NU19 National Club - Hochman only shows this Ace with NU9 National Pinochle, but here it is with a full deck and the NU19 National Club joker.  Great back design, too.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / La Paloma card back from KEM Playing Card Co.
« on: November 30, 2020, 04:32:26 PM »
Took a number of years, I was finally able to find one of the most elusive KEM decks - La Paloma. According to the September 13, 1937 ad in the Buffalo Courier Express, this deck was designed for and exclusive to the Flint & Kent upscale department store in Buffalo (I think this is also the source of the popular Kent back design). Came in red and blue, and I already had the Neillite box for this deck. Enjoy.

Got these in last week.  One of my favorite sets of court cards.  Hart's French Whist No. 68 with box and joker.

This is a non-Hochman listed USPCC ace, though the "MADE IN U.S.A." looks identical to the Standard PCC aces, so maybe it came with the company.  You can find other examples at http://a.trionfi.eu/WWPCM/decks08/d06454/d06454.htm

I don't own any of the Heritage Acorn backs, so I couldn't tell you about the margin.  I assume all the heritage backs are Air Cushion finish.  Prior to 1909, the Bicycle decks only came in Ivory (smooth) finish, and Ivory finish continued to be an option for some time, so you could check for that as well.  Also, I would expect some aging on the original Acorn back cards, seeing as how they are at least 75 years old (and maybe older for Brown decks).  Check out link for more info - http://bicyclecards.org/cards_post/acorn/

For the court cards, the size of the King Queen or Jack.  Around 1950, Bicycle shrunk the court cards, and it looks like the Heritage series uses the modern, smaller courts.  See pic for example of full size courts (1927 Bicycle Eagle back) vs shrunken courts (2014 Bicycle Cupid back).  Pip Color could also be an indicator.

This deck is in the original box, based upon the card on the back of the box matching the cards in the box.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Help identifying a deck - SPCC or not?
« on: June 30, 2020, 10:48:30 AM »
This one just came in.  Napoleon Playing Cards from J.N. Playing Card Company.  Box says Manufactured by The Standard Playing Card Co.  Standard Bridge Playing Cards No. 333.  BUT, there was a slip of paper with Japanese? writing wrapped around the exposed edge of the deck in the slip box.  So, is this one of the Japanese decks that claimed to be Standard, or is it actually a Standard deck?  All help appreciated.

Steve Bowling passed this info along to me the other day, so I thought I would post it here.  There are two versions of the US8c Ace, one that says Trade Mark around the base of the spade (1905-1915), and one that does not (1916-1926).  Steve gave me the years of issue, so I am posting examples with date ranges here.  Thanks, Steve.

Hochman does not mention that the black and white standard Ace of Spades also came in the narrow version - so I am adding it here.  Not sure what brand this came with.

Here's US60 Scout #108, also posted in Hochman Updates section.

I checked my 1909 Official Rules of Card Games from USPCC.  The Bicycle listing did not mention Air-Cushion finish, but other listings did.  I would guess they just didn't update the Bicycle listing, but they were available.  I don't have a 1908.  The next USPCC Official Rules of Card Games was not until 1911, and Bicycles are mentioned with Air-Cushion finish.  So, in all, I think 1909 is pretty spot on.

***** Updated ********

So around March of 1908 A. Crusius of USPCC was handing out "the daintiest little packs" showcasing new Congress designs and the Air-Cushion Finish.  Also, 1907 US Patent Office records USPCC's Air-Cushion Finish.

MSN 37 - KEM Playing Cards - Below are the 5 variations of the KEM Ace of Spades from 1935 - 1940.  There is also some minor variation in date codes and placement of date codes, but those are not addressed here.  Also included is a variant deck with the Kem name on two other Aces - only done in 1939 on a few deck designs.

Go Team!  Please only list decks with custom Ace of Spades, courts, joker or some combination thereof.  No standard decks with just a College, University, or Union back.

Maybe $30 each. Best bet is to go to eBay and do a search for sealed KEM cards and look at the sold items.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Courts change on old Bee decks?
« on: April 23, 2020, 12:12:21 PM »
I was looking through some old Bee decks, and noticed a pretty drastic change in the court cards at some point.  New wardrobe and maybe had some work done.  Anyone have an idea of when that happened?  I know it was pre-1942, but haven't been able to narrow it down any more than that.

US34 Jumbo Index #88 - this variant is not listed and I believe was short-lived - #88 Jumbo Poker c1927 - this is the only joker I have, but I suspect there may be another
