Playing Card Plethora / Anyone heard of these: One Widow Playing Cards
« on: February 21, 2012, 11:06:25 AM »
Saw this come by Twitter today, and hadn't heard of them before. Anyone else?

http://www.onewidow.com/collections/decks

My conclusions: 1. wow expensive 2. possibly the most one-wayish cards I've seen 3. "stylish" but not really usable. Seems like they've been around for a little while though, as they have multiple decks available.

Maybe I should do a crazy design and sell it for $30.

Playing Card Plethora / Dumb question about tuck case packaging
« on: January 25, 2012, 03:49:08 PM »
With as many decks of cards as I've opened, I should know this, but never paid attention when opening up a deck.

With a fresh deck of cards, if you are looking "through" the front of the tuck case would you see the back of the cards, or the faces? I think it's back, but can't visualize it.

No reason...

Playing Card Plethora / New Deck? - D&D Chinatown?
« on: January 17, 2012, 04:21:42 PM »
The creative guy at D&D put up this Instagram picture today. Looks like, uh, a chinese restaurant menu, sort of. Hmm, not sure what to make of that.

Check this out! My wife just FOUND these cards in a cabinet. I didn't even know we had them! Look how well they fan! The paper exists, and they can be held in your hand. The box is white, and the cards have ink of them! And the back art! HOLY COW, it is so totally art on the back. Like, I am SO lucky I can barely stand it.

My rating, out of 5 lumps of poo is totally a 5!

 :D

But seriously, to make this topic worthwhile, what decks would you consider to be a "must have" for a decent collection? There are so many amazing decks, but if you had to pick a handful that any respectable collector would have on the shelf, what would they be?

Playing Card Plethora / Rare or Common? Your preference in a Poll.
« on: November 30, 2011, 02:12:25 PM »
So I'm curious about people's general attitude about this, as I start to think about production numbers for my deck. It seems that "rarity" as a topic has very different attitudes amongst collectors. I see comments both for and against rarity all the time.

For example, we say:
"OMG, this deck will only have 1100 total forever! That's awesome!"
"It totally sucks that there are only 1100 of those and they are so expensive I can't ever get one"

and then we also hear:
"This deck is unlimited and I can get it anytime! Awesome!"
"That deck will never be worth anything because they are going to keep making it."

So what do you like, if you have to pick one? Would you rather a deck be limited, but perhaps cost more once the resellers get their hands on them? Or should there be abundant supply so that you get one anytime?

OK, just kidding. I've spent quite a few years doing a variety of things, and over that time I've determined that a good way to actually add a new skill to your repertoire is the following. Now, this works great for me and some folks I've trained, but maybe won't fit you as well. Still, it's worth a try.

Step 1:

This is, by far, the most important step and one that cannot be skipped. This is of core importance. It's a pretty simple one, however. Here it is: Think up a REAL project for yourself. Something you actually want or need. Don't follow tutorials. Don't just read a book. THINK of something (whether that's a drawing, a website, whatever) that you actually want to use in real life. This will give you the incentive to actually create something real, which is incredibly more valuable than running through someone else's material. Once you have this idea, then you can move on.

Step 2:

Work out the details. Write things down, make lists, organize the usage pattern, note down similar things you can take inspiration from, Google competitors, look at source code, see how other people accomplish similar tasks. Without some kind of clear plan or vision, you'll just be wandering around in the dark.

Step 3:

Assemble your tools. Maybe this is software. Maybe a camera. Maybe pen and paper. Get the tools you need. If you are young and poor, perhaps you can, um, "borrow" something for a little while. I'm sure you know where to look.

Step 4:

JUMP IN. Don't mess around with drawing circles or typing in your name. If you have a plan, you know the tasks you need to create. Google them all. "how to add a pattern overlay to a layer in photoshop"  Do this every time you get stuck. If searches don't seem to find what you are looking for, reword it. I still do this, almost everyday.

Step 5:

Keep at it until you are done. Maybe it will suck. Maybe it won't work. Maybe it looks terrible. Whatever. You learned something in the process, and numero 2 will be all the better.

Now repeat those 5 steps about 8,321 times over a span of decades and you will be awesome. Go!

Playing Card Plethora / Cardists - your best handling deck?
« on: November 14, 2011, 01:05:28 PM »
For this topic I'm not so much interested in your favorite to look at, but more about which deck works best for handling flourishes? I don't have too many decks now but can see some definite differences in how they handle and fan.

For me, I'd have to put my Artifice and Tally-Ho Viper at the top of my list. Those two seem to work great for me, consistently staying straight, cutting well and fanning smoothly. (Compare to my Sentinels, which I adore the look of but can't get to fan short of taking each card and laying it on a table one-by-one)

I'm curious what decks fellow cardists put at the top of their lists, to see if there are any great ones that I need to look for.

And here's a smiley eating a carrot  :-X

Deck Reviews! / Deck Review - Bicycle Templar Knights
« on: November 08, 2011, 03:41:00 PM »
I got my deck of Templar Knights today. Here's some thoughts and a few pics you might not have seen before.

Box:

Normal tuck case with nice illustrations on front and back. Cool detail in the illustrations, and gold colored seal. One top tab has a club and the other has a 6/9 on it. The tab does say "Congratulations on purchasing this limited edition deck."

Cards:

Nice and rich blacks on both front and back and considerably more color than you typically see in a black deck. The standout feature would be the gold pip design for all suites. They are not real metallic ink, but are designed to look like shiny metal and I think it comes off pretty well. The Ace of spades uses a different font for the 'A' while the rest use standard Bicycle, though again the pips are custom throughout. I like black cards in general and these add some different touches. The court cards are nicely colored and bright, which is also a change from most black decks that have very somber white/gray only.

Came with 4 extra cards: 2 jokers, both different, a '12' of diamonds and an interesting split 4/6 of hearts. Could be some fun for a magician.

Stock and feel:

The stock feels, looks and smells like most decks, nothing real dramatic in that regard. From a brief few minutes they seem comparable in handling to most any deck you'd pick up from USPCC

Conclusion:

I like the deck on the whole. I'd give it a 4, as it has some nice design elements, but the custom pips feel just slightly out of place with the more traditional numbering. Going full custom would have brought this up to a 5 for me.

Playing Card Plethora / New Deck - Helveticards
« on: November 07, 2011, 03:59:32 PM »
OK, I guess these aren't exactly new, and unless you are a graphic designer you probably wouldn't have run across these, but I saw them today and am going to try to get a deck. Not sure what stock or finish they use or where they were printed but they are definitely a lot more unique than most everything we see normally. Don't imagine they are USPCC quality but as a graphic designer I just can't pass them up.

Playing Card Plethora / Typical to have so many new deck coming out?
« on: October 30, 2011, 10:56:23 PM »
Hi all.  I am pretty new to all this business of getting cool decks, but in the last month that I've been paying attention it seems like there is a huge number of decks coming out all at the same time. I was wondering if, historically, there has always been this volume of cool and interesting decks all coming out constantly or if this span of time is out of the ordinary.

I'm somewhat picky, so even with tossing a lot of stuff out, just in these last few months of the year we have Vortex, monarchs, fantastique, mana, seasons, samurai, Templar, etc all hitting at once.

So either I got into this right at the correct time and it will taper off, or I'm going to be spending a lot more money than I thought and explaining all these packages to my wife. :)
