Hey, both those decks are nice! I wasn't the biggest fan of the V6s (not my favorite color in the series), but those are still great (and rare) cards. Sounds like you're 2 for 2 so far with this DOTM club. If they keep it up I'll have to look into joining.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

Where?  I haven't seen any, and they aren't selling them except for DOTM and Variety Boxes.  I can't imagine they have more than a small fraction of the print run left at this point - I never saw an S&M deck go on sale that lasted very long before selling out.  I've had to get my v5 and v6 in the after-market.

I think that's a joke... i think haha. It is funny how they have left overs after they said they had none. So I can see the humor in it for sure, but @Sabacc is probably right. It isn't like those are easy to get by any means. Unless you go to a reseller.

Any seller keeps some in reserve, in case there's issues with decks arriving to buyers damaged or defective.  D&D keep even more in reserve because of stuff like DOTM and VBs.

I thought the DOTM is for the new released deck.
So, why v6?

I think it's a good deal if you don't have the deck, but I usually buy D&D decks for more than 6 decks each, except for the plaid decks, just 2 each. So the DOTM is not a good choice for people who wants more than 2 decks.

So. The DOTMC costs 90$. So far:
v6 - 15$
tungestene - 20$
squeezers - 7$
42$ worth so far! Seems like a good deal. Tell me if my prices aren't right.

I would say that the Tungestene's market value is a bit closer to $35.... from what I have seen on ebay. The v6's right now seem to be $15 at the most... I have seen them for $10 or less in certain cases.

I tink digipunk meant it is a cheap deck. All in all I think the decks are not bad so far. They cannot possibly send decks that are "worth" 20-30 bucks every month although that would be awesome. I tink it will eventually be something like a variety box where every 3 to 4 months u will get a rare deck, which would amount to about 3 to 4 decks within a year.

OK, the value of the DOTM Club is there, I suppose, but I don't regret not joining.  He's giving out decks that I would have already purchased by the time he ships them.  What happened to that whole "new decks" thing - weren't the DOTM decks supposed to be new?  These are nice, but not new, and February's deck to me is a disappointment.

What does the postmark say when you get it?  Remember, you live in Britain, they're on the US West Coast and they may not be using the fastest shipping possible to send them to you.

they tell me the day they ship it last time it was the 12 and before that it was even later i always ask them mid month it hasnt been sent on the first week ever i dont think and i picked the cheaper shipping as it said shipping was included with it then on check out i still had to pay shipping even thoguh it was already more for international it dosent matter the time it takes to be delivred as long i know its coming so i can guage when to be at my fathers thats where i send my packages haha i understand they get busy though and the customer service is awesome so i dont mind

I sure hope so!

Also, although this month's deck was dissapoiniting, it still thing the value of this is worth it. I could sell my Tungstene and my v6 for probably $70 total for the pair, one or two good more decks, and that can be sheer profit...not like I'm going to sell them though.

Well it's hard to tell right now. Those is DOTM have only gotten a few decks. They may get some not so great decks and then a VB would be much better. But what if D&D sent out Jerry's to all the DOTM subscribers! That would be a game changer!! Granted I doubt that would happen, but my point is that it's too early to tell if DOTM is worth more or less than a VB.

Granted I doubt that would happen, but my point is that it's too early to tell if DOTM is worth more or less than a VB.

i can only ever hope they did that if they did i would get dotm for the rest of my life haha i think i would freak out when i opned the package and saw them but yep we will all have to see what comes next ill get it next year too and keep updating i was quite shocked i never got chinatown or plaid hope i dont get studs ><

Yeah I'm sure you'll get an IAOCP deck sometime during your membership!

I sure hope so!

Also, although this month's deck was dissapoiniting, it still thing the value of this is worth it. I could sell my Tungstene and my v6 for probably $70 total for the pair, one or two good more decks, and that can be sheer profit...not like I'm going to sell them though.

Are you also in DOTM Loldude? Do you find it worth the price tag?

I have it, and I think it's worth it.  I didn't pay for it (I got it as a gift) but so far my three decks are Tungstene, v6, and an Erdnaseum, so as of now, yes, I think it's worth it.

Well my dream would be Jerry's, but die to the very slim chance that would happen, i would say Magic Con, Absolut, and any S&M decks other then v6.

Given their output rate, I'd figure you should get a v7 at least. As well as 2-3 other D&D decks released in the remainder of this year.

Yep, I agree, as well as 1-2 T11 releases. Is it to late to join? And if I do join, will I get those three decks as well?

It is not to late to join. Also, no you will not get the previous 3. For example, I missed out on the Ohio Arrco deck (that was the first one) but I don't mind. I didn't want one anyway. It is like a magazine subscription. You don't get past issues, you will only get future ones. You will still get 12 decks though.

How do you still get 12 decks if you've missed out on the previous few? Do they send out multiple decks in a particular month?

They most likely add new decks to the list as this project goes along. They will probably give out a sect for DOTM, and never give it away for DOTM so people keep coming back, and keep getting it again.

I think it's just an ongoing thing. You'll  get 12 for the next twelve months. One for each month. Does that make sense?

I've been mulling over the idea of joining but right now I'm not totally convinced. The idea seems pretty fun though!! I'm excited to see the rest of what you get

You should get it! Even if the decks aren't worth the price by the end of 12 months, the surprise and waiting is the fun part of it.

I agree. I signed up right after I missed out on Tungstene and though I am quite disappointed with V6 and Bee Squeezer, the new package has arrived with an unknown pack every month is quite exciting for me.

I am wishing for the day a Jerry's Nuggets pops up as a DOTM.

I reckon if they were to do that, it would be done earlier when they just introduced the DOTM club. Because that way there would be less subscribers and it would entice other subscribers. It would not be when there are more subscribers as it would not be practical. Therefore a JN would be out of the question for the DOTM club.

Lol I doubt the Jerry's. They'll go broke if they send out Jerry's to you DOTM subscribers. But definitely the V7 when it's released though. Maybe if you're lucky you could get V5 or V4!

They sold Jerry for 350$ each. I'm 100% sure they won't give Jerry's away to DOTM.
Maybe they will hold some contests in the future, but not just easy raffle draw I think.

  • Facebook:
I'm still wondering what happened to the new decks part of the deal.  They've reneged on a fair amount of what they offered.  Here's their own description of the DOTM:

A one-year subscription to our Deck of the Month Club includes first class delivery of one brand new deck every month. A great opportunity to try out 12 completely different decks or start a playing card collection of your own.
All Club members will receive the same deck each month. 12 different decks (color variations excluded) will be sent over the course of one calendar year.
TERMS: All DOTM Club passes included a one-year subscription or 12 decks of cards. The fee includes all of our shipping and handling charges; you are responsible for paying any customs fees, sale or use taxes due to your purchase. All decks will ship the first week of the month, no exceptions.

Does this look to you like they've been holding up their end of the deal?  OK, you could interpret "one brand new deck" to simply mean "one deck, new or old, that's in a sealed and unused condition.

Zaganh: are they charging you for ANY shipping charges?  Or are the charges in any way related to customs, taxes, etc.?  And if what you said earlier is true, they're completely reneging on the "first week of the month, no execptions" clause of their offer.

Rather than asking customer service, have you looked at the postmark on the package where the stamp was canceled (or for digital postage, the date printed next to the 2-dimensional code representing the stamp)?

Yeah I think the "new" refers to it being unused and sealed. With many of the subpar releases these days it would be hard to make DOTM very cool if it was only new decks. You'd get a few cool decks like the seasons, mana, vortex, revision 1; but, you'd also get some eh decks as well.

So D&D are still holding up their end of the deal.

I just joined. I realized that since last 2 months were 2 "okay" decks: squeezers and v6, I figured either this month or the next one there would be an amazing deck. So here, I joined. + the shipping price is included in the price, making this much less costly than the VB#6.

I think there's been enough good releases that if they stuck with only new cards, they'd be able to find at least one truffle in the mud on a monthly basis.  Hell, look at the rate at which they were recently cranking out decks!  They could have spaced them a month apart and tossed them in!

The DOTM club costs more than 120$ for international buyers because of shipping. Which means the decks will be worth on average more than 10$. Which means there will be some rare decks to even out with the new and "cheap" (5$ range) decks. I am figuring they will put Jerry's, if they ever put some, within 3 months from now because they have given some "okay" decks lately and they will want more members.

While it's not impossible that would happen, I'd consider it unlikely.  They could make soooooo much more simply selling them as they recently did.  The community would blow a gasket if they did it.  I could envision people burning S&M decks in protest (and using Chinatowns as kindling for the bonfire)!

I completely disagree with you. There are a good amount of nice decks coming out but so many of them are pre-orders so they wouldn't even be able to send them yet. That leaves them with many of the decks that are barely customized and I wouldn't consider worthy of DOTM club. There's lots of buzz about good decks but many of them aren't even available yet!!

It will be wanted when it's first released. But the market will flood by them in short amount of time.

I don't know about that.  Supposedly, these decks are only available to people attending Magic Con.  That list can't be very long.  I'm sure there will be a few extras, but I can't imagine the Bucks making this deck in huge amounts.  It would only dilute the value of them, and if their decks become worthless, half their business gets shot to hell.

I would bet the money it costs to join Deck of the Month that the buck twins WILL NOT put Jerry Nuggets in it.
Let's face it the already have your money and you are relying on them being decent and sending you good decks, which if they had any sense they would. It means you won't be too annoyed and you wont complain. However let's face it - a Jerrys Nugget deck in good condition is worth more than the whole DotM. To give it away would be ludicrous. Why would they undervalue the deck, when they can entice people into the club by just offering decent decks. i think the DotM club is worth the cost (if you like D&D decks) they also give out good decks. Theres no benefit to putting in some Jnuggs.
Some Men just want to watch the world burn.

I would say you're right, Haz. I can see them putting in a Jnug so to bring more people into the DotM. I don't think they have a ton of people in the club as of right now. But if word got out that a Jnug went into it, I see their numbers increasing significantly.

After a bit of thought, maybe there won't be a JNugg, but there will, for sure, be a couple of rare decks (rarer than the Tungstene) which will help the bucks make more money in getting more members.

what they should do is say that every month one DOTM member will get the months deck and a Jnugg/ or a S&M V1 set/ or some rare deck, for them it would boost the sales of the club and make more people resignup when their time is up.
People say nothing's impossible, but I do nothing everyday.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

No. If they did that, they would have to give out more jerry's nuggets since they would have more members right away. However, by making it a surprise, they would only give some out to few members and still get more members. Also, I read the description, and apparently it doesn't say anything about the decks being new releases... ?

How does more members make any difference to what I said?

I am saying that each month 1 person will get a extra rare deck with their other deck. It is just a little incentive to buy the DOTM. People would know that they have a chance of getting a rare deck in their package and that would attract more buyers.

If D&D have 100 people signed up for the club and give 1 of them an extra deck, it is worth it for them. It wouldn`t be a Jnuggs every month, it could be a set of S&M V1/V2/V3 giving away S&M`s would only cost them production costs.

I don`t think that randomly giving away Jnuggs would attract more members. People see that they are already given away so why would they sign up?

The Jerry thing never come from D&D.
It is just some words from the member of DOTM that want them to include that.
I'm 100% sure that they will never put JN in.

Please stop talking about this, it's not the topic at all.
And it might mislead people to join the club.

BTW, about magic con deck, I think they will sell it with the magic con book or program or something like they had last time.
And people might by it to get the deck.

I'm with Lalita in that the whole J-Nuggs angle is pure speculation and not worth the paper it's not printed on.

Tossing in one J-Nugg a month or something similar as a lottery would encourage some new memberships, but piss off the older members - before the newbies jumped aboard, they would have had better odds of winning one.  Either way, the odds would still be very long, and I think many people could find better ways to spend their cash than hoping they'll get a J-Nugg with no guarantees of any kind.

The simple fact is that the program's sort of a "loss leader" already - you'll likely get more than your money's worth over the course of the year, but you're giving it to them in a lump sum that they can use immediately.  It's like you've given them an interest-bearing loan with a 12-month term, payable in playing cards!

They may have paid as little as $3 a deck for their supply, but as has been stated already, one J-Nugg could retail for more than three DOTM memberships!  It makes no financial sense whatsoever for them to give them in DOTM rather than simply selling them, even in small or singular amounts.  Say what you want about the Buck twins, but they know how to make money.

Did any one get this month's deck? Because they said in the description that they would send each product before the end of the first week of each month, yet we are the 13th and I haven't received anything...

Darn it! Spoilers  ;D

I'm happy about this because I don't have any blue split spades, outside from the ones in my DB variety box. I feel that te quality of these decks are so far pretty great (at least in my opinion).

That's cool! It proves my theory that all decks aren't new releases!

Actually that makes some sense. So technically they are not selling them directly in their store as some of us here have heard but they are earning some revenue off it indirectly from the DOTM and a variety box

They call THAT a NEW deck?!?  That's new only in the sense that it's still wrapped in cellophane and has an intact seal!

I'm sure they HAD MCv2, but they weren't available at retail yet.  They haven't yet used an unreleased deck for DOTM.

And to be fair, as boring as the Bee deck is, it's not the worst thing in the world.  Casino stock, traditionally cut, Ohio made.  It may not be sexy, but it's not a pack of Mavericks, either...

Sure, its not the worst deck ever,  but its just a plain old bee deck... So far they've release "bad" decks just before releasing rarer ones, which probably means the next deck will be a better deck.

If I was getting the DOTM, I'd personally feel like they misrepresented what the program was about.  It was made to appear that all participants would get new decks as in something recently released, and not simply new decks as in something someone didn't open yet.  Those Bees are at least a few years old.

It might balance out in the end in terms of value, but I'd still feel gypped.

Yeah keep dreaming! So far they've given you mostly fairly standard decks of cards aside from the Tungstene and you think they'll give you a MC deck? I'm sure they'll throw some in their next brick sets but probably not for this.

So, are these the Tally-Ho Split Spades in the black box, or are they the Split Spades Lions which are marked "1st Edition" on the bottom of the box?

This are the ones that say 1st Edition on the bottom: the less rare ones of 'em all.

Wait and see. They only sold for 8$ and are now worth 20-25$ on the aftermarket. They've already given some of their decks worth more than that.

So. Here comes!

October: 1st eddition arccos - 10$
November: Arrco US Regulation Blue Seal (OHIO) - 10$
December: Tungstene - 35$
January: Smoke and Mirror v6 - 10$
February: Bee Squeezers - 5$
March: 1st edition Split Spades Blue - 15$
April: Cambric Finish Premium Gold Bee - 5$
May: A. Bandit Deck - 15$
June: Aristocrat Reprints (T11) - 5$

So I'm pretty much seeing the pattern. It's a cheap deck, followed by a rarer one, and so on. So next month should be a deck worth about 10-15$.
Seams like a deal!

November: Arrco US Regulation Blue Seal (OHIO) - 10$
December: Tungstene - 35$
January: Smoke and Mirror v6 - 10$
February: Bee Squeezers - 5$
March: 1st edition Split Spades Blue - 15$
April: Cambric Finish Premium Gold Bee - 5$
May: A. Bandit Deck - 15$
June: Aristocrat Reprints (T11) - 5$

So I'm pretty much seeing the pattern. It's a cheap deck, followed by a rarer one, and so on. So next month should be a deck worth about 10-15$.
Seams like a deal!

The Aristocrat reprints aren't a T11 release - just like the plain Bikes, Bees and Tallys, they're a USPC release and T11 just sells them.  Awesome cards, though - among my favorites for a poker game.

Oh wow! I didn't know that! Good to know! Their cool cards, and although they aren't the rarest, I'm not complaining cuz it seems like there's a pattern going on: rare, not rare, rare, not rare.

While in the end, you're likely to make out OK, I think I still wouldn't join DOTM.  Every other deck being a "clunker" in terms of value doesn't sound all that great.

I guess it depends on your opinion. Since I stopped buying decks recently (need to save up to help out with high school funds), I'm glad to get a "new" deck once a month. I guess the decks will be newer once T11 and D&D start releasing decks again.

I am certainly not signing up for DOTM once my current one expires.

I had the impression that I am getting newly launched decks from D&D or at least T11 (due to their relationship) when I signed up and all I have gotten were not up to my expectation.

Where are the Plaid or FCJ or Chinatown?? I don't even mind Charity Water. I am not talking about expecting a MC2.

Bee Squeezers? Gold Bee? A.Bandit???  :-[

They introduced a buttload of decks since DOTM started, D&D more so than T11.  Maybe you'll get those you haven't already received in a few months.

Ya. But I joined in March, and the only decks released by D&D and T11 since then if I am not mistaken are the MC v2 and the White Monarchs. They could have given us previous releases though.

...and you may still get them.  I mean, if they're giving out gold-box Bees, perhaps you'll get that oh-so-rare deck-to-beat-all-decks, a red Bicycle Rider Back with a black seal, made in Kentucky!  :))

Totally agree with you. But that's kinda the disadvantage of this whole idea. You give them their money immediately and in exchange regularly get some good and not-so-good decks. You get a good surprise once a month though.
And I'm still waiting on those Studs and Aviators :P

Which Studs and Aviators?  Don't tell me D&D is selling Aviators now...

(checks the webiverse)

Damn.  I vaguely remember them doing that.  Even their really cheap decks aren't that cheap!

I guess their prices are ok. They're pretty close to the price you are looking at to buy the same decks at Walgreens or Walmart.

Not where I live.  A pack of Studs with tax is under $3 at Walgreens, and D&D charge for shipping.

Aviators are another story - they're mostly sold out of airports.  NOTHING is cheap in airports.  Even the price of breathing goes up...

Walmart doesn't carry either brand in my area, though they do have Streamlines for a buck, as well as their famed custom-boxed two-deck sets of Bikes...

In most stores where I live, bikes, Studs, Aviators, Bees etc. are between 3.5 and 4.5$ w/o tax. Of course, because of shipping, on D&D you'll have to pay more, but that's obvious.
Anyways, getting back on track. Here are some ideas of mine for decks to come (perhaps) in future DOTM:
- MC v2
- Dragon Backs (LOL)
- T11 Rebels (when they come out)
- S&M v7 (in a little while)
- Fulton's CJ/Chinatown
- Vintage Plaids
- Robocycle?
...
What do you think? I joined DOTM hoping I would receive custom decks, not decks designed by USPCC...

I agree with these 3.

- S&M v7 (in a little while)

What about for the rarer decks? I guess S&M v7 count as one, but what do you think they will include as the deck worth 10-15+$?

Here's my take on that list:

- MC v2
Maybe.  Maybe not.  Tough call.  They're pretty rare.  It's a strong possibility, but not a certainty.

- Dragon Backs (LOL)
Nope.  Too inexpensive and not known for their performance characteristics.

- T11 Rebels (when they come out)
Almost a sure thing.

- S&M v7 (in a little while)
Almost a sure thing.  I'd be shocked if they didn't include it.

- Fulton's CJ/Chinatown
Maybe, maybe not.  I guess it depends on just how long it takes them to sell them out.  And remember that the Chinatown deck was likely their shortest run of a generally-available deck (this doesn't count either MC deck, nor does it count decks made by other companies/people).

- Vintage Plaids
Practically a sure thing.  Some love them, some hate them, but they seem to be mostly popular.

- Robocycle?
Take everything I said about the Dragon Backs, and add "and they're kinda ugly" to it.  Not USPC's most popular deck.

There are other possibles...

T11 Monarchs - they already sell them.  Don't hold you breath on the white ones, though!

T11 Sentinels - recently reprinted and back in stock.

T11 Bee Stingers - Ohio originals or Kentucky reprints.

T11 Propaganda - either the original Ohio decks, the Kentucky reprints or the "version 2" they mentioned was in development (though that was so long ago, it might be off the production calendar).

T11 Platinum anything

Arrco Tahoe blue and red reprints - this is a highly possible deck, since it wasn't terrifically expensive.  Even the black and inverted black Tahoes are a possibility.

Some uncanceled casino deck (NOT JERRY'S NUGGET!)  Well, actually, there are other Jerry's Nugget decks - the actual casino issue, as opposed to the gift shop version.

You can cross your fingers all you want, but you'll have the same deck as DelMagic, which in this case would be Fulton's Clip Joint, right?  Unless you're referring to next month...

I'd die of laughter if the next deck (or any of the decks) was a Bicycle Rider Back, or a Bee Diamond Back, or perhaps some Tally Ho decks...

Yes, I was talking about next month. I doubt the twins will be dumb enough to send us such a classic and simple deck.

Hey, they sent you Fulton's Clip Joint - anything's possible!  And they do carry the "common" brands in their shop.

Yeah, I don't know either, but I know a lot of people will start complaining and grunting at D&D if they don't step it up. International people paid 125$ I believe for the DOTM including shipping. That means it's not worth it if the decks aren't on average 10$ each. And for the past 2 months they haven't been.

I just checked, it costs 139.95$ for international, including shipping. That's huge. If I hadn't been domestic, I probably wouldn't have gotten it.

Wow, that's kinda stupid... For domestic, shipping was included, and since international had to pay 40$ more for the decks, I thought it would also include all the shipping...

What's No-Doz?
I'm really disappointed. Up till now, every other month the decks were pretty good, but now they just suck. But after 3 consecutive months of crappy decks, I'm pretty sure they'll give us a better one soon. Or at least I hope so.

October: 1st eddition arccos - 10$
November: Arrco US Regulation Blue Seal (OHIO) - 10$
December: Tungstene - 35$
January: Smoke and Mirror v6 - 10$
February: Bee Squeezers - 5$
March: 1st edition Split Spades Blue - 15$
April: Cambric Finish Premium Gold Bee - 5$
May: A. Bandit Deck - 15$
June: Aristocrat Reprints - 5$
July: Fulton's Clip Joints - 5$
August: Vintage Plaid - 5$

It's a nice deck, but it's not what I expected.
After 6 months of me being in the program, it's added up to 50$ for me. So after 12 months, if I double it, that would make 100$. The price I paid. I'm not paying for shipping, but it's still VERY disappointing. They better give us some red JAQKs or Jerry's or some DB new decks. Or I'm suing them. Just kidding. But I will slaughter them  :mindf-ck:

A few of your values are a bit low.  For example, the Blaine deck is worth a little more now.

I'll don't think tungstene or  1st edition Split Spades Blue are decks that cannot be sold..

Of course they gotta send some good decks out. But others are just their way of getting rid of their decks. I think this is the main reason they created this DOTM.

Well then if that's the case they can be sure I won't buy any of their products again. Anyways, that's why I bought DOTM, so I could get some "new" decks every month without spending a penny on that month. I didn't turn out to be as great as I expected, but it wasn't too bad.

But for every kick-ass deck, there's two clunkers.  Perhaps "two outta three ain't bad," but one out of three sucks everywhere except baseball batting averages.

After 3 months of meh, they finally sent a winner. A good one had to be coming and I'm very happy with this. I don't have any of them and I wasn't interested in paying for the stripper deck deal to get one.

After the winner last month, back to the ho-hum: Blue Arrco from Ohio. A nice, useable deck, but rather old IMO.

No, more like $18-20 for a pair. This is decent if you don't have it, but I'd prefer something fresher, or a lot older.

I think in the end, while a few D&D statements were a bit misleading, you're getting your money's worth with DOTM.  It might have been nicer to have more current and rare decks, more vintage and rare, or both, but you aren't getting ripped off for your investment (except perhaps for those paying international shipping - that will vary country to country).

I agree Don. It isn't a ripoff, but I doubt I would have spent my money on most of the decks I've received so far since the great majority I already had. I still have about 4-months left though, and I am looking forward to it as I'm confident there will be one more goodie before my year is up.

Yeah. The arrco isnt bad, but most of the decks I already had or probably wouldnt have bought otherwise. With 4 months left as well, I'm also hoping for at least two more goodies, and maybe some newer releases (july-october). I wont be signing up once again unless they really amaze me in the last months, which I doubt will happen. Plus, I'm not really buying so many decks any more. Rather, I am trading for the ones I really want, and actually enjoying the hundreds I have.

Ehhhhhh

I always thought DOTM would be new releases + old gems. Not widely available old decks.

Del, would you for example pay 2x the cost for an assurance of quality, elusive decks?

There's been too many ho-hum months. I won't be renewing. I'm sure when the 12 months are done it won't be a loss as far as value is concerned, but I would like more zip in the selections.

Yeah I think it's a pretty good deal value-wise since they did throw in things like Tungstene from time to time. However, I agree, I think at one deck per month there needs to be more bang and less "oh I could just have bought these on eBay a month ago."

I still didn't got mine, but I'm really happy with those news.
First because I will get that deck.  :D
Second because D&D show that they are more and more aware of the concept of a club called "Deck of the Month". It's not for the value of the decks. Even if they choose to send a cheap and common deck, if that deck is fairly new and it has some characteristic that is worthy, that deck deserves to be the deck of the month.

Bye now, I'm going to sit at my door waiting for the mail man even considering he will only come for the next 15 hours.   ???

Are we talking just the "carbon fiber" deck, or the entire boxed set?  They're marketing the whole set as S&M v7.

Probably not.  The deck's go out in a single monthly mailing.  Your first deck would be the January 2013 deck.

It's the carbon fiber deck, not the whole set. They only send out one at a time. Perhaps the others will show up eventually.

Any updates on what the new decks have been? Does anyone still subscribe? Rumor is, Ultimate deck is the deck of the month of March. That's totally worth it!

Hey that's not too bad and finally true to their description of the DotM Club. December's was the Carbon deck and March was Ultimate deck. Two decks in which are both expensive to acquire. Doesn't quite make up if they send things garbage decks (or decks easily obtained for cheaper or the same price as the "average" deck of the month) between fairly good releases.

I can't remember exactly because I got the mystery decks in January too and like 5 of them were vintage plaid, but I think January was vintage plaid, February was an Aladdin, and this month was the Ultimate deck. Its not terrible. I actually think if I did the math right at the 6 month mark right now I am ahead a few bucks but that will probably change.

You'll probably end up ahead.  The track record seems to be something like two unexciting decks to every one good one.  A lot of people felt that it was a little misleading in that they were led to believe they'd be getting new decks each month - Vintage Plain and Aladdin don't exactly qualify there.  But in the end, the total value of the decks exceeds what they paid.  It's only an issue if you're getting excessive duplicates of decks you already have enough of or just don't want.

But now with their 2013 releases, Rey can throw in the NFB and Steamboats for two different months because they are technically "new" even though they're not worth a lot. With all things considered though, the membership for DotM includes shipping within US which is a plus seeing as the shipping from D&D is quite expensive.

OK, but...who's Rey?

Boil it down to brass tacks and they can toss in whatever deck they feel like, based on what they've done before.  By and large, it's most likely to be a recent "vintage" deck taken from one of the off-the-beaten-path USPC brands, a D&D deck or a T11 deck.  Twelve eight-dollar decks would be slightly more than the cost of the membership.  They haven't gotten that lazy as a whole, and not every deck is even worth that average, but enough of their decks exceed the $8 mark to balance out the "clunkers".

Which makes the membership worth it if you received some of their higher priced decks. I honestly was considering picking up the membership after hearing that the carbon deck was sent out earlier. Seeing the Ultimate deck being sent out made me regret not signing up. It's as you said, they haven't gotten lazy enough to toss in terrible decks lately.

...and even terrible decks get offset by "awesome" ones like Carbon and Ultimate.  I seem to recall one month they gave out Studs, if I'm not mistaken, and this was when they were still available at Walgreens stores.  Depending on your region of the country, that deck was probably a $2.00-3.50 deck!

I feel these two quotes sum up many people's opinions about the DotM Club overall:

There's been too many ho-hum months. I won't be renewing. I'm sure when the 12 months are done it won't be a loss as far as value is concerned, but I would like more zip in the selections.

Yeah I think it's a pretty good deal value-wise since they did throw in things like Tungstene from time to time. However, I agree, I think at one deck per month there needs to be more bang and less "oh I could just have bought these on eBay a month ago."

I would say that quote resonates well with me as well. That's why I haven't purchased the club membership because I don't want to receive something I could've gotten for the same price on eBay. Their Mystery Deck results made me very weary of surprises.

The Mystery Decks, while somewhat unpredictable, were at least a better bargain at, what was it - $5 a deck?  $6?  A dozen Mystery Decks were less costly than a dozen DotM decks and you at least had a small chance at something really special, like a Jerry's Nugget or one of a few other rarities.  There's zero chance of that with DotM, unless they change the rules on how they operate it.

The Ultimate Deck is one that I would like to have, I just don't want to shell out the money for it. Though I already missed it for the DoTM deal, its presence in the deal makes me really consider going DoTM.

I'm still trying to figure out what people find so darn attractive about that deck.  Sure, the box is pretty, but some of the cards inside are coyote ugly.  And it's one of the least practical decks I've ever seen, nearly useless for magic or games.  The only thing I can think of that would make that deck any worse than it already is would be a coating of sand and finely ground glass, applied while wet...  Not pretty...  Nope...

If you see D&D come out with some kind of stellar and expensive deck in the near future, that would be the time to "pull the trigger" and get the membership.  You'd then be signed up in time to receive that deck should it be offered in the future.

Don, I'm usually on par with much of what you contribute to the forum but I think you've misinterpreted the reason this deck was produced.  I don't believe it was ever created for magicians or playing games, it was created as a nice way of showcasing the many art designs and branding behind the various products Stranger & Stranger has packaged and marketed. A "thank you" gift for clients and friends of S&S.

Does one nice deck make the DOTM club worth it, when just about everything else they give out appears to be overstock and common?

I'd have to say DOTM is worth it...no matter what cards arrive.  It's less than $8/month shipping included.  Custom decks these days are selling for between $5.95-$7.95 each.  Add shipping and you have a deck around $10 (on the lower end).

I think looking at what they've already produced, you'll figure out some of the decks you can expect to receive in the future...not to mention any decks they have planned for this year.

I understand that perfectly.  And if it remained just a gift for S&S clients, I would have no real opinion about it.  But it then became a product of Dan and Dave, on sale alongside all their other magic and cardistry products.  At that point, it was being marketed to magicians and other people who use cards and is subject to being judged by those criteria used by the customers they're being marketed to when comparing products to each other.

The Ultimate Deck is one that I would like to have, I just don't want to shell out the money for it. Though I already missed it for the DoTM deal, its presence in the deal makes me really consider going DoTM.

It would depend on how full your collection is.  If you didn't have the overstock/common cards to begin with or simply want more, it'd be a great value.  For people who already have those cards in adequate quantities, it's more like "meh".

Most of us, when we heard about the club when it was introduced, though, "Wow, a new deck each month," thinking that each deck would be a new product recently released.  When we saw that "new deck" simply meant "still shrink-wrapped", the "WOW!" factor became more of a "wow" factor.

I would consider each card within the deck "art." With that said though, I only like a handful of cards in the Ultimate deck, only a handful. The idea in itself (a collaborative "art" deck) more attractive than the deck as a whole.

Maybe they believed that the phrase doesn't apply in their case? Either way, would be nice to get this if I had DotM but I wouldn't get it for just this deck and don't feel I'm missing out.

Decided to spurge out and sign up today. Pretty excited to get my first deck! I don't even know what to expect, it seems as though all of the decks so far are currently sold or have been sold by dan and dave. What happens when they've used their current stock list? Hmmm..... I do like the mystery aspect! White monarchs would be awesome, but I think a little over optimistic on my part.

Well, they just released a deck package of six decks, of which only one has been a DotM giveaway...

White Monarchs are very unlikely.  The only "non-D&D" decks they've given away have been less expensive, uncommon decks rather than genuinely rare ones.  And in those cases, they were decks he was selling on their site previously.  As they've never sold White Monarchs, it's unlikely they'll do so now.

Before I send a question to the dan and dave customer service department, has anybody else received their deck for April yet? I bought it around march 24th, and I was told it would be dispatched early in the month. I've not had a shipping confirmation, or a received package email (from my us mailing thing). Thanks guys!

PS. I'm looking forward to the surprise, so please refrain from posting what you've received (if you've received it) in a direct response post to this question. Thanks again!

Edit: I literally received an email whilst I was posting this message! I've been stopping myself from posting for the last few days, thinking this exact thing would happen! On another unrelated note, shipito gave me several options for shipping. The one was $81.30!!!! FOR ONE DECK!!! Think I'll go for the $3 option....

Thanks don, but I already edited my post. I didn't know whether to start a new topic about something that already exists, or post here. I guess I was always gonna be wrong either way!! All sorted now, so I'm not reading this one again till it arrives!

Old thread here but I couldn't find anywhere better to post the question, and it may be a dumb one.  I got my DOTMC deck today.  I received S&M V4.  I already had this deck which is fine but here is my concern.  The deck I already purchased from the D&D site ,individually, is cello wrapped with no seal.  The deck I received today has no cello and a whitish seal.  I assume they just broke down deluxe box sets and sent them out.

Can anyone in the DOTMC tell me if the got a different S&M version?

Is there any difference in the feel of my 2 V4's?  D&D site states that they reexamined everything for the box set including stock, artwork etc.

Just curious as I don't open most of my decks.  Thanks Gang!

The only visible difference of the two decks is cello (right) and seal (left).  All artwork and text on the tuck is Identical.  Thanks

The ones with the seals are from the deluxe box and the ones without are sold individually. There is no difference other than the seal and the cello. They both ahould contain 52 cards plus 2 ad cards and 2 jokers. Just so you know those the not the actual v4. They are the v7 Eco :)

The name is more accurate, v7 Eco, along with v7 Smoke (Luxury Edition), v7 Mirror (also Luxury Edition), v7 Paper Denim (blue v5), v7 Rouge (red v6) and v7 Carbon (the one unique deck to the set) - collectively known as the Smoke & Mirrors Version 7 Collection.  But the v7 Eco deck is actually quite different from the original v4 Eco.

The courts of all of the v7s, instead of being the signature Smoke & Mirrors minimalistic courts used in different color schemes in versions 1 through 6, are USPC-standard courts only slightly altered - my v7 Smoke deck courts are colored in red, yellow and black and look much more like a pack of Bicycle or Tally-Ho.  The finish on all of the v7 decks is Magic Finish, which was never previously used on a Smoke & Mirrors deck - when unwrapping the deck, you can pick up the distinctive chemical smell of Magic Finish and you can feel the difference in the performance.

So the v4 design actually comes in three versions now - the original (without seal), the pre-release convention version (same deck with a green D&D seal) and the v7 Eco.  The seals on the v7 decks are all perforated along the curve of the thumbnail cutout on the tuck box, allowing for a clean separation without the need to use a knife to cut the seal, only the pressure of your fingernail.

I know this is not the smoke and mirror thread but the v7's fans awesome, cuts awesome, and lasts a long time. Handles better than any other magic finish deck that I have. might be the variant stock though. But I remember reading somewhere of a review that there were actually 3 runs of the v4, as there were 3 different ad cards from the original v4s. I cannot seem to find it. Finding the review as I am submitting this post. Will edit the post when I find it.

If you find it, post it in the topic on the v7 decks or the one on the v4 Eco.

That's strange. I got the exact same with no cellophane and the different seal, but mine are the red v6 version. Not complaining, as I've never owned a v6, but I'm wandering why mine are different.

I'm pretty sure they just blew up unsold box sets.  I figured everyone would get different ones.  This confirms my thought.

In theory, everyone's getting "the same deck" - they're all Smoke and Mirrors version 7!  This is simply a different color...

Deck of November is the Bruce Lee playing card. I found it in my mailbox today. Not a big fan of this deck. However, It feels good to get it on the release date.

This to me seems to be a worthwhile club, I wanted to join but they've shut down international orders so I can't :(
With some of these decks being ones I can't get in the UK at all it would be fantastic :)
Getting the fulton decks on release also seems pretty cool

Well, there are big drawbacks.

On the one hand, you do get more in decks than you would have paid at retail.

On the other hand, the lion's share of those decks will be of their own store stock - their decks, or perhaps a T11 or CARC deck.  Now and again they come out with something like a blue-seal Arrco deck, but easily half or more of the decks will be theirs, and at least some of the rest will be other companies they're tight with.

You don't always get the Fulton's decks when they're released, or the D&D decks.  Notice the Steamboats repro decks were released at about the same time as the NFBs, but they haven't been issued as a DOTM yet.  If you do, and it's a deck that comes in more than one color, you're only getting one deck of one color - you'd still have to place an order if you wanted the other or if you wanted two of that deck, as many collectors buy a pack to open and use, a pack to store and save.

If you aren't a die-hard D&D fan who loves every deck they issue with a passion, you stand a good chance of getting clunkers as often as decks you want if not more.  Then is it really worth the purchase price of membership anymore?

Back when it was around $100, I thought it was so worth it that I bought two.
Since I collect at least that many of every deck they produce, it made it cheaper and easier.

Plus, they ship their decks safer than any other retailer. ;)

The Buck twins are WAY too sly.
That's an awesome idea though. It's nice to see D&D throwing their DOTM members a bone.

Still.... final edition of Smoke and Mirrors my ass. I wonder if these are going to be available in the shop.

Thats 54 cards. not 52 as on per the box. and the "Private Reserve" is a nice exclusivity touch.

Agreed with the "final edition my ass", but they might not show up in the shop.  They could be a DOTM only thing.  (Though I'm not really holding my breath.)

Something told me that these guys were going to be too tempted to go back to the well for another bucketful, and sure enough, they did...

I was happy to find this in my mailbox today as well.  First time since joining the club that I've been really excited to get their DOTM.  Kind of nice to get the Bruce Lee deck last time as I didn't want to come out of pocket for it (yes, I realize I paid for it but it was long ago and it works out to 8.25 per deck shipping included).  Anyway very nice addition.  Would be wonderful if these aren't available to the general public but I seriously doubt thats the case.  Tuck box is significantly bigger in all directions than the std.  Seemingly larger even than what would be necessary to house the foil wrapping that holds the deck.

Nah man, that's the loop hole. They said that V7 would be the final one but if they release a new one and still call it V7 they didn't lie. Genius!

And all this time, I could've had a... a... NO, I CAN'T SAY IT!!

I've ranted enough in these pages about D&D deck design, and there's really nothing I could add.  It's a good thing they have enough rabid fans who'll buy any deck they make (as long as it's "Smoke and Mirrors")...
