Playing Card Plethora / Re: Gorilla Deck Bicycle Playing Cards
« on: October 03, 2015, 12:26:20 AM »
I really liked this when it was originally tried. The pricing is at the top of the money chain for me. I might do 1 at that price. Have you thought of dropping the Bicycle logo, and maybe making a Gorilla logo that is similar to the Bicycle?

No date was given on when this will be released. These appear to be a darker blue than the original. Would you guys consider this a reprint?

I don't get this at all. Expensive decks for a mediocre design. Not sure what the minimum print run for this company is, but seems to have a pretty high funding goal considering. The forced story line-what does an old cardmaker have to do with sirens. Maybe if you plan on doing more than one deck it could be Old Storyteller series or something.  Easy pass for me.

This is definitely one of the better decks being funded now. While both Sawdust and Sideshow both have the "Admit One" back. Sideshow takes you down a whole different path. It has an intricate "dark" feel to it. I like the original artwork on the courts. Inspired by old sideshow posters, but not direct copies. Good stuff.

I have to agree with a lot of what Don said. There is not something that's going to appeal to the masses. You definitely what to promote this to the book crowd. You may also consider putting it under the "Publishing" category on KS as opposed to the "Games" category if you can.

tanderle, I merged your 2 topics together. It just helps keep the place tidy.

Unless you're in a country that KS does not support, then why would you want to sell your design to somebody else. If the design is good enough, then it should fund on KS without one of the resellers. If you don't want to deal with the shipping part, there are plenty of fulfillment options out there. If you do your homework, and research, and math right. Then just do it yourself. If you don't want to deal with any of that stuff, and all you want to do is draw. Then by all means sell your design. Just don't be insulted at what you are offered. JMO!

Something like this? http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-7574/Bubble-Bags/3-x-5-Bubble-Bags-Open-End?keywords=S-7574%203%20x%205%22%20Bubble%20Bags%20Open%20End

More like this:http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-10546/Bubble-Bags/3-x-3-1-2-Self-Seal-Bubble-Bags

A playing card deck is 2.5 by 3.5 inches.  This bag is just large enough to fit a single deck, factoring in the thickness of the deck, then you can fold the flap over and seal it, leaving the deck very well protected.  Individually packing the decks can be a bit more costly on the bags, but it simplifies the supply chain greatly - only need one kind of bag to protect the decks, period.

You definitely want to go with the bigger ones I posted above. The 3 x 3 1/2 are outside dimensions, and doesn't take the thickness of the deck into account. You will rip the bag trying to stuff a deck in it.

russbrett you are on the right track. The smaller box will hold one deck and the larger will hold 2. You will need a small piece of bubble rap or a bubble bag to snug the decks up. I know that KWP uses these type boxes exclusively, and for good reason. Knock on wood and cross my fingers. I have never received a damaged deck that was shipped in one of these. Just tape these boxes up and apply the postage. They work great.
As far as the bubble bag- go with a slightly bigger one like the http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-680/Bubble-Bags/4-x-5-1-2-Self-Seal-Bubble-Bags or the http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-10549/Bubble-Bags/4-x-5-Bubble-Bags-Open-End. You will want to shoot yourself, or somebody else about the third deck you try to stuff in the 3x5 bag.
You may want to also pick up some bubble mailers. I wouldn't go any smaller than these. http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-9985/Bubble-Mailers/Uline-Self-Seal-Bubble-Mailers-0-6-x-10. You can put the smaller box in one of these for international shipping. gives you plenty of roof to attach the custom's form.
You may also want to pic up a bigger box for international shipping- like a http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-433/Indestructo-Mailers/9-x-4-x-3-Indestructo-Mailers or similar. Something that will hold at least a brick plus padding.
Keep in mind ULine does charge shipping to ship your shipping supplies. I recently purchased about $300 worth of supplies, and my shipping was around $60. That's about 20% of the purchase price.

When shipping domestic, anything over 2 decks. 9 out of 10 times it's cheaper to ship USPS Priority Mail-- and not just flat rate. the regional box A1-https://store.USPS.com/store/browse/uspsProductDetailMultiSkuDropDown.jsp?categoryNavIds=shipping-supplies%3ashipping-boxes&categoryNav=false&navAction=push&navCount=0&productId=P_RRB_A1&categoryId=shipping-boxes can cost as little as a small flat rate box to ship, but typically $7-$10. The best thing about priority mail boxes is that they are free. You don't even need to go to the post office. Just order them on-line, and they will drop them on you front step for nothing-$0- zilch.

In the end shipping is probably the biggest underestimated cost of a KS project. It's nice to get that big old check from KS- just keep in mind it will take 20%+ of that check for shipping/shipping supplies. Also don't discount your time. If you work a full time job- realistically you will get 30-40 packages done per night. So if you have 500+ backers?  ??? ???  Not sure who you are using as a printer, but for example- if you print with LPCC- they will charge you to ship the decks to your US address- then you pay shipping again to you backers, and your time. If you use their fulfillment. they take care of everything(at a cost) and you get charged to ship the left over decks to you. If there is a down side to using their fulfillment- I recently received 2 decks in a bubble mailer from them- no damage luckily. I don't know if they have different levels of packaging or not.

Hopefully this helps you some-Good luck on your project

+1 for Cardfool. Got my decks in pristine condition. I also got one of the acrylic boxes. Works awesome!

The most valuable deck I own is open. In fact it doesn't have a tuck at all. It's also 130 years old. If anybody thinks that modern decks are expensive to collect. Just wait until you start collecting vintage decks.

As far as the question at hand. When we talk about the value of open vs. closed decks, usually we are talking about modern decks. In general an open deck is always going to be worth considerably less than an original like new deck. . That doesn't mean that it's not worth some money though. Example- I have an sealed unbranded black Reserve Note deck from Jackson's 2nd Fed 52 project. They are still selling for well over $100 now. I was able to pick up a 2nd signed opened one for a very reasonable price. If I was to sell it. I would take no less than $75 for it, and I would get it. Not selling it though.

It all really boils down to each individual deck. If the deck did really well when it was new, and is still expensive/rare as a sealed deck. then people will pay a small premium to get a used deck, just to say they have one. In general any deck I can buy new for under $20, I'm not going to buy used. Unless I'm buying it to have as a second.

I have to agree with what most are saying. Probably one of the best looking decks that's come out from one of the big boys recently.

Since the whole purpose of RT redesigning these cards is to get away from looking like Bee's, I would think he would not want to use the "fade-to-white" Stinger-style border?

I have to back up what Paul said about postage. I think that is one of the biggest things people underestimate. My pen KS project did $4,800. My shipping was about $500. I'll call it the 20% rule. Figure 20% postage, and 20% international backers. It's not just the postage, but you have to add packaging as well. I was about a $1 short per backer on what I thought shipping would be. Luckily I only had 90 packages to send. 1,000 or 2,000 wouldn't have been disastrous, but that's a lot of profit.

Because Justin O. has been a respected active member here for a while, I have only moved this topic instead of deleting it. I have not investigated this website, and have no knowledge to whether it is bogus or not. I think it's safe to say it is not endorsed by PCF. It is up to users to decide what websites they feel are safe.

p.s. If somebody really does win a life subscription to CC. That's pretty awesome!

Should be a great time. I've already seen one of the decks being released. Looks pretty awesome, if I do say so myself................more on that later.   :t11:
