Design & Development / My 12 Month Project - True Royalty Deck
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:31:34 PM »
I've been working for several months with one of my favorite artists, Joe Dragunas, who has unwittingly sold me his soul in the form of time to develop a new deck I'm calling True Royalty.  We are depicting four kingdoms of the 17th century and portraying period style design and actual rulers of the period.  This is no small project as the artwork is intense and detailed and 100% by hand (no computer work or tracing here).  While I love short project timelines, there is no joke that the design of these cards will take up to 12 months.  So don't hold your breath. :)

Design & Development / After Market sales for Deck Designers
« on: August 05, 2013, 11:47:57 AM »
When the KS project ends and you have in hand an extra few hundred decks of cards the first question is: How can I turn this into cash?  The simplest and most effective way (and least profitable) is to find distributors who will consign or outright buy your excess...mind you, for pennies on the dollar.  Another way is to sell them on Etsy which has a reasonable find and search buying group, but don't expect to sell a lot.  You can sell it on Amazon, but then you need to have keywords or related links that will make your stuff more visible.  Or.... and here is my advice and my point to all this:  Make the circuits where your buyers are.

I attended ComicCon for the first time this year (yay me) and guess what.... no playing cards!
I just spent this past week at the World Board Gaming Championships filled with guess who... consumers who will think nothing about spending $70 on a board game and NEED playing cards to fill the time between heats.  Guess how many deck designers were represented?  Just one.  Bent Castle from Rochester had three decks and two card games represented through a gaming distributor (I bought one of their decks).  Meanwhile, over 300 board games were represented.

My point... the newer art and comic based decks have buyers who DO NOT (I sat through a two hour seminar to learn this) use Kickstarter.  I talked to over a hundred people about crowdfunding and kickstarter and it was as foreign as scrapple is to a Californian.

I have five events next year that I am signing up for to sell games and decks.  I don't mind healthy competition.  I think it may actually help sales!

Please post here if you have other creative ideas on how to sell your "extra" decks.

By Larry Sanders.  1st Created.  $17K Goal.  Unusual early birds, ultimate deck cost $10.  Lots and lots and lots of art to buy...and decks of cards too...but mostly art.
This is art (in case you were wondering - it took me a while too).

Design & Development / Zombie Origin Redesign for USPCC
« on: July 02, 2013, 08:02:24 AM »
As I've grown a little older and a little wiser, I realize that my first deck while well received did not have the design elements nor the branding that USPCC can provide to help legitimize the deck.  So I took a trip back to the drawing board and began making some serious changes.  First, the court cards.  Originally these were the same on both ends, however as a board gamer I learned quickly that I'd be able to create more games if I could reverse the cards making them pre- and post- zombie.  It's not a new concept, but I like to give this deck as much flexibility as possible.

First Change:

Courts - Changes in fonts and alignment as well as pre- and post- zombie images

This is the second summer my Intern has been on staff with me and she does great work for such a young person.  She also helps me with insight of a younger buying market.  Last year we focused on publishing, editing and distribution as related to my primary business.  This year I wanted to introduce her to KickStarter and more specifically the gaming and playing card development that our company has been exploring.

Her job - Attempt to gather information about KS projects, seek out public opinion through forums and blogs and attempt to identify elements to what makes some KS projects Successful/UnSuccessful/and Extremely Successful.  Because we are in the business of Distribution and Marketing we have some insight as to how the community learns of projects either through social networking, direct marketing or fanbase.  This year when Dean Koontz published Forever Odd, 200,000 adoring Odd Thomas fans purchased their copies on day 1. (myself included).

I will attempt to post findings/spreadsheets/evaluations in this thread.  Just one time in the current search for KS projects.  Hopefully it will help some designers and start up card makers.  If nothing else, it's keeping the Intern busy for a few weeks. :)  I should watch what I say as she is monitoring this site as well as others for information on playing cards.

Playing Card Plethora / A Victorian Adventure - USPCC (KS)
« on: May 30, 2013, 04:00:52 PM »
The last of my independant decks.  From this point forward all my deck design will be done through my game company, Man Made Games.  Up to this point the art and design have been my own, moving forward I will be joined by some talented individuals to release even more exciting decks.  For now, check it out:

How much kitsch is too much kitsch?  I expect to see extra deck discounts, uncut sheets and maybe even dice... but it seems that more and more, and even the more popular decks, offer boxes, chips, mustache shaped card benders and TShirts... It seems that the more creative the add-on the more likely people will want it, but I don't really see how it contributes to the production of a deck?

Round numbers, I expect to spend around $8,500 to have a deck made and mailed with about 1,500 extra decks to sell free and clear.  So i set my goal at $8,500.  If I want to add TShirts, and i charge $25 and it costs me $15, that means that $10 goes toward the goal.  Woohoo...but no.  I need $8,500 pledged to produce decks (discounting non payers, taxes, KS and Amazon Fees, production, shipping, packaging...)  So now, I will only get $8,485 toward paying for the production of the deck.

So do I throw out a number like $10,000 so i can include add-ons and not cut my ability to earn enough to pay for deck production, or do I only offer decks and full sheets and risk not offering cool stuff that people want?

First, I already know which direction I'm going and how to do it properly, but I often wonder at the rest who aren't thinking ahead or are betting that they will sell some of their overstock during the project to make up for the lost revenue being applied toward the production goal.

Design & Development / 4 Jokers - Designers Wanted
« on: May 03, 2013, 03:35:56 PM »
I was pushing together a deck for a game I call 4 Jokers.  The game play isn't as smooth as i'd like and I am finding very little interest in card games themselves.  It seems the comic book and specialty gaming stores are more interested in collector cards (yawn).  One guy looked over the game and said, "I love the jokers, do you have a set of those?"  Um... I have 4.  But then I had an idea, and before I get too far down the road on my own, I thought it would be fitting to call the deck 'Four Jokers' and have it be an all 'Joker' deck in keeping with a carnival type theme perhaps.  And each suit would represent a different type of Joker:
Classic/Vintage, Risque, Dark/Sinister, Comical/Romantic.  Now, it doesn't make sense for one joker to design the entire deck, so I wondered if any designers would be interested in collaborating and volunteering to be one of the other 'Jokers' (4 Joker Types, 4 Suits, 4 Creators).  I don't want to give too much away, but I have.  So I'm taking names, who's game?

The Conversation Parlor / Banned Permanently from UC
« on: April 30, 2013, 08:26:47 AM »
Having seen so many posts about United Cardists, last week i finally decided to pay their site a visit.  I registered, set up a profile and read a few posts.  I read the instructions for new members and so i posted an introduction message (the same that I posted here because I am lazy and didn't want to retype the whole thing).  It went for approval because as a newbie I can't be trusted not to post hate messages.  No skin off my nose, I was just curious what other forums had to say.

Two days later I got a notice that they would not publish my 'introduction' post because it was off topic?  I introduced myself, told people the general area where I live, that I like playing cards... the normal blah blah stuff right?  So that is off topic.

Today I tried to follow a link to see what UC had to say on the matter and was hit with a wall that said I was permanently banned.  No emails, no reason, no excuse!!  The only thing I can say is that on my current kickstarter promotion I had mentioned that The Discourse was a great forum for card collectors and designers (as well as magicians).

Has anyone else been banned from UC?  Should I have a complex, does my pariah reputation proceed me?

Design & Development / Trending Themes
« on: April 26, 2013, 09:39:14 AM »
It would be interesting to see the trending themes for decks to understand the market saturation, and to get a thumb on the forecast for new designs.  In the textile industry they talk about the new colors of the season.  This summer we will be trending in light aquas and pansy pinks... whatever that means.

You can easily look at the most recent launches and see that Lovecraft, Steampunk, and Zombies have made huge numbers in their themes, but as been said here many times, they are all a bit overdone.  So as these themes begin to ebb, what are the next themes?  I know everyone wants to know that so they can start designing.  Normally trends come from the movies that are being released, so when pirate movies are popular, pirate cards are popular.

I'd like to see a line graph based on major themes to see how they trend.  I don't have enough back data to do it justice.  While I understand that unique 'one of a kind because no one has ever thought of it before' decks are the best to design, but the problem is that those ideas typically only come along once in a lifetime.  The rest of the time, you have to cater to the wants of the masses.

By the way I'm still playing with the idea of Cheese's of the World where different types of cheese would be carved into the shape of Jesus.  I kid... or do I? :P

Design & Development / Bicycle Adventure Deck
« on: April 24, 2013, 03:35:17 PM »
I cringe to call this a Steampunk deck, however the time period is Victorian and relates to Sci-Fi of the day to include inspirations from Stories Like 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, Around the World in 80 days.... We are well into the court cards and are just starting design on the pips and standard cards.  So don't give me grief about how things are not proportioned or lined up correctly, I already know that.  I'm more interested in the feel of the cards and the attraction to them.

Introduce Yourself / Amish Mafia in the House
« on: March 26, 2013, 09:37:52 PM »
Okay, I'm neither Amish or in the mafia.  I do however live in Lancaster PA on a farm where all my neighbors are Amish or Menonite.  My commute too work every morning requires driving around and passing buggies.  I am a collector and creator.  I enjoy outstanding artwork on playing cards and interesting subject matter.  I look forward to getting feedback from projects I've been working on and appreciate constructive criticism.

Thanks

Design & Development / "Magic Ink" Decks
« on: March 26, 2013, 09:34:46 AM »
I like the idea of using overlaying 'magic ink' on decks to give an additional dimension under black light, but is there a drawback to the process?  Does the ink over time lose it's magic?  Does wear on the card cause the images to lose luster?  I like to play with my cards and I have too many decks to keep duplicates for 'show', but I'm very interested in this type of technology and I'm thinking about using it in a future design.  Thoughts?  Impressions?  Likes or hates?
