Introduce Yourself / Long time no see :)
« on: December 28, 2016, 12:18:43 AM »
Haven't been on the forum in almost two years, so I'll reintroduce myself.

Things have changed quite a bit...

When I joined this forum I had a miserable job, no money, no card collection...I was just looking to get into cards and back into magic.  Some amazing people, such as Don Boyer, Lee Asher, and Jackson Robinson had deep personal impacts, whether it was sending me a surprise deck or just being encouraging about my love for cards and magic, they really helped me find my passion again.

Since then, I have gotten married, got a job in investment banking, and while I can't collect and dedicate time to magic like I once did, I now have a deeper appreciation for the cards and life in general.

I'm back because I miss it, I really do. I read a few posts, and man I've missed a lot. happy to see Jackson is still killing it and 52+ has continued to grow it's brand.

Looking forward to catching up with everyone again. Maybe send me a pm or respond to this with your favorite deck I missed in 2016 :)

Looking to expand my collection.  Send me a list of some of your favorites and prices and we'll see if we can work something out!  I prefer tricks that don't require gimmicks (especially if they're card related), but if it's really worth the effect then I am.  I'm also interested in checking out some mentalist stuff.

Thanks!

Playing Card Plethora / Your Top 10 favorite Decks EVER, as of 1/9/14
« on: January 09, 2014, 04:03:34 PM »
Now that my collection has grown to a decent capacity and I've gotten my hands on several different types of custom decks, I thought it would be fun to go through my top 10 and solicit all your Cardies (better term anyone?) for your lists as well.  My list will be based on a combination of look, feel, handling, and a healthy heap of personal bias.  For your lists this is no holds barred, heck if you want to list 10 different colored rider backs as your top 10, go for it.  If you want to list a specific year, go for it, or don't, do whatever you want!!!

I will note that I don't have any collection, with almost equally as limited knowledge, of vintage cards, so I apologize for leaving them off my list.  I kept the list to cards I own (you don't have to), and the majority of my collection is from Ellusionist, D&D, and T11.

1. Federal 52, entire series, especially the originals - I haven't opened these bad boys yet, but I don't have to for them to be my favorite.  The design of these cards is unparalleled, 10/10 on the backs, courts, aces, tuck boxes, pips.  Major props to Jackson Robinson for hooking it up and for the design.
2. Exquisites, pick 'em between red and blue - the handling gets better every time I use them, great back design, classic courts. Props to Bill Kalush for the design and Don for the rec.
3. White Ghosts, Ellusionist - the best handling bikes from my experience, elegant card design, love the pips.
4. Split Spades Lions 1st Ed - Great all around cards, handling is excellent, great back design, core cards are my only knock.
5. S&M, v5 - once broken in these cards just handle so well.  I haven't used any v1-v3 so those could be even better, but I also really like the blue pips, the court colors, I'm a fan.
6. Bicycle Masters, Ellusionist - my practice deck, holds up forever, had to have a straight rider back on here somewhere, love the ace.  I think I like the Red over the blue and shadows.
7. Virts v2 - crazy handling out of the box, i for one really enjoy the colors, appreciate the thin boarders, the courts and ace of spades are great.  Not thrilled about the diagonal pips though.
8. White Artisans, theory11 - probably deserve to be higher on this list, but I can't break these in for the life of me.  The back designs and tuck box are just unreal.
9. Whispering Imps - I can't get over the tuck box on these cards in all honesty, just awesome.
10. (tie) Black Ghost 1sts, Gold Arcanes, Red LTDs - file these under the decks i'm too scared to open and should probably sell, but i love the designs of all three.

Honorable mention to D&D's Bruce Lee cards, probably handle better than S&M, like the black band, but loses major points for 1 way backs.

Design & Development / The Discourse Deck
« on: December 25, 2013, 01:57:52 AM »
Hey everyone, I've only been a member here for a few months, but I have been thinking lot lately about some new deck designs, vintage cards, and how great a community that has been built here.  The main question in my mind is has anyone ever undertaken the idea of creating a limited run of "Discourse" cards for the forums?  If not, this could be a great time.

Here is my thought process, please hear me out and read all bullet points before jumping to any conclusions:
1) We have some of the best designers on the planet, Jackson, Paul, etc (I know it's not fair, I could name 20 of you) posting here all of the time.
2) We have many people with an incredible wealth of knowledge and love of cards and card designs, look, feel, handling. I always wondered what a deck of cards would look like if Don, Lee, Rob, MrMollusk, and a bunch of you I see around had a lot of say for instance.
3) A lot of people here know how to run a successful kickstarter campaign, so getting the cards printed and shipped wouldn't be as big of an undertaking as it could be.
4) The designers are busy working on their own projects, but if we had a master thread, voted on ideas, and got small contributions from everyone, we could have quite the epic deck.  I say we give someone veto power as well, like Don or another moderator.  I really mean would could create something for the ages.
5) Which leads me to what started this entire idea in my mind - This could be an awesome opportunity to marry the designs of a modern deck design with vintage deck designs!!!

I would be happy to participate in any aspect if this is something that could work - I definitely think the deck would be called "Discourse".

I look forward to hearing everyone's feedback and thoughts.

These are the decks I am looking for:
2 Decks Federal 52 Part 1 (would like 1 branded, 1 unbranded, but two of the same would be cool)
Legends v1 all three colors.
Aurums
Silver (teal?) Decos

Here is a list of the cards I have up for trade, I would be willing to potentially buy the Fed 52s but it would have to be for less than the $40 I can currently get it for on Ebay.  Same goes for the Aurum, Legends etc, would have to be less than I can find on ebay.  Can also combine decks below with cash.
THEORY11
JAQK Blue
JAQK Black

I can't afford sealed ones but I've heard their handling and stock are some of the best ever on a set of cards.  I would love to get my hands on a used version but I'm not sure what they're worth.  Would prefer to trade, but will buy if the price is reasonable.

Thanks!

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Card or Money under watch
« on: December 13, 2013, 03:35:23 PM »
My sleight of hand is starting to improve and I'm starting to move to more complex tricks because of that.. I want to maybe start posting a few videos for tips feedback, but I digress...

If I could learn one trick, for the rest of time, it would be card or dollar bill under watch.  I have an idea for it that I think could be extremely powerful and be a centerpiece for my act for years to come. I know Asi Wind has an unreal version he does, but I want to try to find the technique in it's purest form so I can almost build from scratch. Does anyone know where I can buy a book or DVD from a top tier talent?  Out of curiosity, does anyone here already know how it's done and if so is it complex?

Thanks!

Introduce Yourself / My intro - Hi Everybody!
« on: October 18, 2013, 05:05:10 PM »
Hey everyone, my stage name is Skillz or Hands, but please call me "B". I'm really excited to discover and join the forums, this looks to be an excellent community.

I've lived all over the country - Baltimore, Miami, Chicago, Portland - but currently I reside in DC.

My goal is to be a combination Cardist/Magician, flourishing, sleight of hand, and performing come very naturally to me, but only recently have I started dedicating myself to learning the craft.  Daniel Madison is the performer to whom I can most closely relate. As far as whether I'm a collector or not..I guess you could say I am in that I'm collecting in search of the best possible deck for flourishing and sleight of hand (I'm open to suggestions). I'm not one to leave a deck sitting unopened for too long.

What got me into all of the above - nothing feels more natural to me than having a deck of cards in my hand. I joined the forum because I see years of experience in the fingertips of the people on the boards, and I feel like with some focus and guidance I could be great at this.

Thanks in advance for the greetings, I look forward to being an active member of this wonderful community!
