Playing Card Plethora / Re: Artifice and Arcane deck list question
« on: June 15, 2016, 05:12:37 PM »
The two initial Artifice decks were the red and blue Artifice, both borderless. After that there were a 2nd edition of the blue Artifice printed, this one is the current one with a white border. The emerald Artifice has the same border and was released as a "v2" but there was never more than one version of it. After that we have the purple Artifice with the purple pips and the second print run of it that had the pips changed (although these were never separated as different editions). Add to that the black, white and gold Artifice and I think we have listed them all.

For the Arcanes, there were the white and black from the start, and the gold Arcane as the limited version. A while back they released the red Arcane and that should be all of the Arcanes. The gold Arcanes are printed with performance coating/magic finish but were not marked as such (the first deck to be released with that finish). The regular editions have been printed with both regular air-cushion finish and with performance coating but not separated as different editions. I believe the box art might have had the wording changed perhaps, but don't take my word for it as my memory is getting foggier with each passing year.

I'm sure I'm not the first to notice it, but misspelling the only name on a deck themed upon that very person('s book) is unfortunate to say the least.

3
I'll check in with them and see, it was either a switch from matte to glossy or the other way around, so if yours is glossy the 2nd ed should be matte unless they decided against it.

4
I don't own them myself, but from recollection the difference was in the tuck case. I believe the first edition was matte and the second was blank. Although that was when still in pre-production, so might've been changed.

Hi Aaron,

Still waiting to hear back from you regarding our pm conversation.  :)

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Black Lions Playing Card Seconds?
« on: March 07, 2016, 04:49:12 PM »
Blaine posting something on instagram/twitter (and even writing "soon" or similar) doesn't necessarily mean it'll actually be released very soon. Someone else will remember this better than me, but the Silver Split Spades were teased for a few months before released, and I seem to recall the same for both the Gatorbacks and the Black Lions series (albeit not as many months ahead of time).

They'll be released sooner or later, but there's no telling when until Blaine posts an actual date.

Just a quick heads-up - the pledge levels will be in Canadian dollars so you know (in other words the price is less expensive than it may at first look). Easy to miss when rushing to a pledge.

Hey guys,

Looking for the book "If An Octopus Could Palm". (I suspect a few people picked it up for the sole purpose of getting the playing cards that came with.)

Minimum offer is kind of weird to write but $10 and up - we can discuss the price. Quantity depends on the price I can get, I wouldn't mind having a few to give to close friends as I enjoy the somewhat ridiculous level of sleight of hand it contains. Shipping would be within USA.

Marcus, were the decks offered part of the serial-numbered set or were they unnumbered?  How many did he sell?  I ask only out of curiosity - in many ways, it represents a subset of a special limited edition.

These decks were part of the 500 numbered decks, so the only thing separating them from the others is Jackson's signature as far as I know. That, and the unicorn dust. (Less than 50 decks were sold through Kings Wild.)

11
Hey guys,

The decks that were sold through Kings Wild yesterday were Jackson's very limited personal stock that he received as payment for designing the deck. They were priced at $45 + shipping just as they are through the club.

It's always the way - I wanted two limited edition decks, but no rewards remain for two limited edition decks, despite 156 of them still being available as individual decks...  Marcus, any help here?

We'll look over the tiers later today and will most likely be turning some of the 1x tiers into 2x tiers.

After having focused on a few other projects in between, it's high time for the Crazy 8's.

From the Kings Wild Facebook page:
"Crazy 8's Playing cards live on Kickstarter Saturday January 16th at 12:00pm central time."

Holy crap on a cracker, y'all.  Look what was included in my latest order from Legends!  *happy dance*

Very sweet!

I knew of one seller that was using a once-popular deck as padding to protect more valuable decks from damage in shipping!  The deck was a hit with cardists for about five minutes, when they discovered that they wear out way too quickly...  I can't remember the name but it was the one in the black and gold box with a black and gold, one-way back pattern that had pips in it...  If you can find them these days, they typically sell for about the same as a pack of Rider Backs.

Heh, must be the Massa decks with that description. They had a very distinctive smell to them as well.

Not counting the red Gatorbacks (which were teased as a very limited deck even before the release), Blaine's decks have been large print-runs so far. Shouldn't be a problem to get your hands on a few.

...and the White Lions Series A Red...
...and the White Lions "Rainbow Edition" purple...
...and the White Lions "Rainbow Edition" UV blue.

He's had a good number of limited print runs.  And this doesn't count the prototype Bicycle Split Spades magic decks, or the unreleased David Blaine "Microsoft" decks...

While I can't say you're wrong, I can't say I agree with all of that either. The Series A Red wasn't exactly hard to get, from what I remember it was easier than the green Gatorbacks even. I had a chance to get them and changed my mind quite a few times before deciding. The Rainbow editions were not a separate print-run, they were just the result of switching colors without cleaning the plates during the print so those aren't exactly comparable here. (Edit: A friend pointed out that the UV and the red Rainbow decks were indeed separate print-runs. Mea culpa.) The Microsoft deck has never even been released and was not meant to either, so that hardly works to compare with either.

Add to that, when Blaine teased the red gatorbacks he was very clear about how limited they were. Nothing like that has been said for these so far. These might sell out day one, but I doubt it'll be that hard to get some if you are around for the launch.

(However, I've grown to learn that you and I rarely see things from the same perspective, so I fully expect a response along those lines yet again.  ;) )

I'm about to really shoot myself in the foot here, but I don't consider this a recolor.  :mindf-ck:

And this is why it makes sense to use the definitions Don and I have presented, because they don't involve any arbitrary decisions. If any design element has been changed, it's always a redesign. If the color is the only thing that has been changed, it's a recolor. There's no grey zone and no room for confusion.

Haha, well there was a front to the t-shirt too, Fes. Let's show them that one too.

Quote
Its been almost 2 years in the making, but after much negotiation and patience, The United States Playing Card Company has finally awarded me one of the only official apparel licenses in the world. With this opportunity I will get to create officially licensed apparel using the treasure trove of artwork and designs that USPCC has gathered over a hundred years of designing some of the most beautiful playing cards in the world.

I happy to use the Black Diamond Tally Ho project to release the inaugural T-shirt design of what I am calling the Kings Wild Legacy Series. You will be able to pledge for or add on a Kings Wild Black Diamond Tally Ho shirt for a Kickstarter exclusive price during the campaign. The grey color shirt will be exclusive to this Kickstarter, so you will have something special.

The shirts will be printed on high quality stock with the official Kings Wild hem tag on the bottom of the shirts.

Shirts will come in the following sizes S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL

If you would like to add on a T-Shirt simply add $25 to your current pledge.

3XL are available for $30

I have also included a taste of the other shirts to come in the new Kings Wild Legacy Series. The shirts are not available during this project but will be at a later date.

And the other teaser pic (for what's to come in the future)

I'm glad I managed to get in on this before it sold out. The top tiers were sold out within seconds as expected, but there was over an hour before it sold out completely so it wasn't like it was an impossible task grabbing a tier if you were there for the launch.

Looking forward to seeing these arrive eventually - first custom design sporting the metalluxe. ;D

It doesn't really matter if one considers two designs to be "virtually identical" or not - if the design has been altered it is a redesign (or if created from scratch - a new design). In some cases, such as the one mentioned above where the edges of an F has been altered, you may consider it a lazy or hardly existent redesign, but it is still a redesign because the design has been changed. If the color is the only thing changed, it is a recolor.

This is really about as debatable as if our planet is round or not.

23
The whole word "recolor" kind of gives it away, doesn't it? Recolor means to change the color. If the design is changed, it's a redesign. And with that said, I must agree with Paul here - it's more of a familial resemblance. The decks, after all, make up a series and that usually means that they have some kind of theme or design elements in common.

Compare the designs inch by inch and write down all parts where they are identical and where they aren't. I'm quite positive you'd end up with a very short list of identical parts compared to the other, and if that's the case you can't really make the argument that it's merely a recolor.

These took a bit longer than planned, but it's looking like a release will be here at the end of August. Over the last year the deck has gone through some slight changes as well. I don't know about you guys, but I really like the design and color choice here.
