A Cellar of Fine Vintages / A white whale from Mrs Robinson

The white whale at the top of my list is captured. I've been after this piece since seeing the scans available online several years back. I have only seen it available for sale twice since then and am ecstatic to have snatched it up!

The vibe you have going with these pictures is very intriguing. I'm excited. I have a few friends from outside the playing card community tuned in to them as well.

Title says it all. I am looking for a Silver Certificate screen print poster from the Federal 52 series. Let me know if you have one.

Being from Oklahoma, with over 200 lakes and 30 rivers I spend a lot of free time fishing. It's peaceful and relaxing, almost like meditation.  In a hillbilly, redneck, country kind of way. Not that I am any of those things.. 8)

Have you ever gone and fished for paddlefish in Grand Lake? I heard about it at a fisheries joint meeting between Oklahoma and Texas this year. Sounds like a blast. That is not me in the picture, just a cool paddlefish photo on Grand Lake.

Thanks for the info! Looking at the kickstarter photo with the gilded black ops deck from the back really does look good. Methinks the black and white with gold trim is going to turn out pretty classy.

I wonder what led to the decision do the black ops version in simply black and white. Not to take anything away from it but that sepia toned one just pops in comparison. I guess I am just complimenting the colorized vs the other one here. If I hadn't seen them side by side I would probably appreciate the black and white one more but in this example it just gets overshadowed. I do like how it is a white background without aging though. It'll be nice to have a deck with faux aged and normal white backed versions in the same project. Stellar artwork yet again Jackson. I look forward to each release.

When you do nail down a solid release time and day let us know the details!

That ace is fantastic as well as those jokers!

Great deck concept! I like the cards you shared. It looks like something I would possibly back, but I offer a little warning. You are going in to this kickstarter campaign just a few days after a heavy hitter in the Kings Wild Army deck. Being limited on funds, this will affect collectors like me that have to make a choice between a highly anticipated deck and your new well crafted entry. As a result if I get to back it will be very late in the campaign as the month ends and at a lower price than I might normally be willing to pay. Maybe consider launching a week or two later to avoid running a parallel campaign and reduce the overlap. This would allow your project to bleed over to the beginning of October and a new budget for people who set a month to month limit. Maybe it is no big deal, just an idea.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: The Playing Card Collectors' "Bubble"
« on: August 27, 2014, 11:12:03 PM »
After going back to read this topic from the start I have to say that it is one of the most interesting threads on the site. I think I have been turned in to one of those Kings Wild collectors Jackson was talking about earlier, but I came about it from a different direction. I was a vintage collector as opposed to a non collector and pretty green at that! Naturally, after my initial interest I did internet research and came across many of the modern luxury decks with the Fed 52 series being the one that stood out the most. The price was ridiculous to me at the time but I eventually came around. Although I am primarily a vintage collector I dabble in this modern stuff a little more than I probably should. I went on a streak where I bought up many of the cool looking decks that I wanted but that time has waned. Now I keep an eye out for what Jackson is doing at kings wild because I enjoy the look and the themes match up with my interests. There is a vintage vibe with what they have going on. If he were to make amazing line drawings of aliens and put them in a deck... well no.

So what does this have to do with bubbles and price points etc? Well, as a vintage deck collector I want my money to go in that direction. Heck, I can sometimes find insane deals on stuff that actually is 100 years old and rare as opposed to artificially limited! So why would I want to spend huge chunks of money on modern stuff. I made the decision to follow King's Wild with the bulk of my modern deck money while dabbling very little in to other kickstarter projects. But I don't even buy all their stuff. I haven't gotten Hive yet, and I didn't back Sherlock.

In truth I am ready to get this bubble a bursting just give me the needle! Maybe then I can grab up a lot of those gorgeous decks that I currently cannot afford. But seriously I think we overestimate the popularity of this hobby sometimes. It has grown by leaps and bounds for sure, but I'm still the only person I know locally who does it. When baseball cards were popular I knew 50 people at school who I could trade with every day. I just don't think it has that sort of reach yet, nor do I think it ever will.

In closing I will let you in on a theory I have. Like I said, I follow King's Wild, but as a vintage collector I don't trust em. I know Jackson buys up vintage decks as well. I think he is trying to drain the funds from the competition so that he can swipe up all the old cards and stash them away. Every time I see a rare deck go extremely high on eBay I imagine it is Jackson using the funds from these projects I back to outbid me and take my vintage treasures. No, I really do think that. I guess I need to get out more.

Hey I'm liking the cards! I went over there and backed at the early bird level, but there is something I noticed. An early bird backer can get a deck at $10, but most card junkies buy at least 2 at a time. Further down there is a level at which a backer can get 2 decks for $22 which is essentially what I would get if I backed at the early bird rate and added on an extra deck therefore negating the early bird discount.  I guess what I'm saying is that the early bird deck rewards those who would back the project at a cheaper level as opposed to the backers who would enter at a higher level and bring you more money. Anyway, just a note. I really like the design and good luck.

Today I received my limited edition Civil War decks and they are phenomenal. They fit perfectly with the independence series decks that arrived last week. I was a fan of the Kings Wild products when I first laid eyes on the federal 52 series, but these recent decks really appeal to me. The war themes add extra depth to an already superior product while the foil and embossing elements compliment the tuck box art style perfectly. Really great job!

You have my support! I especially like the colors and style of the standard deck and need at least a couple. I guess I just missed the first time around probably because of moving.

I gushed so much about the tuck boxes that I completely forgot to talk about the cards themselves. The smooth finish feels like butter in your hands and the non textured surface makes the fine details of the artwork really pop. Also this is what my laptop looks like now.

Received my limited and standard decks today! I'm really happy with the results. Above all I was most looking forward to breaking open the limiteds and seeing the unique tuckcase which did not disappoint. I despise seals and only had one to get through In order to get past the wax paper wrapping behind the signed band. So I broke out my razor blade and carefully removed the sticker to get at the deck itself. The only drawback was a little bit on an off centered punch on the foil embossing on my crown deck which is not really too noticible. Honestly it was a fulfilling experience. My biggest pet peave about seals is the residue they leave behind on the tuck no matter how carefully they are removed. Not having to mar the box made my day and in the end I resealed the deck quite easily. Minimal seals and no cellophane on the limited decks means a win in my book! Great job kings wild!

A deck of Congress cards I acquired a few weeks back. Early 1900s called spinning wheel. The back design is not really my cup of tea, but I am happy about that Ace of Spades! Notice the way I took the photos all angled and and artsy.

Not jumping in to the speculation part of it, but the idea of Texas War of Independence series would be nothing short of an ambitious and epic project. Super cool idea!

Design & Development / Re: Pounders - a Founders deck parody
« on: July 18, 2014, 07:04:35 PM »
I think it is best to just leave it alone. Most of your projects eclipse what they were trying to create in the first place. I think backers of that deck would probably be looking more forward to your next original project than rehashing the Founders deck. I did not back the deck myself; it was before my time, but I don't think backing another version of the deck they already payed for is going to wipe the bad taste out of anyones mouth.

Great haul is right. These are all neat and collectable decks. I like the Elks and don't see it hardly ever. There are lots of neat RR decks and it is a great area to collect. Competitive because of all the RR general collectors.

I almost let the Elks deck slide before going ahead and purchasing it. I had never seen it before and could not find any internet information on it. I finally ran across an original newspaper article from 1933 referencing the tournament itself and decided to get them because they were so unique and I wasn't sure to see them again. The $10 investment did not disappoint! the AOS code matches up, and the cards are virtually unplayed. Very clean box and cards which I am glad to have.

Great haul.  I love how NorthWestern Rail managed to get a bikini-clad girl onto the back of a railroad-themed deck!

No kidding. Way to go Chicago NW! All kidding aside, whoever conceptualized the decks for Chicago Northwestern back in the day did a stellar job. Wheras most other railroad decks focus on the train itself, theirs seem to highlight the dynamics of the people in the scene as they acknowledge the train rolling by. Really neat decks. My favorite (which I haven't acquired yet) is a scene of a man and two boys in a workshop watching the train go by in the distance. Little slices of Americana which are really well done.

I have not posted a lot lately, but I have been acquiring some decks over the last few months that I am very proud of and want to share here.  From the start I have wanted a focus of my collection to be railroad decks and I have made some good headway in that direction. Pictures below are several southern pacific decks (I am trying to pick up all the scenic backs), a Union Pacific, a Louisville & Nashville route, and 2 Chicago northwestern decks. After that I have a National Card Company Full House Poker Deck from the late 1800s, and a couple of classic sealed bridge decks. Now I come to my favorites I've acquired recently. I am trying to pick up some USPCC decks with unique jokers and ever since I originally saw the bird dog ace in the Hochman guide I have wanted it; so I picked up a really clean Sportsman's deck and marked it off my list. After that I have jumbo Slipcased deck with a waterfall joker which I really like. Finally I found a really unique deck from the national Elks bridge tournament during the thirties which is very clean and slick; I live the purple color. So if you want to ask about any of them or have anything to say about them then post away!
