Title: Playing Card Auction - January to March 2014
Post by: 52plusjoker on January 16, 2014, 04:00:44 PM
Hi everyone
Our Club holds an annual mail auction in early spring each year. Details are on the Auction Page at the Club's website
http://www.52plusjoker.org/dnn/Auction/tabid/76/Default.aspx

There are 11 pages with seven decks per page and two pages with a total of eight selections of playing card ephemera. There are many antique decks, decks from Europe and a nice selection of vintage items, including several from the 1950's to the 1990s. Take a look, browse carefully through the pages at your convenience and download any of the pages you wish to have on a permanent basis.

Everyone is welcome to view the auction pages and those who wish to can download them to their computers. However to bid in the auction, you must be a member of 52 Plus Joker. I have posted pictures below of a few of the lots. Title card from Titanic transformation deck by Elaine Lewis - 2013; Joker Royal Playing cards NYCC c1890; King American Indian Souvenir c1905; Dougherty trade card c1875; back from ad deck for Cotton Belt RR c1905.

Please contact Tom or Judy Dawson if you have any questions - via a post or a PM.

Here's pictures of an interesting narrow advertising deck from the 1920's that is #38 in the upcoming auction.

These are really fun to collect and usually not too expensive - the older, wide ad decks with special ace of spades, joker, etc. tend to go for more.

Just a note to advise everyone that the bidding module on the auction webpage at http://www.52plusjoker.org/dnn/Auction/tabid/76/Default.aspx is now open. To view, and use, the module you need to be a member of 52 Plus Joker.

Here's a lot of interest in the 52+J club auction currently underway. Lot #53 - Aurum by Paul Carpenter - mint, sealed and #50 of a signed edition of only 90. Visit page 8 in the auction at
http://www.52plusjoker.org/dnn/Auction/tabid/76/Default.aspx
Not yet vintage but very collectible.

One thing I haven't seen any talk about here are decks made from different materials. For example aluminum! The current 52+J auction http://www.52plusjoker.org/dnn/Auction/tabid/76/Default.aspx has an aluminum deck issued as a souvenir for the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, NY in 1901. Here's pictures of the cards in Lot #57.

Already have a couple of those. I had a question about aging effects on cards. You recommended the Americanas. Right after I got them on-line, you mentioned having some to sell.

I know.  It was more for curious "old guard" members interested in checking out a modern custom deck.  Assuming a low bid got the lot, that's about the cheapest rate you'll find - it was the cheapest rate in the original Kickstarter project, which was about half the full MSRP.  Most old decks cost more than that whole six-pack!
