity being planned first to have black borders on the back is true, it doesn't surprise me that they switched, especially after what happened with the release of Artifice v1.  You can complain about it all you want as a collector, but it won't make E become primarily a card company with magic taking the back seat.

As far as the premiums, well - again, magic company first.  In fact, company out to make a profit first.  It's an old, tried and true tactic for a company to offer premiums for purchases of certain items or certain amounts.  Any kid who gets a prize in a cereal box knows this - your parents buy the cereal, you get the prize, period.  There's nothing wrong with the integrity of a company based on the fact that they're using prizes to drum up sales.  As a collector, this may peeve you, but again - magic (and sales) first.

If you're that dissatisfied with how E does business, there's nothing stopping you from going out there and making a company of your own, producing the decks you like and want to see made.  There's no shortage of people chasing that dream and making it a reality.  But once you're doing that - running a business, selling products, keeping the accounting books out of the red - I think you'll see E's point of view a lot more readily than you do now in terms of sales tactics.
