I have the T11 version.  The D&D models look different, assuming those card images in the background aren't just decor.

I moved the post over here because, even though this deals with playing cards, I think its more of in a magical kind of way rather than a collectors way.

The cards are very, very cool though.

Yeah, they're cool.  And definitely not playing cards.  Not unless you like a deck of handmade cards, 52 of which would cost more than a brick of anything you've ever bought...  :))

Yeah, I did.  So now there's a choice:

Theory11: three Bicycle Rider-backed for $19.95
Dan and Dave: one for $6.95, choice of Bicycle Rider, Bee Diamond, Tally Ho Circle, or Vintage Plaid Arizona.

Same manufacturer, too.  It's a small world.

I have the theory11 ones and I must say they are very nicely handcrafted. Haven't worked out a routine using it though. Dan and Dave have brought it one step further and catered to the masses with a variety of different backs. Well done! :D

i totally agree with you .. they are offering the hofzinser playing cards with alot of different back design .. but i would prefer they offer back design for the fulton clip joint of smoke and mirror series .. since i do not really do magic with the plaid deck

The idea was the deck to be compatible with regular and simple-backed decks. They can't produce a different back for each and every single one of their decks!

The Hofzinser cards require a red back for the gimmick to work.  This would rule out FCJ and all but version 6 of S&M.  Even that version might not work, because it's a rather dark shade of red.

A good way to work them into a routine: do a "pick a card" routine and force them to pick the normal version of one of the hidden faces.  Draw the Hofzinser card and declare that it's their card, to which they'll say, "nope, you're wrong, I fooled you, etc."  Do some "hocus pocus" on the card, hold it up to the light, and declare, "I told you it was your card!"  If you really want to sell it, draw the real face card that's on the face of the Hofzinser, hold it to the light, etc., then in the "hocus pocus" phase, swap the real card for the Hofzinser - that would be VERY powerful...

Nice one Don. Will try that out some day.

@hawjinjian normal everyday cards would make more sense rather than rare decks. Just like how you do not see a gold arcane gaff or a red artifice gaff.

On a side note, would it be possible to use black spot cards to do the hofsinzer card if they were to use the black rider back? Hmmmmmmm.

Black isn't known for being translucent when held up to the light...

The faces are red suits, always, and the backs are red.  The hidden card inside is always a black suit.

In theory you could use other colors, but red does the best job of disguising a red-suited face when you're looking at the card from behind.  Matched colors for face and back work, as long as their translucency is at least as high as red if not higher.  But if you switched to another color back, you'd have to recolor the hearts or diamonds to that color as well.  It MIGHT work if you have two different colors of equivalent translucency, but there's no point in risking it, or for that matter making the spectator curious.  Red's a traditional playing card color, and it works.
