Hey Everyone,
I created this thread to show what I have created so far for an upcoming deck. Before I created the Galvanic deck, I've always wanted to see a true irish deck hit the market. Well I bring to you the Gaelic Edition. Now that the Galvanic designs are done and are now waiting to hit the press I decided I wanted to break away from that series for now and start fresh. This is the back design thus far and will be improving it as well as creating various other designs down the road. If I get enough positive feedback then by all means another Kickstarter will launch in the near future.

Thoughts on the back design so far?
Thanks!

It looks awesome, but you might want to check with USPC regarding that level of detail.  I'd hate to see that design look like mud when the print doesn't adequately capture the fineness of the work.

Consider using a smooth-textured stock.  Smooth paper would be easier to capture detail work on, I think, than a textured paper.  For a Bee deck, that would be Ivory Finish, or Magic, if you went for the upgrade.  Magic Finish on a smooth paper is actually a good combination - the Black and Silver Acorn Backs in Ivory are actually Magically Finished.

I love this back design. When I look at it from a distance, I automatically think of a field of clover with all of the swirls and depth. Looks like you're at a good start for another homerun  :)

I love the name, and I love that design. My imagination is making me think of different things: an underwater dome, a field of clovers covered in a fishing net etc. Can't wait!

I was going to say the same thing, too bright.  Try going to an almost BLACK with the gold weaving above it, it should make the gold weaving 'pop' off the card.

OMG I am so sorry to say this... but.... I have this mild phobia of swarm-ish things... like I want to scratch it and make it smooth. I can't even stare at the photo for too long without cringing and tearing up. I'm really sorry. I'm sure its a wonderful design but I have a hard time looking at it without feeling like they are moving creepy crawlies or insect eggs or worms. I'm dreadfully sorry. I really am. I did not mean any offense.

Well everyone has their own tastes and style preferences. So no need to tell yourself that you "must have no taste" ^-^ I'm sure a lot of people like this design. I just don't like it due to personal reasons sad to say.

I don't know... my posts have been downfamed 322 times, after all.  ;D

Sean, are you considering metallic inks for the gold weaving? In that case, darker inks might work better for the rest of the cards. I wonder if an Alps printer would do a good job printing a design like that. It can do gold metallic and gold foil, though the masking is critical to get it right.

He is irish and was trying to have a celtic theme to the cards.

I liked the previous update better - with a darker center.  This looks more like a ninja throwing star than a Celtic pattern, and it doesn't conceal the seams as well as the previous one did.

That design does have a ninja throwing star look to it, try a mirrored Celtic cross in the middle.

Out of the 2 latest designs, I prefer the first one, but I agree with Don about the ninja star look. Maybe putting a clover in the middle would be nice, or, as Billywiz said, a Celtic cross.

I still like the first one better with a darker center.  When I think of that kind of Celtic art, I can't remember ever seeing much of it moving in curves - it's usually straight lines and intersections.  What few curves you do see tend to be simple arcs or circles.  The third design is moving in the right direction, but a simpler cross pattern with a circle around the center, just like a Celtic cross, would look authentic and cover those seams nicely.

Just like I said on Facebook, I don't understand the color of the strips on the side. This design pleases me better but seems a bit too big to me. It looks like it is the center of attention rather than a little addition.

I like the look of that design Sean, it now has a Celtic cross look. Maybe brighten up the gold colouriing a bit to make it stand out more and give a little contrast. Other than that I think your on your way, now show us some of your ideas for the face of the cards ;D Good job.

I love the theme behind this deck! As someone who was raised Irish Catholic with a strong Irish influence in my family I can say I would love to own a few of these! As far as the latest design though, I would make the left and right branches of the cross more straight rather than the slight curve they have now.

Quite an interesting look Sean. A few thoughts:

- the extra bits at the ends of each cross arm look very "messy" to me, particularly with their proximity to the card border detail. I'm not sure those are entirely necessary.
- I'd definitely play a bit with some ways to get the cross to pop off the background more. Whether that's a shadow, glow, whatever. Your design is super complex and having too many of those details overlaying each other becomes hard to visually parse
- Can you give us a full res version of things? The green background is super high contrast (almost to a jaggy point), but the cross is looking blurred and indistinct. Think you need to get those a little closer in look, perhaps just a function of rendering out a higher resolution.

neat idea though, and seeing your progression is always interesting.

Thanks everyone so much for the feedback! But remember this design is in progress so think of all these designs I'm uploading as concept art : D
This is just me getting ahead of the game while I wait for the Galvanic to print.  I have always wanted to do this time of theme so I figured why not start now.
Why this theme though? Simply put I come from an irish background. My great grandparents came straight from Ireland. I am very proud as to where I come from and the whole irish culture. Every single thing about it. Irish pride thats all : )

I like the center of the celtic cross very much as well as the background. However I don't like the sides and lines of the cross. It seems a bit empty to me.

I like what you've done in the corners Sean, If you look at the center design long enough, you can see the Celtic cross. I would still like to see the cross design pop more, maybe use the same colour as the center design all the way along the cross design ( if that makes sense  :o ). Also thin out the white boarders so there not as bold. Keep up the great work.

I think it might look better if you continued the pattern on the inside corners of the cross (bottom left and top right) to the other two inside corners, looks a bit off to only have it on part of it. Also as mentioned above I would thin out the borders a bit :).
