I'm a speaker this year- is anyone from here going, as well? (I'll be talking about how to memorize the order of a shuffled deck of cards in under a minute. Fun!)

He just posted that he is fine. I am sure he will talk with them and that Ellusionist will send out an apology, saying it was not meant to be taken that way.

and this is taken from the description when you go to buy them.

Shortly after Jamie began production on these bottles, he was forced to stop work due to an injury to his hands. As such, less than 50 of each of these bottles have been produced. When we spoke to Jamie recently he confirmed that he has now bounced back 110% after his surgery and is feeling better than he has in 10 years.

Somewhere between the Ellusionist story and Jamie's story is the truth. No one is ever 100% after needing surgery. 98% sure. Sounds like Jamie is being over optimistic. This is his livelihood after all and is going to be very protective of it.

Sorry, I missed this one! I keep forgetting that my story might not be well known here as in other places, too. So for those that don't know, I'm also a full time paramedic. I have seen trauma that not many people can even imagine. So some wrist pain/discomfort is absolute nothing in the grand scheme of things. Like, zero; nothing. So when I can come out of surgery (that isn't required to save my life) and the pain is gone. Yup, that's a 110% success. Not being protective about anything- just being my usual positive self!

Heya Gang!

It's been too long since I've come by here- I need to change that!

And thank you all SO MUCH for the kind words and messages regarding my surgery! I would be lying if I said I wasn't terrified- but I'm pretty much back to full health and luckily my art hasn't been affected!!

I used to be a semi-pro bike racer so I've been riding a bike pretty much every day for twenty years. That, combined with getting older, putting decks into bottles all the time, tuning Industrial Revelations, working out, and Crossfitting, etc, just kind of wore my wrist out. I went it with some chronic pain and the doc said, "You know, we can fix that."

So in October, they did what's called a "scope". They go into your wrist with a camera and make sure there's no arthritis and to see what's what. They saw that I tore my SL ligament- but that it was repairable. So in November, I went in for full surgery! Basically, they took a piece of tendon from my forearm and then inserted it into my wrist. They drilled through 3 bones in my wrist and tied that piece of tendon around them. It tightened everything right up. Madness. When I went in for my custom cast, they castmaker asked what I had done. When I explained, he replied, "Ah. Fancy surgery." And you know what? He's right. It IS fancy surgery. And I am SO LUCKY to be a Canadian. In other countries, I'm sure they never would have even considered doing anything. And it doesn't cost me a cent. Unbelievable.

And now here we are 4 months later! I'm just now starting to feel great and have been making bottles again. Hurrah! I have to say, though, that these Madison ones are amazing. There's something about having his signature on them that makes me feel like a piece of him is in my home at all times. Haha. It sounds weird, but it's true. I look at AIPs like friends- and Madison is an awesome one.

I also know that there's always some talk about the price tags, too. And I promise you that I'm not buying a mansion on the hill or anything, lol. They take hours- and when you factor that in- with everything else, I think they're priced fairly. I know I spend hundreds on art that I love- especially if I know I'm going to keep it for years and years (my favourite is my Ricky Jay poster that I had framed. Holy smokes, now THAT was expensive, lol).

I guess that's about it! I'm definitely going to try and contribute here more! And, please, treat me like an open book! I'm the most honest guy you'll ever meet- so if you have a question about anything, don't be afraid to ask. Except for "how I make the bottles", lol. I've heard that about a million times by now. But anything else- if I can help you, I will.

Your pal,

jamie

A great way to perform is to have people ask for it. And, for the most part, it's not as hard as it sounds. My approach (about  dozen years ago) was to start performing one trick all day on Friday. Basically, I would approach friends and people at work and simply say, "Hey gang, I'm starting a new thing where I perform a single magic trick, only one, on Fridays. Do you want to see it?" After a month, everyone I knew was reminding me on Thursdays to be ready for tomorrow because they couldn't wait to see Magic Friday. And I still perform Magic Friday to this day!

Having people ask you to show their friends a trick (that you've already shown them) is one of the greatest compliments you can receive. And, for a lot of people, they ask because they want reinforcement that they're not "stupid". They want their friends to be surprised as well, so that they're not the only ones that couldn't figure it out. So when people ask, you need to let them down lightly. My take is always the same:

Them: "Jamie! Show these guys the one where you made that elephant appear and juggle the shovels!"

Me: "No."

~laughter~

Me: "Seriously, no way. That was a special moment in time. It was a gift only for you. I'll show you guys something else, though."

Hope that makes sense,

jamie

Don't worry Don, he'll be sure to pop in next time he has some wares to sell...

Looking back at my posts, this is a valid comment. It's  a fine line between being excited about your creations and wanting to share them~ and being seen as a hustler trying to make a buck. Rest assured, I am not in this business to make moolah. I view myself as an artist and, when I make something that I think is worthy, I try to share it and, yes, sell it. But that is not why I'm here. I'm here to offer what I have to an awesome community that has a love for cards as much as I do. As a fellow artist. Be that as it may, your point is taken.

It's been mucho, mucho too long since I've been on here! But I've been absolutely buried in work. It feels good to be back among those that love cards as much as I do!

And you guys spoke, & I listened! Straight black and waaaaay lighter (it ways the exact same amount as 27 playing cards- pick up a pile and give it a test)...

The VAULT, now in BLACK ALUMINUM

http://magicfriday.blogspot.ca/2012/03/vault.html

As always, thanks for taking the time to look and comment. If it wasn't for you guys, people like myself would never get the chance to make things we love.

Your pal,

jamie

8
Hiya gang!

Did anyone from here pick one up? Your guys's (is that a word, lol) opinion matters a great deal!

9
Lol, you guys beat me to it!

The VAULT is now available!

I can't wait to hear what you guys think!

And I'm soooo sorry about the video, lol. You would think I would have something fancier by now!

10
Well, it's done!! Hurrah! Get ready for a lot of pictures, lol.

And, after the damask, we managed to give it a UV clear coat- and it worked wonderfully. The die is perfect and everything looks like we're ready to start production. As of now, I'm hoping for an official release of...

The Vault

Release: March.31.
Price: $48 + $7 shipping, anywhere in the world.

~every Vault will come in a small bag that looks like a Turkish rug, great to hold your quarter for your IR, or for display~

~with a red deck; the colours shine through the IR slots

~table hopping? leave your cards on display. Or have a prediction inside~

~with a blue deck; everything blends~

~stand tall with a thumb slot to pull cards out smoothly and easily; no forcing required (pun intended)~

~originally designed to help boxes holding IRs, it also adds another layer of mystery. Like the intricate boxes on stage~

~it also holds cards without the box; slightly beveled, beautifully displayed~

~one last shot of the back pattern~

~and the front~

I guess that's about it! Now to start making them! I'll probably start with 100 and see how we do. Thanks for reading everyone!

My best,

jamie

I'm here in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. If you ever come through, feel free to look me up~

My best,

jamie

12
I would love to.

I'm also getting closer to finishing the Vault. Here's a post I made on another forum:

Hurrah!

The die is made and is beautiful. Basically, it's almost impossible to make sharp corners by hand- you just can't get the pressure to make sharp bends, so a die has to be made. This is very expensive (I don't want to talk about it, lol), and takes a very gifted person to make it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool_and_die_maker

Luckily, I work with the best! As you can see from the picture below, the die makes a HUGE difference...

The top Vault was the design prototype that we made by bending it by hand. If you look closely, you can see that the box is held in by the corners- not a great design, as it'll scrape the corners of the box as it goes in and out:

The bottom one, however, is a Vault made with the die. The difference is unbelievable as you can see that the box is now held in by the flat of the box because the corners are now sharp! Hurrah!

Now I go back to the application of the Damask Pattern and make sure the application and clearcoat won't affect the brass (we have to apply the pattern by using over 200lbs of pressure). After that, I'll finalize the packaging and pricing and we should be good to go!

I hope you guys don't mind me posting about how all of this works. I thought it would be interesting to give you some insight into what actually happens when trying to create a product from start to finish. I can talk about design for days! There's probably 1 more month to go.

My best,

jamie

13
Thanks gang!

I'm getting closer! Totally excited.

14
Those are them! Great find (you guys are good, lol!)

I love them!!

As for how many Limited Edition AIP's I've done: yikes! So many personals ones! But for official release:

100 1800's
100 Red Artifice
44 Split Spades
100 White Lions
12 for De'Vo
3 for the Bucks (can't remember which deck, lol)
Sentinels
100 Banksy Themed "Send Wonder" decks
52 Signed "Send Wonder"
3 Ripley's
Gah, this could go on, lol. I'll stop boring you.

As for the Vault, here's an update I just posted:

Getting closer! The Damask pattern has been applied to the steel prototype. It'll look much better on the final brass, though. I'm also leaning towards a lighter brown print as it's a bit subtler...

I find it easier to notice with Face Cards. Take a bunch out and look at how they're centered on the card...

16
Hiya Gang!

Great thoughts, suggestions, and ideas regarding the Vault. I'm just getting the final exterior print finished up and am hoping it rocks! I won't be doing a bunch of different versions, though, just the brass with the design (which is a surprise) on the outside.

With regards to the 2 slits- they're actually there for 2 reasons. One is aesthetic: For some reason, I just like the look and it feels more like a Vault to me (like coins are going in, maybe, lol). The second is so that, if desired, you could perform a magic trick I invented, Industrial Revelation, while it's still inside:

Thanks again for all the kindness!

Your pal,

jamie

17
Thanks for the input! I absolutely love to hear everyone's thoughts and I respect them completely.

The gauge of brass I'm using is more than strong enough to protect the box. No worries there. As for the design- that will all come down to personal preference- and I appreciate yours! I love it, though. It just feels super smooth. Work with whatever inspires you, I reckon!

My best,

jamie

Yup. It was crazy.

But now when I look at facecards on any deck, I'm looking to see how well everything is centered...

Has anyone tried it yet? Pull out 4 face cards from any deck there is and see if you can tell which one is spun? Depending on the deck, I'm almost 9 out of 10 times.

visited Jamie's site, and ended up buying the industrial revelation.

then found out that Jamie is from Vancouver too! (I just graduated from UBC in 2011).

how awesome

That is so awesome, lol. Thank you so much! (I'm working on it this weekend, by the way).

And let me shout out a huge THANK YOU to all of you so far! You are one of the most welcoming gangs I've ever met/read. And, I'll be honest, it goes a looooooooong way to bringing people back. I hope I can offer you some insight along the way, as well.

On that note, I wonder what everyone here thinks of something I've been working on for a while? It's not finished yet (this is just the prototype/working model) but I'm getting close. I call it The VAULT, and it's a new style card guard/case...

Gotta run! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

My best,

jamie

I LOVE Montreal, as well. Man, what I would give for a good bagel right now, lol.

22
I wonder if it would be cool for us to leave out discussions on technique? After all, it's what makes the AIP bottle what it is. If so, that would be awesome~ thanks! (To be honest, that's what's kept me off of a few of the other boards. It goes from talking about art - which I could do all day- to just a dissection. Booo, lol. I know no one means any harm, but it seems that's what's happened in the past). That said, let me sign off on that subject by saying the glass is completely unaltered. I used to drink the chocolate milk myself, lol. Now I just buy them empty.

I know the ship in the bottles thing. I have a friend who does that as a hobby and not just ships, native nipa huts in a bottle as well. But cards? a deck that is still sealed? no matter how hard I think.... it still boggles me. **sigh** well I will not try to figure out how it is done. AIPs are beautiful and I don't want to spoil it for myself. I'm definitely getting myself 1 or 2 on my birthday! I'm so excited!

And this is exactly the kind of thinking that makes us all fellow artists. The joy in seeing each other's work with no other desire than what it's there for. To bring us happiness. I love it- thank you for that post.

_____________________________________________

To answer a few other questions- I do charge $150 for custom work- that's been my price forever and I keep it that way so it's fair to everyone. That said, I can't do any custom decks that I've already made Limited Editions of obviously.

I'll also see if I can take a picture of that Ripley deck. I love all things Ripley's and it wasn't easy to find!I actually have another one of the exact same deck framed on the wall going downstairs, on the right, but I don't think you can see it...

What about you guys- if you could only have one deck on your shelf, inside a bottle (so I guess handling wouldn't matter)- which would it be?

My best,

jamie

23
Lol, what a great question. I have no idea, lol! Let me go look...

There's maybe around thirty here? They drive my wife crazy. One of my favourites wasn't even made by me but was a gift from Danial Madison...

It was a sort of joke (because the glass is obviously broken and glued) but it means the world to me. Especially since the inscription reads, "Thanks for the inspiration."

What are some other good ones... How about this one I made for Bill Kalush and the CARC...

You can't see very well, but it has a copy of Erdnase on one side and a Green CARC deck on the backside with the glass case etched with the front page from Expert.

_____________________________________________

As for how many I've made- it's around a couple thousand now. And you know at the end of the day, I still love the original Blue Deck Bicycle AIP. They're the ones I leave on the street for the Send Wonder campaign and just have a certain feel that I'll always love. Always a sucker for the first, I reckon.

Gotta run!

~jamie

24
Ha, I wouldn't even be able to buy one ;)

I've actually tried Jerry's before but wasn't happy with how they turned out. And I was only willing to go through a dozen before throwing in the towel. Maybe I should revisit them, though.

My favourite deck, though, is in that bottle you see in the pic. It's a rare 1960's Ripley's Believe It Or Not deck. I've only seen less than a dozen in my life.

25
Wow, thanks for such an awesome welcome! It's exactly that kind of attitude that brings people back- you guys (and gals) are doing everything right!

And, just to show that I can represent the decks as much as the next guy, lol, here's a shot going downstairs into my office...

You guys are awesome,

jamie
