Hello All

My name is Ross and I come from a little city called Bath in Somerset, England.

I have only recently (as in the last couple of weeks) got into collecting playing cards after looking for some cards that would be best for my fiance's father to play patients with. Seeing how many different playing cards there are and the different makes, designs etc. sparked something in me and I thought I might like to collect some myself.

Now I have around 30 packs and counting - I think I'm hooked.......

I've started mainly with Bicycle decks with a couple of decks that were used in Las Vegas casino's and a few cigarette advertising packs that were included with a purchase. Now looking to increase the collection as finances allow.

Also tried a little card magic but having large hands with shorter fingers makes that quite difficult.

I found out about the forum while looking up best playing cards and one to use.  A good article came up and it started from there. So really this site is to blame for another person starting their collection. Not that I'm complaining mind.....

I look forward to meeting you all and catching up on the posts here.

Hey, Ross,

I think your future father-in-law was playing "patience" rather than "patients."  Doctors have patients, while patience is an alternate name for a category of card games also known as solitaire - simply put, games played by oneself (or occasionally, two players can play head-to-head, each running their own solo game and seeing who can reach the highest score - this is sometimes even done with each player using a deck in the identical card order).

At thirty decks, you're definitely a collector - it took a little convincing to show my wife that she was a collector back when she had about as many decks as you, but she eventually was convinced!

Don't rule out your ability to perform card magic just yet.  There's plenty of fantastic card magic out there that doesn't require a single iota of sleight-of-hand skill beyond being able to shuffle.  Roberto Giobbi is a noted card magician, and his Card College Light series (Light, Lighter and Lightest) are all tricks requiring no sleights.  Big Blind Media, a UK-based magic company, also releases instructional DVDs of sleight-free magic as well as produces some really cool-looking decks of cards.

Hi Don

Thank you for the correction. I work in a hospital so it?s a force of habit putting patients rather than patience.

I think the number of decks are going to increase as I seem to be buying two of each deck - one to open and one to keep sealed. This may change with some of the rarer decks but we shall see.

And thank you for the encouragement in the Card magic department.  I will definitely take a look at the areas / recommendations you have given.
