Playing Card Plethora / Re: Bicycle Vintage Vampires - Live on KS
« on: November 05, 2014, 02:13:21 PM »
I found it odd that the deck would be mixed in its design like it is - some courts are from classic horror literature while others are from Falksen's book series.  It's like making a lovely dessert which is one-half Key Lime Pie and one-half rutabagas.  They really don't go together thematically.  Are Falksen's books deficient in quantity of characters?  One only needs twelve.  Or is the author trying to get people to link his books with those classics?  If that's the case, the connection is tenuous at best, non-existent at worst.

I'm not well versed in classic horror literature nor in Falksen's book series but in an ignorant person's point of view (my perspective), I think it's pretty cool that his mixing it up. That way I get exposed to more characters aside from the cliche Dracula.

Even though I'm getting tired of Nat Iwata's style, I'd back this if it weren't for the tuck and the back. I thought he'd rework it since a lot of the people from the forums didn't like it, but it seems like he's just letting it be.

Got it Don. Thanks. I'll withdraw my pledge soon.

Seems like I missed out on something. I backed this project and remember seeing something about Ellusionist but I didn't really care to read (dumb move). Anyway, can someone fill me in on what's happening/happened with this Ellusionist issue?

2nd Edition? I didn't even know there was a V1  :P

His pledge tiers doesn't seem thought out. A 10 deck tier is cheaper than a 12 or 24 deck, and you don't really get much discount from getting a gross do you? It tells us to add 12 pounds for half a brick and 1 brick for shipping but only 6 pounds for 10 decks (and says otherwise again below for shipping outside of UK). I'm not even going to go through the other many discrepancies in the pledge tiers.

I looked up his 1st edition, and there seems to be some improvement here, but really that's about it. I have no idea how the pips are related to grain, probably designed after different types of grain? I was hoping there would be more customizations on the courts, perhaps making them dressed less like royalty and more like farmers or something. It is an interesting theme to be seen on a deck of cards though.

I messaged Ashley about the confusion in international shipping prices and how they don't match with the international shipping prices stated below the estimated delivery date. I don't think he understood me though. His reply was that "Yes it is confusing because everything depends on the weight of the PARCLE (I think he meant Parcel)" So he's saying that 6 decks is heavier than 10 decks.  :mindf-ck:

Looks like a Christmas deck.  :)

The good news is you can now make super limited runs of 100 decks or less (if the machine works that is).

I sense a free mason.

I'm not really into the whole minimalistic back but let's wait and see the rest of the cards.

Is there a theme here that I'm missing? Or is it missing a theme?

I wish they'd show a bigger image of the back design. I can't really make out what it is with the current preview.

Here's what I had in mind.

Sometimes I don't mind banners and text but this one just makes it look like he's tying his hair with a ribbon. And you know how other people are with "text and banners."

I don't know how you would do it but Don's semi-transformation deck seems pretty cool and I'd be 1000% more excited if it was.

And a quick note to it taking 6 months. I will admit to you that it took much longer than expected. But I was in the midst of graduating from high school, waiting on colleges, etc. I know that is not an excuse, but I am very proud of this and all that matters is that it is up now.

I see. Well congratulations to you. But I guess saying it took 6 months causes it to be misunderstood in a negative way.

Also, I am a member of the Magic Castle Junior Program. It is an elitist group at the Magic Castle for ages 13-20. I am one of three girls. We had to audition to get in, have meetings every month, and work hard at our magic skills. I just wanted to tell you because I hope you see that I am not making it up, I really do care about both cards, and magic alike.

I think that's pretty cool. I'm 22 and I still haven't achieved anything.

I apologize that the design is not up to par with what you all want. It has been a work in progress and I am content with the results. I know that for the next deck I should DEFINITELY come over here first, but at this point, I am just going to try to get funded as much as I can. While I understand that some of you are doubting the funding of this project, I would really appreciate all of the support that I can. I have been watching and backing many decks for months, and have seen both custom courts and not get funded.

Everyone is welcome to try and not everyone gets it right the first time. Anyway, best of luck to you and your Kickstarter campaign.

I don't feel like the rims on my car are large enough for me to own these cards.

Wow. That got me good. As for the cards, I would rather throw $10 towards a   "Mydnyghte rim enlargement" project.

Reminds me of the time when someone did a Kickstarter campaign for a Star Wars Death Star and a Rebel Alliance X-Wing Squadron.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, here are the links:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/461687407/kickstarter-open-source-death-star
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/simonkwan/crowdfunding-rebel-alliance-x-wing-squadron
They did get some impressive numbers. :)

As for the deck, the creator claims it's taken half a year to design them. The lack of pictures also most probably means standard courts.

Have I mentioned how much I love your work? I'll just say it again anyway. I love your work!

The 6 of hearts seems like a pretty sad story though. :( But lol at the 9 of hearts.  :D

Its a beautiful looking deck of cards...

We have to remind ourselves its not real gold, just foil made to look like gold. I'm not paying $90 for a deck of cards that I don't know the manufacture or the handling of. Your paying more then actual gold in terms of weight of the deck (paper gold). That's crazy! How low a print run it is or how rare it is to have foil on the backs means absolutely nothing to me. I'm on eBay almost everyday looking at the rare crap from yesteryear no one cares about. I have fond memories of specific decks that were the greatest thing since the wheel and super limited that most overpaid for.  "Some collectors" need to be better educated on printing techniques and how long these techniques have already existed. Its nothing new. It makes all the sense in the world getting a free rare deck for buying a brick from Ellusionist, Doesn't it? $90 for one deck, that we know nothing about other then the word "GOLD" is absurd.

We are all still just buying playing cards on these forums (Discourse & UC), Correct?

These cards weren't made to handle like whatever you're using. Obviously, this deck is targeted more at the collectors. Is $90 a lot? Sure it is! Even I hadn't bought one yet. But aside from how low the print run is, I believe the deck is rather labor intensive which also leads to the $90 price tag. The technique might have existed but I don't believe it's been done yet. If it has, providing picture of such a thing would be nice.

About the manufacturer, I don't think Lotrek mentioned it or is willing to but you could learn more if you read the discussions over at UC.

I don't want to be insulting....

BUT...

In order for any award to have validity in an industry, the institution for which is giving the award should be recognized as being credible by the industry.

UnitedCardists and Mike are surely names we know. Mike himself is a credible businessmen and is a very knowledgeable person in the industry.  BUT... Unitedcardists is not the leading authority of playing card communities anymore.

Adding LoopCuts involvement to an award makes this award NOT credible at all. It would be like Bernie Madoff having an award for investors. LoopsCuts/Robert Butler go hand in hand with creating new projects that don't quite fulfill their objective. I still have not received a refund from Robert for the Eco Clip. If I ever got an award with any connection to Robert, I would throw it in the garbage.

I don't know what you guys are thinking?

Must there really be a "leading authority" for this sort of hobby? If so, who do you think would qualify as the "leading authority" and what would be the criteria for it's selection?

Nice! I especially like the Joker.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Steampunk Goggles Playing Cards (KS)

I liked this steampunk deck. I regret not getting at least 2 of each. I only settled with one of each because I didn't think it would fund. And this project wasn't purely about the cards. They also had steampunk goggles for sale which were pretty cool.

There's already a thread for this.

Other than that, looks great! If everything goes well on my side than this might be my first Legends deck.

Sparkz, what's that blue deck?
