Design & Development / Retro Card Box Design
« on: April 07, 2014, 07:31:00 PM »
I am hesitant to post this here as I didn't get much feedback on my previous project but I figured I'd post it anyway. If you can give your opinion on the artwork and how I can make it more retro I would appreciate it.

Btw I want to change the font as I do not think it fits the old product packaging that I am going for.

Anyone ever just have old decks handed to you because people know you collect cards? This just happened to me and it came with a rather interesting story.

Just recently someone sent me a letter from London with a deck of cards called Black Pack. The letter tells the story of a man named Alasdair MacGaw (he has since passed away). According to the letter, about 25 years ago Alasdair discovered that casinos only used decks of playing cards once. Since London is multicultural he believed that black people were alienated by seeing white faces on every set of paying cards. His idea was to have a set of cards with black faces on the Kings, Queens and Jacks.

He had this set made up in a print run of only 200 and then tried selling them to all the casinos in London. However, he hit a wall because he could not afford a large enough print run to make the deck cost low enough for the casinos to buy them.

At any rate, the deck was printed by Fournier in the late 80's. It is a pinnacle sized deck and this is apparently the only one left in existence. It is marked as a first edition, has some cool design elements and is overall a nice deck. It is a smooth finish and is still rather snappy but I do not want to mess with it too much.

It probably has more sentimental value to me as it was sent to me with a personal letter describing the story behind the deck. I do not think anyone is looking for this deck or even knows it existed but I thought the forum members would enjoy it. Also, if Kickstarter were around back then, I feel like he would have been on it trying to get rich.

Playing Card Plethora / Bicycle Monster Montage (KS) - Relaunch
« on: December 22, 2013, 09:55:34 PM »
This is my first playing card project. I teased the project on my site but I wanted to drop the same info here.

In about a month’s time, Artist Carlos Bercini and I will be launching a custom playing card project on Kickstarter.com. We have been designing a playing card deck for release in late January called Bicycle Monster Montage. The deck is inspired by vintage monster and horror movies from the first half of the 20th century. While most of the designs are not being released at this time, we have decided to tease the new project by creating a teaser or “movie” poster that incorporates the major themes of the deck.

Below you will also see only two of the court card designs that will be featured in the project – The Mummy and Frankenstein’s monster. Two timeless monsters that are the epitome of the monster genre. Please keep your eyes out for more information on this project as it comes closer to the launch date in late January.

For those curious there will be no zombies apart of this deck. We really tried to pull from some classic monsters as well as make way for some monsters that haven't been given much attention. It will be a unique mix of monsters that haven't been overdone or played out.

Designs are subject to change.

Design & Development / Fair cost/designer pricing
« on: September 19, 2013, 07:26:08 PM »
This might be a topic already but I am on my mobile phone and searching was being a pain.

So this is an open ended question that takes a lot of things into consideration but what is the going rate for a complete custom playing card deck design? As a non designer I constantly see projects go up on KS that only cover production costs (if that). If we put quality at Jackson's or encarded's level of work, what is a fair cost for that? Obviously it needs to cover their time and work but it also needs to fit within card economics or else i could see decks being really expensive. Like would a $5k design or a $10k design make sense for cards. The design is there but is it fair for the price of the deck once you take production costs into account?

Bc i run tuckcase and speak with authority on there, I was recently contacted by a person looking for advice on this and I honestly had no advice to give. I told him to come here and ask or go directly to a designer but I havent seen a post about it since I was asked this and it got me curious so I'm now asking.

Let the opinions roll bc I'd love to be enlightened on this matter.

Saw this posted on Big Blinds Facebook page. Looking good. I like the Venetian and trippy aspect to this design. Definitely something I want to see more of.

Currently there is no release date.

I posted about this on my blog as well.

Design & Development / Post-Edwardian Period Double or Duel Deck Idea
« on: July 15, 2013, 01:21:35 AM »
So I am not a designer but I got thinking of an idea that would make for interesting double deck....

The idea is based on the Edwardian and Post-Edwardian Period or the early 1900's to around 1918 in the UK. If you are unfamiliar with this period think of the TV show Downton Abbey or an earlier series Upstairs, Downstairs in the 70's. One might even think of the Titanic.

Some may guess where I am going with this.... One deck would focus on the upstairs of the house featuring the lords, masters, aristocrats etc...and another deck would focus on the downstairs of the house featuring the Butlers, housemaids, footman, cooks, valet etc...

Anyway if you know the history of this period, I think it can make for some interesting artwork on two decks especially the contrast from downstairs to upstairs.

If anyone wants to take this idea and run with it be my guest. I'd love to see something like this get produced but I don't have the funds or the design skills to do it myself. It would probably be picked up by a lot of sites considering the craze with Downton Abbey these days. If you decide to do it let me know and I can assist with writing about it, marketing and bringing this thing to the people.

here are some images of downton abbey to give people the idea....

Saw this pop up on KS today. I wonder if uspcc will print this given the Lucifer reference. Thoughts?

I spoke with the designer of some of Ellusionist's most popular decks, Lee McKenzie, this week regarding his involvement with Ellusionist. I posted the interview on my site http://tuckcase.com/2013/05/23/exclusive-interview-with-the-artist-behind-ellusionist-playing-cards-lee-mckenzie/ but below is just a small snippet of what was said...

In 2008, I started designing the Arcane deck and I became the Ellusionist playing card designer. My dream of launching my own deck was put on hold for the next 5 years…but not for much longer.

I think you guys can speculate....

Design & Development / Origins Playing Card Design
« on: May 22, 2013, 07:57:39 PM »
I stumbled upon this deck and it is simple but also intriguing. Rick Davidson of New Zealand is putting this deck out but there is not information on it currently.

I also posted about this on my site. I am waiting on a reply from him regarding plans for this deck.

Part 2 of the Federal 52 will launch mid June and will feature the Silver Certificate deck and the reserve note deck. I spoke to Jackson and he shared an image of the tuck case for the Federal 52 reserve note deck.  Attached below.

I also did a q and a with him posted here.

Playing Card Plethora / Theory 11 playing card finishes
« on: May 19, 2013, 09:21:40 PM »
Any idea why Theory 11 promotes their eco-friendly stocks and paper more than the actual finish and stock used? Every deck released describes that their decks are eco but I do not know how that makes handling or durability better.

Also, do all Theory 11 decks use the same finish? Every deck I've handled seems to be similar but I don't know.

I like how ellusionist explains they use their exclusive Performance Coating and even posted a blog (http://blog.ellusionist.com/air-cushion-or-something-better/)about it.

Playing Card Plethora / Bicycle Tutankhamun (KS)
« on: May 16, 2013, 07:50:30 PM »
Just saw this deck on Kickstarter. Gonna be honest, I think if you touch Egyptian art you should do more with it than this. I do not have high hopes for this deck because IMO I think execution is poor and the design is less than desirable. Maybe I am too harsh.

Introduce Yourself / Hello from the Poconos in PA
« on: May 15, 2013, 08:42:15 AM »
Hey I am Scott from the Poconos. I recently got into card collecting after pledging for a few decks on Kickstarter. I had no idea a community exists for people into card collecting but it makes sense. I love the art work and history involved in cards.

Anyway I like reviewing new decks and follow new releases. I hope to learn more here and become a part of the group.

Thanks
Scott
