As most of you know, I perform at a hospital in Brooklyn, NY once a week in the pediatric unit.  Most of the kids love to see me and get a big kick out of the tricks I perform for them.  My usual routine is that I'll use a brand new, uncanceled casino deck out of a lot of eighteen bricks that I picked up really cheap on eBay, perform a few tricks with it, maybe one or two more with "special" decks (heh heh heh) and leave the child with the just-opened deck not only as a souvenir but to occupy their time when TV just isn't enough (or more accurately, is a bit too much)!

On average, I go through about a half-brick per session.  I did some counting recently and noticed I'm down to about my last three-and-a-half bricks, which means that I'll probably run out of cards by the end of May.  I'm loathe to end the tradition, since the kids really seem to appreciate it.

I discussed this with my fiancee, and bless her, she thinks I should just go ahead and buy the decks for the kids.  I thought about getting Streamlines from WalMart for $1 a deck, but noticed that if I buy in bulk from Kardwell (quantities by the gross), I can get them for even less than a buck a pack.  They aren't as cheap as the Gemaco decks I was giving away (I got those for less than 50 cents a pack), but they're also of much better quality.  While the jokers aren't 100% identical, they're close enough to each other than I can get away with using them in certain tricks that require two identical jokers.

Money's a little on the tight side in my household right now, especially since I'm saving up to get married in Florida in August.  I could probably swing getting a gross on my own in a few weeks, but I thought that perhaps some of you here might be interested in kicking in for some decks as well.

If you want to donate in any amount you can, PM me and I'll give you my PayPal email address.  In exchange for your donation, I'll do something I think is rather special, something I did when Jason Brumbalow at Ellusionist sent me some decks to give away at the holidays.  When I hand out a deck purchased with your money, I'll tell the child receiving it that this deck was from my friend, and I'll give them your name, and that this friend wanted me to give you this deck as a personal get-well gift.

I plan to place my order before the middle of May so I'll have them in time before I run out.  If enough people donate, I'll go ahead and plan to buy another gross (and another, and another, etc.) until the date I go ahead to make the purchase.  The website states the price for one gross (144 decks) at $139.00 plus shipping and state sales tax, and two gross (288 decks) at a ten-dollar discount, $268.00 plus shipping and tax.  I'll try to contact the company, explain what the decks are for, and perhaps even negotiate a cheaper price (they sell wholesale as well as retail, so maybe they'd be willing to give me the wholesaler's price).

If you can't afford to donate, please, DON'T.  I'm planning to buy decks one way or another and I don't want people going broke on this - your encouraging words will be enough.  I simply thought that some people here would like to take advantage of the opportunity to help me make a little boy or girl's day a little brighter, and with enough help, make my purchase stretch even further and cheer up more sick kids.

All right, I've said enough.  I'm practically blushing saying this much - I shouldn't be embarrassed to ask for your help like this, but I am, a little.  Thanks for your time, and have a peaceful and pleasant day.

PS: if you happen to spot an even better deal on decks in bulk of at least the same quality as Streamlines, please don't keep it a secret!  I'd love to make this purchase last for as far as I can make it go.

People say nothing's impossible, but I do nothing everyday.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

Hey Don, I'll ship a few bricks your way when I get the chance. Email me your address.

I'll PM you, but make sure the shipping won't be too high.  I'm going to contact Kardwell about an in-person pickup since they're on Long Island.  Less spent on shipping, more spent on decks!

No need for expensive or rare decks - it's why I decided on Streamlines.  But if you do ship me something a little special for them, I'll be sure they know who it's from!

I will see what I can do, if I get some money it wont be much it will be some.

Hey Don, Would like to donate some money, any minimum donation?

Donate only what you can afford, even if it's just a couple of bucks.

Everyone - thanks for this show of support, I really appreciate it.  I know the kids will love it!

The moment I saw deck seals that imitate the USPC seal and the shipping box that read "made in China", I knew this wouldn't be a worthwhile deck.  I think getting the Streamlines for just under a buck a box is better, and I do plan on approaching the company about getting a small discount or maybe some donated cards.  I'll contact Kardwell at the end of the month to see about those details, make arrangements for the purchase and try to work out an in-person pick-up to save on shipping charges.  I plan to buy the decks no later than mid-May.

If this drive goes as well as it is so far, I may have a good supply to last for a number of months!  That would be awesome, gang!  Soon, once I've accumulated a few donations, I'm going to keep a running total here, with donors names left out for their own privacy.  If you wish to post what you've donated, that's entirely up to you.  For now, I'm going to aim for getting two gross, but if I can get more, I'd be the last person to turn it down.

I'm sure it is, but those decks weren't Full Tilt Poker decks.  They were some generic brand I never heard of.  FTP is out of business now, anyway; Federal agents shut down a lot of those online gaming companies some months ago and seized their assets.  The domain name is now the property of the FBI.

Good for you. I do a similar thing that you do. I volunteer at several local hospitals. I did the pediatrics units for some time but I decided to make a change and now perform only in the psych. units. Not only because that is the type of work I do but I also find psych units get very little in the way of magicians or others comming in. I am in the same boat as you going through cards but I found a local store that runs big sales on bikes (two packs for 2.50) Once a month or so. I have given out some nice cards to a few patients but for the most part, everyone seems happy with the bikes. Psych units are a great place to perform in as these patients really appreciate people taking the time to spend time with them. There is an added demension of difficulty due to privacy laws but each psych unit has a way of dealing with such issues. I do not usually like to talk about this as I have one of those "when you do a good thing do not let the right hand know what the lefthand is doing" but since you brought it up I figured what the hell. P.S. I am not plugging or asking anyone for any free decks, I just wanted to remind people that people in psych wards appreciate visits also.

A psych unit nurse actually asked me to help out and entertain there, but my program director forbade it.  They've had issues with their psych patients in the past, and they're not too keen on exposing them to a performer whose specialty is altering one's sense of reality by doing things that aren't supposed to be possible...

UPDATE - BIG UPDATE - EVERYONE LOOK - THANK YOU!  UPDATE - BIG UPDATE - EVERYONE LOOK - THANK YOU!
For those who didn't know, my hospital name is New York Methodist Hospital, and I'm part of the Sparks of Life Program.  I mentioned what I'm doing here to my program director and she was completely thrilled, especially since I am in no way required to give the kids anything when I perform for them.

She was so happy about the upcoming purchase that she's not only sending me a sales tax exemption form for tax-free purchases (usually used for schools and charitable organizations like this hospital), but she's also going to write a letter of support to Kardwell about the upcoming purchase, in the hopes that they may offer a discount, free decks or possibly both!  This means any cash you donate will go further than originally planned!

So far, I've received some interest from individuals, actual donations of $35 and a commitment from Alex to send a few bricks of cards for the cause.  I don't require you to send cards, since sending cash for the card purchase will probably go further, but if that's what you desire, I'd be the last person to stop you - I'll give you a mailing address for that purpose if you wish to do so.

Just to remind everyone:

If you send decks, I will sticky-label every deck you send with your name on it.
If you send cash, I will sticky-label one deck for every dollar you send.

When I open decks for the kids and perform, I'll tell them that you, my personal friend, gave me that deck in order to give to him or her, and that they wanted you to enjoy the cards and to feel better while they're recuperating.  So a kid sitting in a hospital bed in Brooklyn will be thinking some very nice thoughts about that stranger, that friend of the magician, who wanted them to be happier and get well sooner.  If you wish to donate using a handle or in the name of another person, let me know and I'll be happy to accommodate your requests.

Honestly, you would be amazed at some of the reactions I get from the kids when I do things like this for them.  Their eyes light up, they're dumbfounded, they're thrilled - and most importantly, they're happy and have forgotten for at least a moment about their personal suffering.  That right there is some very powerful medicine, and I want as many of you as can do so to share in that magical cure for sadness with me.

Yes, this is the part of the plea that a bump - DONATE!  If all you can afford is a buck, I'll take it.  If you can't afford a buck, then encouraging words are always welcome, as well as getting the word out to others who may be willing and able to donate.

Thanks again, everyone, for your time.

Anyone who truly can't for either financial, logistical or political reasons, shouldn't.  It's cool!  But you can spread the word and get others to kick in.

I am sorry to hear your director does not favor you guys performing in Psych units. In many cases, people who end up private hospital in-patient psych stays are ussually in crisis mode, dealing with chronic mental illness or an acute case of some type but I have never had a problem when I have volunteered at a psych unit. I should say I have worked in the mental health feild for many years. We have a lot of problems getting people to volunteer due to their perceptions of the population. Still, I am not downing you, I am big on all charity. That is why in my volunteer work, I now limit it to psych work.

I never got the details on the whys and wherefores (and have in intention of asking), but the gist I got was that something bad happened once to someone that was volunteering in the unit from my program.  The program is really just "comfort" volunteers, not medically or psychiatrically trained - anything goes on medically, we call the duty nurse, and everything that happens there is protected by HIPAA laws.  It's likely the same reason why I'm not permitted to entertain in the ICU that's in the pediatric unit, or in any rooms with posted contact protocols beyond the norm of "sanitize between visits" - it's meant to protect us as much as the patient and the rest of the hospital, physically as well as legally.  And it's not really a private setting - I think the hospital is a public institution, or at the minimum it does operate on a charitable basis to some degree.  If it didn't, I wouldn't be able to get tax-exempt status for the purchase of these playing cards.

I'm going to take this into the wider world and post my campaign on my FB page as well.  Cross your fingers, folks!  If you can't donate, spread the word, please!

Everyone, thank you for those who've showed support so far.  I'm closing this on the morning of Monday, May 7th, at which time I'll be placing the order.  There's still time if you want to help, and I'll accept even the smallest amount of support.  One buck means one deck, so as long as you have PayPal, you can help!

I'm going to post the "unboxing" photos and perhaps even something at the hospital if I can work out an appropriate way to do so with my program's administrator.
