As many of you know, I do volunteer work at a hospital, a gig I discovered when Jason Brumbalow posted about it on Ellusionist's blog, back when he still worked for them.  The hospital is New York Methodist, located in Park Slope, a neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.  The hospital itself borders an area of affluence and an are of poverty, receiving pretty much every kind of person you could imagine.  And many, many children.

Once a month, I go to the hospital, entertaining children in both the pediatric unit and the pediatric emergency room.  I'm only asked to be there for two hours, but I typically spend five, sometimes more.  The work is fun, of course, but it's not always easy, especially when I'm getting physically exhausted from all the performing or if the child is seriously hurt or in pain.  But the pleasure and distraction it gives them makes me want to do it all the more.  I've had occasions when kids tell me they feel better afterwards and it makes it tougher to get my ego in and out of doorways...  :))

I established a personal tradition while I was there.  I brought some cheap, bulk casino decks I had, uncanceled decks from a failed casino, and gave them away to the kids I performed for.  I blew through over a gross of those in a fairly short time, then put out the call here for donations - either decks, or cash to buy more decks.  I received maybe a gross of assorted playing cards, and was able to purchase two gross of Streamlines from a nearby wholesaler.  The kids love it when I crack open a fresh deck, perform magic for them with it, then hand it to them to keep and take home.

The thing of it is, however, that I'm down to a single month's supply - actually less than a month's, which I'll supplement with my own decks or some cheap decks from a local store.  Fifteen packs are all that remain from the original allotment of Streamlines, and the donated decks are long gone.

I spoke with Bill Kalush about the situation earlier today, due to his extensive experience doing work very similar to what I've been doing through the Hocus Pocus Project, an outreach arm of the Conjuring Arts Research CenterApparently, I spoke to the right person, as he's graciously agreed to have the Expert Playing Card Company sponsor my deck fundraiser this time around!

The game plan is that I'm asking for donations of cash via PayPal.  Bill is helping with arrangements to supply decks for me at a significant discount from what I'd normally have to pay, and they'll be EPCC quality.  I'm still willing to accept donations of decks, but if you're choosing between spending cash on decks and spending on shipping or sending cash by PayPal, PayPal is the better alternative.  The more decks I can request from EPCC, the better the price discount that I can get and the more decks I'll have to give out to the kids I entertain.  If you simply hate working with PayPal - I know a few of you do - you can mail me a check or money order made out to me in US funds.

Send Paypal payments to me at this email address: donboyermagic@gmail.com.
Send checks, money orders, decks, etc. to:

Can you receive packages at that PO Box address?  I could thin out some decks in my extras pile and send them to you for the kids.

I've defiantly got some new decks to give. Do you have any handling or quality restrictions?

Hey Don, I've sent you a bit of money to help out - I'd like to send some decks from my parrot deck as well.  I don't know if they're the kind of quality you're used to (they're from Quality Playing Cards) but I think the kids would get a kick out of them since they're so colorful.  I should be getting them fairly soon, and I'll have to see how much I can spare after I fulfill all my kickstarter pledges.

Good luck with your project!  :)

Before I proceed, I want to thank everyone who's backing my effort here.  I've received a number of generous donations via PayPal so far and I'm grateful for every last penny.  It's not even been a full day yet and the total in cash donations is $105.00!

Can you receive packages at that PO Box address?  I could thin out some decks in my extras pile and send them to you for the kids.

I can receive a package of any size there - I'll just have to get it at the window if its beyond the size of a few small Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes, or the flatter of the two medium boxes.  It's not a problem.  I think if you know the size of USPS PO Boxes, mine is a size 3 (I think).  Size 1 is the tiniest, Size 2 is double that size, Size 3 is triple the size of a 2.  I was tempted to get a size 4 but the price was a bit too high for my purposes.

Yeah, I'd be happy to send some decks to you to hand out as well if you like.

Please check in your case that it's not prohibitively expensive to ship.  If it is, simply send cash instead and Bill will help me convert them into decks!

Think of it like this - you would spend X GBP getting a handful of decks to me.  If X is high enough, though, that same amount of cash could possibly get me more than the number of decks you planned to ship in the first place.  It's much cheaper to send ones and zeroes to the other hemisphere than it is to send physical objects!  But of course, if X is low enough, I'm happy to receive your decks with gratitude.

I've defiantly got some new decks to give. Do you have any handling or quality restrictions?

If a deck is REALLY BAD, like "99¢ store" bad, I have tricks I can use them for where I destroy a couple of cards in the process.  Handling is much less of an issue with those tricks.  Obviously, though, the preference would be something decent for magic, or at least for playing - decks that are better for games than magic I give to a different volunteer program at the same hospital.  A number of high schoolers grab a big tote bag each filled with games and puzzles and such and go from room to room, offering to play with the kids for a while.  Playing cards for them always come in handy.  I sent them some UNO cards I stumbled upon at a 99¢ store once and they were happy for them - kids love UNO.

Trust me, few decks out there are worse than the Chinese-made Streamlines.  If they're at least that good, I can work with them!  If not, like I said above, kids love playing card games with the other volunteers.

I'l like to pass on to you an email I received earlier today which surprised the heck out of me.

Hello Don I saw your post about cards for kids. I frequently donate my time to children's hospitals and donate items to the children's magic Safari and other charity organizations and have for many years.

I would be happy to donate cards to your cause if you would like some.

Keep up the good work! De'vo

Yes, it's THAT De'vo - De'vo vom Schattenreich from Handlordz.  We exchanged a few emails and he's stated that he's sending me a gross of assorted playing cards which will be in the mail Monday - some from his inventory, some from his personal collection and some garden-variety decks most performers use.  I'm glad he mentioned that some of what he's sending are his April Fool's Decks from this year and last year.  The kids would go absolutely nuts for them, the younger girls in particular.

He also went on to say that he does similar work himself with children in hospitals - in fact, a member of the Handlordz team was stricken with cancer and he raised money to help with the expenses.  He called that act "the greatest thing I've accomplished as De'vo," and I think it's absolutely fantastic and kind-hearted of him to do so.  He mentioned that it was OK if I mentioned his gift on the board, though he doesn't do this sort of thing for publicity - I responded that this is the sort of thing that people need to know about, to view him as a role model and make contributions either in cash or with your presence and your skills as a volunteer.  His gift is extremely generous and I can't thank him enough.

Please keep your donations coming!  A gross is excellent, but a gross only lasts about a half-year at best, sometimes even less.  My wife may kill me for putting so many decks of cards in our home in addition to my own collection, but I want to raise as much funds as possible - the more you give today, the longer that supply will last, keeping kids happy for months to come!  A hospital can be a scary place, even for older kids - a pack of cards is a reminder to them of life back home, a home that hopefully most will return to quickly, it's a distraction from their pain and discomfort and they help the time go faster than any TV program can.

Much appreciated.  I'm getting a pretty good response so far, but that doesn't mean I couldn't use more!

Here's an update, folks...

I've had a number of generous contributions of cash both in person (I met some members of 52 Plus Joker over the weekend)  and via PayPal.  To all of you, I give my thanks.

Below, you'll find two photos!  The first is a contribution from our very own !An0nym0u5.  The second is a very generous (and heavy) donation from De'vo vom Schattenreich himself.  I'm grateful to the both of you, since I'm due to visit the hospital tomorrow!  I can't want to spring a few of those "April Fool's" decks on the kids!

I'm going to contact Bill Kalush in the next day or two and inquire about the best way to apply the funds I've collected to the purchase of decks from Expert PCC.  I'll keep you all posted and let you know when I'm ending the fundraiser - if you wanted to contribute something, NOW is the time!

Thank you, everyone!

Hi Don,
I just want to say I think it's amazing all the work you are doing with these children and you deserve some type of award. I am not currently in any position to give you one so I have sent some funds for you to buy decks. I hope it helps, and Thank you for being you.

I spotted that - it's very much appreciated.

Ladies and gents, below you will find photo of the contents of the package of a generous donor, PrincessTrouble.  Thank you so much!

I'm going to declare the fundraiser closed.  Your generosity has helped me, providing me with playing cards for some time to come to hand out to sick and injured children as gifts in an effort to make a strange and scary place a little more tolerable.  I will gladly accept additional decks of cards if you wish to send any, but I have enough in funds to last for a good while now, thanks to you!  Another shout-out to De'vo vom Schattenreich as well as Renee LeCompte/maggock - they each mentioned that they has some additional decks to send, for which I'm quite grateful.

I'll be collecting all the funds raised and talking with Bill Kalush about turning that cash into inexpensive, high-quality decks of playing cards - I thank him very much for all the effort that he's putting into the project for me.

While I'm on the subject of charitable generosity, allow me to offer a great suggestion - Bill Kalush's Conjuring Arts Research Center has an outreach arm called the Hocus Pocus Project. Since 2007, he's been sending magicians into places such as schools, hospitals, veterans' groups and even juvenile detention centers.  They're not there simply to entertain - they provide instruction in magic, giving their audience a confidence and a feeling of empowerment they previously lacked.  CARC is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and as such, donations you make to the Hocus Pocus Project may be tax-deductible (check with your tax preparer).  Please check it out.  The project is expanding in New York City this year and nationally next year, so if you have some talents with the magical arts, it's possible that Mr. Kalush could use a man or woman such as yourself to join the ranks.
