I keep hearing people mention that they are scared to venture into vintage & antique card collecting because it's too foreign. When I first started, I said the same thing. However, with time & a little bit of guidance, I picked up a few tips and bits of information that have helped me. Though, to this day, I'm still learning.

Nonetheless, the most important thing I've come to understand is that there are plenty of decks worth collecting, well within most everyone's price range Click here for an example.

Take for instance...

The cost of owing an original 1890's Russell & Morgan Co. Texan #45 Deck is not cheap.

However thirty years ago, Philip Morris (Marlboro) produced a beautiful reproduction set of playing cards that included two wax paper wrapped decks of Texan #45 cards plus a booklet on the game of Poker packaged in a gold foiled imitation leather slipcase. The best part is that these are relatively easy to find, inexpensive to purchase, and should be in your collection.

Gold Foiled Imitation Leather Slipcase - Sweet!

These Texan #45 poker cards carry the Lone Star design (from the late 1890's), still the best known symbol of Texas.

Set comes with both Red & Blue

Raise your hands if you love small pips! I do! The old school Russell & Morgan Co. pips and courts are stellar!

NOTE: I know there are people out there in collectorville who shy away from purchasing cards produced by alcohol or tobacco companies, and I respect that. Though this 2-deck set has an exceptionally small amount of 'vice-like' branding. I believe Marlboro was focused on making great reproductions that day, rather than selling cigarettes.

This past week, I received twenty two (22) sets in AS ISSUED condition, just like the day they left the United States Playing Card Co.'s Cincinnati manufacturing plant.

Cease the moment and get your feet wet in regards to vintage cards. Buy this thirty year old, brand new cellophane'd two-deck Texan #45 playing cards for only $15.95 per set (plus shipping). First come, first served. Once I run out, I have no more.

Pick up your Texan #45 2-deck set of playing cards today!

Playing Card Plethora / Can anyone tell me about these stamps?
« on: September 07, 2014, 12:29:26 PM »
Hey everyone,

A few weeks ago, I picked up two decks that had this seal (see below). I'd never see it before, and couldn't find any information about it. Have you seen it before?

Photo 1

Photo 2

While the deck pictured has no cello, the other one does. We can deduce from the seal being under the cello, that it was applied at the factory. If anyone could shed some light on this seal, that would be great.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Asher

ps. My best guess is that these seals were from some special event held at USPC, but I could be wrong!

Read more here. Seems someone over at BondLifestyle must like playing cards.

Do you own a pack of Shifters by magician Theron Schaub? If yes, enjoy them! If you don't own some, here's your opportunity...

This is a poker-sized USPC deck. Theron Schaub, the creator of the deck, had them at Magic-Con this year. He is also one of the guys behind the Erdnase "notebook", which was a recreation of the 1st edition EATCT that had only the illustrations, but no text.

The cards themselves are quite nice. Surprised word hadn't gotten out about them a little more before now.

After a quick search on the forum for these playing cards, very little came up other than Mr. Reylek's quote above.

To make a long story short, Theron is an old friend, and I was able to get my hands on several bricks of Shifters. Want some? I'm offering them to you first, here on the Discourse, before they are sold through my various channels.

If you're sitting on the fence, I have a special limited time offer for Discourse members which you'll find listed at the bottom of this post.  BTW, these are the inaugural editions (Blue). First come, first serve. [images directly beneath FACT SHEET]

Supposedly, the 2nd editions will be a rich chocolate brown color.

Grab some Shifters for yourself today to add to your collection, or spend quality time with them practicing your sleight of hand / cardistry. Purchase them here, or PM me if you want to know about the discount when purchasing more than a dozen.

The Internet helps me connect with others who share similar interests. These associations force the examination of my own thoughts and feelings and I learn more about myself because of them. This kind of introspection allows my soul to make truthful decisions that guide my life. Recently, something serendipitous and unexpected happened and I'd like to share my story with you

Have you ever heard of Luxor Gali Gali, the Egyptian Magician?

Luxor Gali Gali (1902 - 1984) was known for his cups and balls finale producing several live baby chicks. But this article is not really about the famed Egyptian magician or his magical poultry. Rather, it's about a daughter's passionate journey to find her long-lost father, with the help of a stranger.

Sound interesting?

Take a moment to read my exciting tale. Once you're finished, post your thoughts.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / 10¢ Alabama Tax Stamp on Playing Cards
« on: January 05, 2014, 01:44:41 PM »
I want to preface by saying that I'm not from Alabama, so I've never had access to these kinds of tax stamps. For some folks living around that area though, this might be common-place.

I've always read about these kinds of state tax stamps but never owned a deck with one. However, after this last trip to my father's house in Florida, while rummaging through his magic collection,  I found one!

1972 10¢ Alabama Tax Stamp on the cellophane of a Bee Deck

Can anyone informed, or from 'bama confirm if these tax stamps (or a form of) are still being used today?

PM me, and let's get a conversation started.

Today we live in a world where knowledge & information are at our finger tips like never before.  Technology has made it so that anybody with an interest and a connection can receive a world class playing card education.

Below you'll find an official list of the current face styles USPC uses. Look carefully, and you'll notice that each one is slightly different.

Standard Index

Standard Index Tech-Art (TA2)

Standard Index Tech-Art (RTW)

Jumbo Index

Enhanced Image (EIRB)

Enchanced Image Tech-Art (EITB)

Enchanced Image "No Peak 21" (EIDB)

Jumbo Index Tech-Art (PR0027)

For future reference, when discussing USPC faces (non-custom), try to use the proper termonology. As an example, I cringe when someone mentions over-sized indices. As you can see from the official list above, it's technically referred to as Jumbo Index or Enhanced Image.

Now you know... and knowing is half the battle. (I just showed my age!)

Finally! I built up over 25 posts to be here, so I'm going to try this out.

TRADE: I would like to trade this sweet 1972 USPC A. Dougherty Pinochle Deck for something decent of yours.

Several images for your viewing pleasure:

Basic Info about this deck:
MANUFACTURER: United States Playing Card Company
YEAR PRINTED: 1972 (Cincinnati, Ohio)
TYPE: Pinochle
# OF CARDS: 48 cards
BACK DESIGN: Circle Back - Andrew Dougherty
COURT STANDARD: USPC Standard Index
CONDITION: Grade- Excellent. Deck has been played with, but all cards are present. The tuck box is in perfect shape, and the lower half of the original cellophane is still attached (wrinkle free). Overall, pretty decent for a 42 year old pack of playing cards.

OTHER NOTES: Do not confuse this deck with the same one BadPete69 is displaying here. While they have similar features, his is much older, and worth a lot more.

OTHER TERMS: This deck will ship from Canada. I will pay to ship it to you, and you will pay to ship yours to me.

Because this is my first trade, and I'm trying to get a fundamental understanding for how all of this works, I'm willing to trade this 1972 deck for just about anything within reason. I will take any sealed custom deck USPC has made within the last 10 years.

PM me if you have questions or want more info. Let the trading begin!

Lee Asher

ps. I hear your first trade is the luckiest trade!

Playing Card Plethora / Would YOU try this with your playing cards?
« on: December 20, 2013, 10:38:34 AM »
A friend from France just sent me a video that will surely create debate. He promises this is not a joke, and swears it actually works. I have not tried this method, but if you're thinking about it, I suggest you proceed with caution. Make your own judgement call.
