I just received these. Pledged for 3 decks and a hand painted art print. I received 2 decks, a print and half a tuckbox  >:(

I'm all over this, it looks great. When is it likely to launch?

204
Yep I still agree on the original back. I'm hoping my proto deck might have the first design. The new one looks slightly forced with the feathers around the edge, but still great overall.

probably best to resolve this with a rap battle

Interesting project. I've grabbed a limited 'ambassador deck' pledge but have messaged them for more info regarding it so if it's of no interest I'll let it go. Undecided on the project though - £27 for the set is expensive, especially as there is another set coming as a stretch goal.

I agree with that Don, I like the original design more. Glad I managed to grab a proto!  :D

aw man, I was going to buy a brick for that price but the postage to the UK is roughly the same cost as the cards so i'm out. I'll grab a couple off ebay later.:-(

Ended up on Kickstarter afterall

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/luxplayingcards/aves-bicycle-playing-cards-fine-art-deck-inspired

Snagged a prototype deck for this one and a couple of regulars. Nice artwork

I think i'll just buy some standard bikes to play with instead and we'll all be happier!

Good stuff. I have put a reservation down to buy my first house which just so happens to be around the corner from the biggest antique dealer within 50 miles of here. I'll be making regular visits!

212
I might go in for a mixed brick on these. Just as decks to play with as its a UK based project so i won't get my pants pulled down on the shipping for once

213
I like the improvements I've seen to this deck. I think the pips and courts are looking much better now, I just can't get on board with the card back or tuckbox so i'm still not pledging on this just yet. There's just too much good competition around at the moment.

The artwork is great though, It's just a shame the full package isn't coming together in my opinion.

This deck is superb. I love the stories and history behind cards so this is a really interesting one. The little tidbits like leaving the 5 of clubs out of the original replica is great. I've pledged for 2 of each decks at $190 incld intl shipping which is much more money than I should be spending :-(. At least it means I can open them all up and still keep a set sealed though.

I agree with pretty much everything PurpleIce says. The background on the pips is a bit strong so it's hard to see the pips (on the black suits - reds look great), the 10's look like an ace and the ace looks like a court. As far as artwork goes that's all great, as for it being a deck of cards it does somewhat hinder it's functionality. I also would rather not have the numbers circled. With some tweaking I would probably back this as I quite like the artwork, but for me it is still a little unrefined - especially with all the strong competition around.

If the project doesn't meet the kickstarter goal it may be worth re-addressing these aspects and relaunching as a more useable deck of cards. I would also expect to see a tuckbox to go along with the deck.

Another Grimaud deck, this time from 1983. each court card / ace has an illustration and accompanying story which adds up to the narrative of the life of the Montgolfier brothers and the invention of the hot air balloon. '83 was the centenary of the first flight so it is a commemorative deck.

Well after pledging for 6 decks of mana no.3 (one of each to open, one of each to remain sealed) I gave a lot of money to someone on ebay. I just need another set now so I can open up some and play with them!

Design & Development / Printing and finishing
« on: August 12, 2014, 05:42:53 AM »
Hi guys, I am looking for some advice from anyone in the know regarding the printing / finishing process of playing card manufacture.

My wife and I have an architectural studio in the UK and are expanding into product design - and hopefully are going to be producing some playing card decks as well. We have some strong concepts for the design of a limited series of decks but have a query regarding the options in printing a deck.

We are hoping to do the printing ourselves (not for cost, but rather to achieve the effect we want), using manual methods to produce a run of 500 decks - which I am aware puts us outside the remit of USPC or EPCC, however manual press printing on any more than 500 decks just isn't possible to us. Is anyone aware of a way for us to ink the decks then have the finish applied afterwards? I presume this may mean a back and forth from the factory / us which will prove prohibitively expensive. Also it would mean printing full uncut sheets which we do not have the capacity to do, we are looking at manually crafting the individual cards.

There is always the option for us to have card pre-cut and print individually, however it is again the finish that I am concerned with. Raw card will not be adequate for a deck of cards.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Tom

Personally I like the idea of the deck being inspired by divination, though to me, divination coujours images of mystery and revelation. The eye is a good start but the colours are a bit strong for me. However that's not to say a modern take on the subject matter isn't viable. Personally I don't have experience in designing playing cards (though it is something I am looking into) so I wouldn't want to comment too much - there are many more qualified than me on here to do so.

It'll be fine as long as the campaign is in their name.

I think you have to be 18 to run a kickstarter project

I love the AoS design. It makes it look a bit surreal which I really like.
