Mystery Box - theory11: February 28th, 2014
-
I wonder if what's in the Mystery Box is that game changer deck of cards Theory11 was talking about last year, but it never got released due to whatever reason. I have to admit if that actual box was the tuckbox for a deck of cards, it'd be pretty cool.
-
Except Zenneth Kok is already doing a box like that more or less.
-

Too true. It makes this deck look a day late and a dollar short.
-
There was a lot of huff about the mystery box being a Mentalism trick. They use a cryptex for the lock, I assumed something along the lines of da Vinci zone that max maven came out with.
-
Could be a marked or gaffed deck.
But yeah. VERY similar to the Question Deck. Should be interesting, nonetheless.
-
If it is some sort of trick or gaffed deck, it would be a first for Theory11. Up until now, their magic has been mostly confined to DVDs and video downloads, and to my knowledge they've never released a trick deck of their own design.
-
Well just 5 more days til we find out for sure. ;D
-
I never liked mystery when it comes to spending my money. We've had a few examples of companies selling things with many unknowns. Promises of videos to come, join a club and hope its worth it. Sometimes it is worth it and sometimes people get skunked. My point is, a company hides the details (mystery) because the product is more hype rather then value. At the end of the day, we have a wood box. You might pay 10x more for what's inside because of a wood box.

I can see your point, certainly. But there are occasions where even the company itself doesn't know exactly what they're going to provide you with, so they can't make specific promises of anything. I'm 100% certain that when Ellusionist formed the Black Club, they had no clue that in their first year they'd give away or make available at discount everything that they ended up giving or offering. They just knew they wanted to make it worth the cash paid for the membership, and it appears to have worked well, at least for the first year.
It would be nice if those occasions were more the rule than the exception...

Maybe something related to Harry Houdini? RAHRY, Harry...I tried using other coding stuff I've done in the past and nothing really lines up.

That confirms its playing card related to me. Lyle (theory11) would have ignored this thread if we were wrong to assume.

Theory11 just posted this on their facebook/instagram, with the caption "#jjabrams #badrobot" attached to it.
So now we know it's got something to do with jj abrams or at least his production company, bad robot.
I think Star Wars / Star Trek crossover promotion is a possibility here. His new tv series which is coming out soon, Believe, is probably the strongest contender here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Believe_(TV_series)
A long shot might be one of the tv shows that bad robot produces currently, like almost human or revolution.
EDIT: The more I think about it, the more my money is on Believe. The show is created by Alfonso Cuaron. So a Theory11 tie in with a JJ Abrams/Bad Robot new tv show headed by Cuaron is a very big deal indeed. The show is airing in a couple weeks so this is just about the right time to start building hype for it.
-
You beat me to it double, but we'll know soon enough, I gotta say the J.J Abrams association was not expected.
-

In hindsight, it looks like it's the Bad Robot logo embossed on the packaging/tuckbox. The size and everything does point to a deck of cards. Curious to see what the thing actually is and the cost of it.
-
Five years ago, Lost creator J.J. Abrams gave a now-famous speech at TED Talks that summarized his entire approach to storytelling. In a childhood trip to Lou Tannen's Magic Store, Abrams bought a "mystery magic box" — a box that has always remained a mystery.
"I bought this decades ago, but if you look at this, you'll see it's never been opened. Ever," said Abrams. "Why have I not opened this, and why have I kept it?… It represents infinite possibility. It represents hope. It represents potential. What I love about this box — and what I realized I sort of do, in whatever it is that I do — is I find myself drawn to infinite possibility and that sense of potential. And I realize that mystery is the catalyst for imagination... What are stories besides mystery boxes?"
-
He also collects cards.

He also collects cards.
Probably the best reason to work with theory11 on a deck of cards. Here's hoping, if it is a deck, it's complete custom and not just custom AoS, Joker(s), Back design and tuckbox.
-
Well, it's a deck, except that it's also a gigantic "JJ Abrams never opened his mystery box so you don't get to see anything but a a bit of the case and the ace of spades" cop-out.
Oh, and you get to pay $10 a deck to figure out if you like the design or not.
Yeah, screw that.

Wow, did this actually just jack up their server.........I didn't think it was that big a deal.

Put my order in for a few, well, after having to wait for their servers to come back online. LOL Don't think they were expecting that to happen.
-
From the video trailer, it looks like standard number cards while it has custom courts (similar in design to Sentinels, at least to my eyes). I really do wish there was some proper photos of the deck.
$1 from deck will be donated to 826 National, a non-profit dedicated to promoting creative writing in schools and workshops around the USA, which is a plus.
Honestly at 10$/deck it's still cheaper than the collaborations that D&D have done, which are 12$ (HMNIM deck) and 15$ (Bruce Lee deck).
-
Oh woah!!! It's by J.J. Abrams? I am actually a big fan of his works!
Now I feel pretty awesome to coincidentally release a deck on the same theme with him!
-
I am so tempted to get that nice wooden box :-\

Overhyped product... and overpriced...
T11 is getting desperate...

They hit some, They miss some.
I DON'T think theory11 is getting desperate. It's not a bad product. I feel like the promotion was poor since day one. The first thing they should of done was teased that they are working with J.J. Abrams on a new project. The box should have been the last thing they teased. They basically killed it for me every night with another tease of the box. The focal point of the promotion should have been the cards.
Does it change anything it terms of buying the product? Absolutely not. I have NO interest in either the cards or the box.
-
Meh. I really wish Theory would do something unique with the standard cards. An intesting suit color or something, otherwise I feel like I'm buying a deck off Zazzle.

The courts aren't completely standard...
I like it. Would love to have the box but it's really not in my budget. Might get some cards, though - I love J.J. Abrams' work.

Yep, if you see their video, you would realise there are customised courts, more than likely to suit the logo of bad robot.
I do admit that for the hype they have created, it is a little disappointing to see just one non-fully customised deck. The wrapped decks remind me of D&D's mystery deck, and i thought it would be really cool if they had something similar. Imagine opening a box filled with 12 unknown decks rather than 12 wrapped decks which we already know what's inside. Heck, a colour change would seem nicer at this point.
I really love the box and really am quite tempted to get it. But to get 12 mystery decks for the box seems a little overkill. I understand the cost includes the deck & box, but i really don't wanna get 12 decks of the same card just for 1 cool box.
-
I have to ask, what hype? I never heard of this before last night! Granted, I use Facebook only when I have to, but still - it doesn't sound like they're shouting about it off the rooftops or anything close to that.
-

They've been teasing about it all month, but not as bad. I think it was just once a week until this week where they've been releasing more stuff every night.
But to everyone complaining about the "hype", what else do you expect a company to do? Yes, they're tease and get people excited for a product they've got coming out. It's really their job and if you feel like you're disappointed by the hype every time, then just ignore it and just check back day of release to see what it's about. I honestly, thought the tease and everything was fitting.
Considering there's no usual bulk discount on the deck, I think the Mystery Box with the brick is probably the most bang for buck depending on how much value you want to put on the wooden box.

That is what ebay is for is it not. you get 12 decks you keep 2-3 one you open so you can get pics of what your sell on the site. you sell the other 9-10 at $15 plus shipping and you gat almost all of your money back.

...Did you even take a look at the deck? The court cards are completely custom.
This deck looks AMAZING. I love the back. It's great to see T11 back on their feet with fully custom designs.
And, of course, the box looks brilliant.

Some people still remember when T11 was touting the Monarchs just before release as being the BEST. DECK. EVAH. Then they removed the gold ink from the back design, and the end result was a decent performer that didn't in any way live up to the hype. It left a bad taste in people's mouths that some still haven't forgotten or forgiven.
-
Sry I was referring to the pips and cards 2-9.

Hmmm that sounds great. What imaginary eBay have you been selling on?
You won't get more then the retail company is currently selling it for. Let's not forget about the shipping you spend to get the product. Then there are eBay fees and Paypal fees. Plus your own time to create listings, pack, print shipping labels and the storage of extra items for weeks.
I don't recommend it to others.
-
So here they are the Mystery Decks, aka, Bad Robot from T11, discuss...........
PS. Sorry Don, as I hit Post I realized I should have added it to the existing thread.
-
It's fixed.
I'm really disappointed in those faces. It might as well be Robocycle 2.0...

Agree 100%. I can't remember if I ordered 2 or 3 decks. After seeing those pics, if it's just 2 that I ordered I'll keep one wrapped and the other not even bother opening the cellophane. Oh well, they can't all be winners I guess.
-
Great photo, Sparkz. Seriously, they could be promo shots by T11 for their stuff.
Maybe I'm the odd one out, but I do personally like the Robocycle deck and I do like the Mystery Box/Bad Robot deck. I like robots too. I can't wait to get my decks.
-
The tuck looks awesome, the back is pretty nice, and I'm kind of meh on the faces. Will probably order one, and leave it wrapped. 20 years from now, I'll open it and be surprised. ;D
-
Like most recent T11 decks, the tuck is awesome, the backs look good and the faces leave something to be desired.
-
In case anyone wanted to see the Anamorphic bonus cards in action, they should be cut out of the cards for the best effect, but you get the idea.

There are people who liked that deck. But I think even you would have to admit that they're few and far between. I get the feeling it wasn't a big hit for USPC, and the fact that T11 did the design was never advertised - I discovered it by accident when I looked under the deck seal.
-
people keep hinting that there is more in the box besides the cards and the letter from JJ, I highly doubt it, someone would have leaked it by now

Hey, you never know. It's possible that it was a secret so good, it was worth keeping...
-
The day the Interwebs keeps a secret, I wont notice, because ill be outside shooing away the flying pigs from my money tree, whilst sipping upon a tasty glass of Vermouth, chilled to perfection with imported ice cubes from hell.
-
Got my package last week but one deck was missing from my order. I have an email in at T11. Waiting to hear from them

Info on the Mystery Box
Those of us who bought the box were asked to keep this quiet by J.J Abrahms himself (or I am assuming he did, since I didn't actually bother reading the letter)
and having not opened my mystery box
I can definitively say
"There definitely MIGHT be something inside the box other than cards"
Remember you heard it here first

Love or hate the deck, I think the "Story" behind the Mystery Box is great. I know eventually someone is going to post the contents somewhere, I hope its a long time from now ;)
What are the odds that the contents of the box aren't all the same?? :o
-
LOL, it's not like JJ Abrams found the Ark of the Covenant and is parting it out or something. If I had 150 dollar bills I was bored with and wanted to give them to T11 you can bet I'd be examining those contents post haste. I'm way too visually curious to not dig in. :)

Well as one "Without" a box, it's easy for me to say keep it a mystery ;D
Let me speculate in peace Paul, lol
-
I would open it. I like the mystery, but part of that great feeling is solving it.
I will say brian brushwood was selling these on his site - scamstuff.com - and including a mystery gift that was really close to him. That was the reason I bought it. Which I now regret because I have a deck that has cards that IMO are crap - but a nice ? wrapping - and a little magazine brian used as a promotional thing when he started doing college shows.
-
now that someone WON the T11 contest - any clues as to what the big "secret" is in the tuck case? Someone told me it was in the deck liner? I'm going to go blind staring at this thing....
EDIT: of course, as soon as I post this, I found it

My best bet would be a black deck with red lining. Either way, I'm liking the black and red color scheme.

I agree with you, I like the black and red color scheme. I'm not a fan of the first bad robot deck though, at all really. I hope this is very different.
-
I'm wagering it's the same deck in a new color scheme Not necessarily black with red - that's just the paper wrapper covering the box. But it's possible.
-
Ill fancy a wager! My guess is backs will be black.
-
I wonder if they will release the same box for a mix brick. The box looks much better compared to some others *Cough* Ellusionist *Cough*, but did not get it because of the high price point and not knowing what to do with 12 decks.
Ok...in all honesty, i still might not get the box if it is a mix brick. But at least it gets me considering.

Yeah, my views on the first deck are pretty much the same as Fes'.
T11 made out that they were really excited for the V1 release, and seeing as T11 have a great track record when it comes to putting out really good designs, I thought the deck was going to be impressive.
When I saw the back design, I was stunned by how unspectacular, and quite frankly, how boring it was. The robot courts were interesting... but I couldn't use them for games. Overall, wasn't a fan of that deck.
If the V2 has the same back design, but in a different colour, then for me it would appeal even less than Madison Rounders in pink.

Looks like it is now available https://store.theory11.com/products/mysterybox-black-edition (https://store.theory11.com/products/mysterybox-black-edition)
I purchased the box last time, the box is kinda cool rustic and with an interesting patina. I will not be purchasing this new deck.
