DEALT: The world's greatest card magician is blind

Quote
Inspiring documentary about one man’s relentless pursuit of his dream despite losing his vision.

Quote
Richard Turner’s colorful, often bizarre and always entertaining life is one a filmmaker could only dream to script, but this is not a story of fiction.

Tracing all the way back to Richard’s childhood as he struggled with losing his vision, to his discovery of magic and being mentored by Dai Vernon - known as "the only man to fool Houdini” - this film will explore Richard’s seemingly impossibly journey of overcoming obstacles and the relentless dedication it took to achieve his dream.

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

Richard Turner is one of the most revered men in the magic profession - an incredible talent who performs feats that sighted people would find nearly impossible.  There's a reason why USPC taps his expertise when they're devising new decks for the magic community.

I would be so completely behind this project - if it wasn't for the fact that the creators opted to use "flexible funding".

That's exactly why I'm hesitating as well. How will they solve things if they end up only crowdfunding a third of it, which is where they're at right now? I'll wait a bit more and see how this goes.
Yes, I might be the guy you remember from that thing at that place way back when.

Indiegogo states that the purpose behind flex funding is if any dollar amount will help you reach the project's objective and you can use flexible funding only if you can also supply the offered rewards with the funds you raise.

Still, the idea just doesn't sit well with me.  Why set a goal at all, if that's how flex funding works?  Just sit down on a street corner and hold out a card that reads "WILL WORK FOR MICROFUNDING".

Exactly. I prefer the regular crowdfunding version, because then if they reach it it is at least more likely to be completed the way it was planned out. If they don't reach it, they have to either give up or rework the idea so that they can lower the funding or get more pledges second time around. Flexible funding in general comes across as more of a "give us some money and we'll see what we can do with it" kind of scenario.

Actually, when I think of it, it really comes across as IGG thinks the backer cares more about the rewards than about the goals - more about the toy surprise, less about the box of cereal it's in.  But many projects, not the least of which a playing card project, could never genuinely use flex funding properly - you either raise the money to pay for printing, postage and packaging or you don't, cut and dried.  It's a fixed, mandatory amount, which no amount of fudging can change, short of decreasing the print order (which increases the per-deck costs, cutting into what little profit one might have had).  I suppose one could try making a documentary on less than a shoestring budget, but the thinner the string, the more likely it will break.

This looks amazing...

I was reading some of the rewards... There's lots of things that require Mr. Turners participation. A personal trick from Mr. Turner w/ no limits. A Skype session live with Mr. Turner w/ limit of 10. A private show for 15 in San Antonio. I know Richard is known for his work ethic and at one time working 2000+ consecutive days without taking a day off. These rewards are a lot of work.

I have not watched expose this week but I do follow theory11 on twitter. I see theory11 is supporting this cause with monarch decks. Very nice of them! I have not seen anything mentioned about this project by them?

Has EPCC or 52+JOKER ever made contact with Mr. Turner about appearing in NYC or at a 52+JOKER convention?

Richard Turner held a lecture at Tannen's in New York - pretty sure it was either this year or last year.  Tannen's and Fantasma Magic are the two companies you want to talk to about getting Richard Turner in New York.  They have magic seminars and lectures on an ongoing basis, sometimes with some big names in the field.

Must admit I reconsidered my stance on this project and have decided to support it despite the flexible funding part. Judging by the teaser they seem to be able to pull off quite a good documentary and considering how incredibly great Richard is with a deck of cards I want to help get this documentary produced. I've never seen anyone quite like him.

As much as I dislike flex funding, I can see how a documentary crew could somehow "make do" with less than what they planned for.  I might back it, I don't know yet.
