Deck Reviews! / Re: Battle 45: Seasons by Alex Chin vs Mana by Erik Mana

Wow....my want list just keeps growing around here. Both amazing decks with fantastic design and concept, but I give the slight edge to the Seasons deck...but there both on my list now, lol

Ya Don, i'm not one to spend that kind of coin on a deck or Zippo. I was just wondering for information sake. This is one of those things were if you were lucky enough to get one early on your happy  :)

These days, they're not that hard to obtain - yet.  Last time I looked, some weeks ago, they were $50 on eBay.  If ever there was a time to get them, this would be that time, before scarcity drives up the price.

At the moment the cheapest deck is going for $55 and thats from overseas, the lowest domestic pack is going for $75......ouch

I apologize if my question wasn't specific, I think that's because, again, I'm new to all of this and trying to gain some understanding. None of my questions have to do with selling anything, it's truly just to get a better understanding of playing cards.

Hey everyone, 1st off thank you for all your help over this 1st week of hanging out with all you fine folks....well, most of you anyway. ;)  I gotta tell ya my head is spinning with all this information. I did have a question, now I've taken the time to go searching through numerous threads, watch a ton of reviews and googled a bunch more.

So coming at this as a laymen, what are the selling features of a deck? Strip away the design and artistry and what makes one better than another? I'm not a cardist or magician, I can feel the difference between some decks when I hold them. The quality of the cards and tuck box are somewhat noticeable to me. But I'm looking for your opinions to start to get a better understanding of the product. Maybe this is irrelevant since I'm not a "professional" but I would still like to know.

Handling, weight, viscosity, MPG  ??? Why do you like what you like......remember, BLANK cards!

I just wish the combo was cheaper.

I might offer that German guy about $40 + shipping for the cards/lighter.

The lighter is actually pretty sweet, has great detail in the design, still one of my favorites. I think the price should be around $30, I sold one not too long ago ended up going for $40 on eBay. If I'm not mistaken this seller has been trying to sell that set for his current price for months with no luck...its a tad on the high side regardless if your a Zippo Collector or Card collecotr. If your really interested I would wait, they pop up on ebay for around $40 BIN or BIN / Offer...just need some patience  ;)

1234
Sparkz do you want the lighter itself, too?

Really just looking for the deck, unless you want to get rid of them as a set...so it's up to you.

Welcome to Discourse  :D

I'm happy to be owning one of them, and it is sad to see them go. But....what took them so long?!?

I would've expected them to sell out a lot faster, after all the promotions they've had to give these away.

As of two years ago they had about 1,000.  They were never that easy to obtain in the first place.

So i've seen the Second Edition available and have it marked for purchase, i Picked up a few of the White Ghosts. My question is, is there some distinction between the 1st and 2nd release? Are they marked as such? Also, are the cards and contents the same in the 2nd release as the 1st?

As I've come across decks that aren't readily available I've noticed that there are some reprints, re-released and such and just want to make sure I know what I'm looking at.

As always, thanks for the continuing education, lol

As a collector and not a "professional", color variations once they get past 2 or 3 are way down on the totem pole for reasons to buy them. Unless of course your favorite color is produced all of a sudden.

I have a simple rule, if it comes down to a color variation and a completely new Zippo/Deck...the new always wins, money better spent  ;)

Fantastic looking deck, I wish I had started collecting sooner, lol. Congratulation on a successful project. I got them on my want list, see how lucky I am, lol

Gratz again!

The red deck will become available on HOPC...

Oh, that's right - noob collector!  http://www.houseofplayingcards.com

Randy gave me a shout, I think I'm covered  ;) ....but added HOPC to my Shop list, which is getting pretty hefty, lol

Thanks for helping out guys, Brown I'm gonna give Alex some time to dig his up since he got back to me 1st. Thanks for the link Ronyo, ya it's kind of crazy what these sets are going for now, I have 2 sealed gift sets w/Zippo, which is why I'm looking for a deck to crack open for scans on my site.

About 6 months ago you could get these New for $18.00 (Deck and Zip), Since they announced that they were discontinued the prices have been a bit steep, I guess timing is everything...glad to see that THAT doesn't change with Playing Cards, lol

Gotta rummage through my open deck suitcase tomorrow, will PM you as soon as I find it. :)

No problem  ;)

Thanks again

I'm looking for a 2nd Zippo deck to add to my collection to crack open. I have a sealed one so I'm fine with an open deck as long as it's complete and in good condition.

Thanks

!!!NOOB ALERT!!!

Strictly a non professional opinion here, but...

While I feel the Ignite deck is a nice follow up to this "Elements" series, I like the Fathom deck a bit more.

I was able to get a couple of these at the 2 for $25, my 1st KS Backing, can't wait to see them in person and kicked in the extra couple bucks for the seal. I really like the design concept and it was well thought out and planned, keeping on eye on any future released from them.

There funding has been amazing.  :D

As for investment...I think Froggo said it best, there are better more stable things to invest in. That being said, Don's Superman analogy is spot on...you just never know. Over the last week my want list has grown, but has also had deletions to it because I'm realizing what is a true custom deck and what is a more mass-market, readily available deck.

Ah, but some really like the mass-market stuff because it's what they grew up with.  I have memories of seeing Bicycle, Bee, Arrco, Tally-Ho, Hoyle decks and more all throughout my childhood - airline decks as well held a special interest because my godfather (who also became my step-father) worked at an airport for one of the international airlines and would bring some of these cool decks home for my brothers and me to play with.  I even remember those "cool" Lo-Vision cards from Bicycle, before they introduced the current four-color editions of them; my uncles and grandfather loved playing with them at night when we were camping in trailers because they were easier to see by lantern and firelight.

Vintage collectors in particular can be stricken with the nostalgia factor when it comes to building their collections.  The commonness or dollar value of a deck may be very little when compared to the memories it evokes.  Even the variations that are as simple as mere color changes to the backs can hold appeal for those reasons.

I agree with you completely Don, for me it's always been about what I like, a neat piece to add to the collection or it has some personal meaning as you stated...rarely about what it could be worth. I actually took my biweekly trip to the antique mall this weekend and came across a deck of Gladstone playing cards, open but still in the box. Both box and cards are in very nice condition, but I really don't know if there worth anything, but that's not why I got them. They were a neat little vintage representation for my collection. I guess my point was that a main stream deck is unlikely to become that "Investment" piece. I also picked up a couple plain Bicycle decks because I like the color combination, I'm still keeping one sealed, but I'm pretty sure that I'm still going to have to pay for my kids to go to college, lol

Its kind of funny, we have the same "Issues" on the site I belong to for my Zippo's. You can disagree with what he does, but Don's Obi-wan quote could not be truer. I think the problem in the last decade is that a lot of collectors are not collectors, they are speculators and most of the times don't have a clue about what they are speculating on, they're looking to make a buck, and that's why you read articles about a guy investing in Beanie Babies to put his kids through college and now is declaring bankruptcy and his kids have to work at McD's instead.

Is it wrong, for me, yes....can you blame him? Well, if Apple can put out a new iPhone every six months in a new color and millions flock to replace the perfectly good one they've owned for the last 6 months at full cost...can you really blame the little guy?

If you dislike his business practice you can do 2 things, one let people now, just as your doing here, and 2, don't support him.

Note: I see these decks are now selling with a $10.00 BIN
