Introduce Yourself / I'm outa here

Mods:  Please remove my profile.  I do not have faith in this forum anymore.  I feel the mod of the forums here that I used to use are limiting discourse rather than promoting it.  I also have no faith in the one who set this forum up.  I will not return to "Discourse" or "AetherCards".

I am suggesting this following thread of thought to jump-start intelligent thought and considered discussion::

After some private discussions I have come to the conclusion that many characteristics including handling of a new deck of cards can be discerned prior to the deck’s release.  This is a large part of many reviews that I have read, but it should be known previously.

If we know the paper (pasteboard) and the finish used on a deck, we should be able to guess many of the deck’s characteristics.  Consider, all decks that are made of Aristocrat stock and Magic finish (assuming the deck is made by USPCC) should handle similar to each other.  The only things that would change the characteristics would be the amounts and types of ink, and the random factor of manufacturing (ie. USPCC lack of overall quality control).

Thickness of the chemical finish is a quality control issue that is an unknown and can change during any print run.  The amount of ink is a design issue and can have a significant affect.  I would hazard to guess that metallic inks are slightly thicker than standard inks.  Climate control during manufacturing should not be an issue.  I believe that temperature and humidity controls standards are the best controlled quality issue at USPCC.  All stock of paper and all inks are easily stored in climate controlled rooms.

There are only a small number of USPCC paper stock types and a small number of USPCC chemical finishes.  Once a producer decides on these factors, only the graphic art (and USPCC) can surprise us.

I welcome intelligent and considered discussion on the above thoughts.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Movies/Cartoon deck printed by USPC?
« on: June 23, 2012, 11:58:59 AM »
USPCC has done some of the movie/cartoon releases, but Cartamundi's Texas presses does most of them in the USA (at lease 7 Harry Potter releases to date).  There are lots of James Bond, Spiderman, Batman ... decks out in the wild, they are not always easy to find in release.  Except for the Harry Potter, I only find them at garage sales and Estate sales.  Though, I don't look very hard for them  ::) .

Oh Nathan,
It is very sad if you really believe what you wrote.  USPCC produces only marginally good quality card decks.  USPCC printing errors and cutting errors are incredibly horrible, all the time.  Their prices would be justified if the quality were 3 magnitudes better, but sadly, they are not.  USPCC does use a good variety of paper types, some as good as other large companies, some not.  There are other printing companies that do an excellent job with good quality, good inks, and good paper.
Cipher Kai,  there is a large mindset bias in many collectors/cardists in and out if the USA.  If your primary target will be the users of these forums, any printer used other than the USPCC will have this bias working against you.  If you are looking at a larger market, don't worry so much about USPCC.  There are other great printers out there.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: NEW DECK- Baroque Deck from Criss Angel
« on: June 13, 2012, 09:58:36 AM »
The only Criss Angel decks that I have were purchased at one of those dollar discount stores.  For that price, they were OK decks.  I put them in my collection and don't use them much.  I don't regret the purchase.
I bought a brick of the Yao Ji (Chinese) decks from Lee a couple weeks ago.  I have one deck nicely broken-in and they turn out to be very good cards!  For the price that Lee "arranged" to buy them (and ship them back to the US) they are excellent to practice with.  I will use these for years.  Better handleing and quality than most of what the USPCC puts out on the market.  They are not 605's but they are a good deck of cards.
USPCC might claim to be the largest card maker in the world, but that doesn't make it true.  Even with USPCC purchases of manufacturers, they haven't been the largest for a few years, either in profit or the amount of decks produced.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Theory11 White Monarch
« on: June 04, 2012, 05:48:33 PM »
The big thing that's got me busting a gut laughing is the review section for this deck at T11.  People are writing reviews who don't even have the deck yet!  They're gushing worse than anything T11 ever said about the first Monarchs release.  And they've only seen PHOTOGRAPHS!

But Don, think for a moment.  We know what a card feels like and how it will handle before it is made. (Stock\Finish ...) there are no surprises.  The only difference in USPCC cards made recently is the artistry (or lack there of).  SO if we have acurate pictures of the artwork, why not invent positive reviews before the fact.  Perhaps the reviews could be good enough that free decks would be given to the reviewers??

You might want to rethink the use of the Vivid name.  Vivid Corp (porn) might take exception.

Received my Kickstarter Tendril decks today!!  Can't wait to get them broken-in.  They feel great right outa the box. (I had a feeling they would.)  And the artwork ... great cards as expected.  By the way, pictures on the forums don't do the deck justice.  Super fast delivery and without using an outside fulfillment service.  Thanks again Paul !!!

I received my shipping notice today.  Dang, that was fast.  Hopefully, I'll have the cards in hand on Tuesday (Monday is a holiday in the USA)..  I apreciate the speed and priority that Paul gave to shipping and customer service.!!!!  Even if his next deck is butt-ugly(I sure hope it isn't), I will back Encarded's next release.  He has proven his committment to his customers and his business.
Thanks Paul!!

Oh Don
I have to respectfully disagree.  If you can't remember how many clips you have, it's time to speed up and document

It's only a convention deck!  There are hundreds of conventions every year, many with their own deck.  The deck producers are laughing at you this very minute.

jriffel... Shhhhhh... There are only so many to go around... Let's not let all the secrets out of the bag just yet...
Ahh, but jmrock is quite correct.  The older cards are quite more rare than what you will find on ebay.  Most of the vintage decks are not available to the public.  So you have to dig and be be patient, and strike when every opportunity presents itself.  This is an expensive hobby/compulsion.  But getting those special old decks has no equal.
One idea is to cozy up with some (much) older collectors and get them to put you in their will.  That way the lovely widow won't  be troubled trying to find a way to respectfully dispose of the collection.  It's a win-win situation.  Really!     I'm still trying to find that kindly old collector that will put me in his/her will.  LOL

There are also two card collecting clubs in the US.  They are an excellent source of knowledge (and card decks).  52+Joker is now running their annual auction for some fantastic(!!) older and antique decks.

1) Truely digital presses.  Get rid of printing plates completely.
1b) Oh, and better inks that will work with the higher resolution of the digital presses.
2) Laser sheet cutters that use the existing marks for centering the individual cards.
3) Management that cares about quality.
4) A ban on skulls and goth.  Even though that stuff sells, it's soooooo 80's.  Let's move on.
5) A rule that Bicycle/USPCC Legal dept. must accept/reject a design before manufacturing gives the OK.
6) Bicycle/USPCC project and line managers that know how to schedule projects.
7) An Ombudsman that knows the ropes of producing decks and helps others speed their design/production path.

Are there any independant reviewers out there (those that don't receive anything free from producers)?  They are the one that I will listen to.  I will ignore the bought-and-pair-for reviewers

It's about time for a new deck!  It's been weeks since their last deck release.  Weeks!  If The Twins are going to have a new deck ready for the monthly subscription (DOTM) they need to get on it and release it already.

We did tell "He Who Must Not Be Named" that we wanted something different.  What a sense of humor!  Well done.  I am going to break these out for my poker group later this morning.  What fun!  I'm glad that I bought a pair for my collection.  I usually purchase some sort of "whimsy" deck for each display-case.  This will do nicely.

Oh, come on. The jokers look cute.   Stolen, but cute.    The second tiger was from "Kung Fu Panda" if memory serves.  The first one looks like a knock-off of Tigg-ger from Pooh.  It would be a hoot to bid on if the shipping was a bit lower.
I think the images used are far enough away from the originals that he doesn't have to license them.

My wife and I collect rocks.  Semi-precious (and some precious only to us) freakin' rocks.  We currently have quite a nice collection of different types of pretty rocks. Heavy, dude.     Sorry for the pun............not really.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: How many collectors open decks?
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:59:31 AM »
Of the newer decks, I will usually purchase three, one to open/use/display, two to store sealed for future.  Older decks, I usually buy in pairs and I will store/display them opened.  Very old decks. I will get when I can and display them opened.
When I open my decks, I store them in plastic boxes and stash the tuck case (or whatever case) seperately. Opened and stored in plastic cases tend to insure that changes in temp or humidity will not warp the decks excessively.  I have had more than a few decks warp (permenantly) in the celowrap.  And many older decks that I have purchased have suffered from celowrapping for too long.

22
If this project is, indeed, helping designers create decks, this will be exactly what is needed.  More than the financial side of producing a deck (although the financial part is major) designers need someone who knows what is possible using USPCC and how (and when) to make decisions involving the deck production. An ombudsman, if you will.  This will speed through the timeline and reduce initial errors in decision making.
If The Blue Crown is willing to provide this service to designers, it will be the best thing that has happened to the craft in a very(!) long time.  While Kickstarter is a great service, it does not help the designer with the actual decisions about the card deck.
While I detest the sales policies of The Blue Crown, this will be the greatest thing since the Lithograph press.

23
I would be happy to drive the three miles to purchase and pickup the 605's for you, but local (California) sales tax would cost close to shipping prices you would pay anyway.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: What Card Deck is it?
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:41:23 AM »
The sad faces on the court cards suggest they were made in Hong Kong or China proper (not Taiwan).  Other than that I can't tell from that photo.  I have found that it is very difficult to put transparent cards into play.  They tend to make the brain work too much to differentiate the individual cards in a hand.  Penhaps it's true, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!"

Playing Card Plethora / Re: [Help] What is the name of this deck?

Does anybody know how I can get my hands on a few of these Club Angle decks?  I've been looking on-and-off for a couple of years and the closest I've found is to go to an Australian Casino and purchase some used decks.  That is not currently realistic. :(
