DOOMSDAY DECK:  This is a new design by Diamond Jim Tyler.  DJ often looks for things that are intrinsically magical to inspire his performances and to reach the subconscious of his spectators. Neuro-linguistic programming techniques like this help to coax the audience to respond more strongly to your magic!
The black and white card backs feature ancient imagery based on the Mayan calendar, a compass rose, sugar skulls and more.  The cards are poker-sized Bicycle stock with an embossed or "apocalyptic" finish. The deck was licensed with Bicycle faces so they can be implemented into 808 decks for various magic routines. The deck includes two duplicate Jokers, a unique Ace of Spades, a blank-faced card, a double-backed card and a secret one-way design.Buy them before the world ends on 12-21-12.  The clock is ticking!

Meh. He put a lot of time into it, but it's just not my style. The one way back on the skull is nice, but I think it would better be incorporated into the hourglass, but I understand that wouldn't be useful while fanning or spreading.

No, the Myan calander is actually cyclical but some of the information was lost when the Spaniards invaded. CBJ, I am always stunned by your intel gathering on new cards but sometimes I wish you would miss a few to asuage my anguish having to buy them.

Sorry bud, I'll try to cut back  ;)

It is getting way out of hand.  I am stunned by the amount of deck that are coming out.  I'm sure the bubble will burst... but when?

Meh, I have the original decks and they're interesting, but I'll pass on these. Unfortunately we gave Jim the advice to print with USPCC before the market exploded, and now the cards are simply not interesting enough in my opinion.

At least he changed those god-awful Jokers from the original deck.

There isn't really a bubble persay... Good decks will get funded and bad ones will never see the light of day.. The more there are the more there is to cherry pick from. I don't see why "having SOOO many new decks" should be a problem for the community.

Actually these should be renamed as tattoos and kick the other pile of crap of a deck out of the game. I have to say that I cannot be disgusted enough with those tattoos.

I think anyone who does is an imbecile or a madman.  I don't believe in NLP, either.  As for the cards, I agree with Alex; they're just not interesting enough right now.  They're kinda nice, I like the concept but standard everything bar the ace and the jokers (which I don't like; looks like clip-art) just isn't enough, I think.

These are not plastic coated, they are USPC air cushioned finish as far as I know.

The back design is intensely detailed, very nice work. BUT, I'm honestly a little over the perfect symmetry and black and white look. I've got so many decks that do that already, and adding another really isn't a compelling move right now.

Doesn't look like a deck I'd be interested in.  In fact, the timing could have been much better - he's releasing them AFTER the supposed "end of the calendar" apocalypse!

After all the stuff I've seen and bought, a new deck has to really be a standout for me to be interested enough to buy it.  I'm giving up the "gotta get 'em all" mentality that can consume a collector.  If I stopped collecting today, I'd have enough cards to last for years, if not a lifetime.

CORRECTION: got my dates mixed up, the world isn't expected to end THIS year...  D'oh!

They are to be released on 2-12-12 so theres still a decent amount of time before the world "ends" :).
I agree with most others though, this one seems kind of bland. With all the great new deck ideas coming out I think the community is becoming more selective which is a great thing. That being said, I most likely will not pick up any of these.

Yeah, but it is releasing next year; however, it's only February. So it is the new year, but its only 3 months more or less.

It really depends how your read into it.  dd/mm/yy or mm/dd/yy

Both are used, for example people refer to September 11th 2001, as 9/11 that would be mm/dd. So depending on what the creator of this deck prefers to use, he could mean February 12th 2012 or December 2nd 2012. When I worked at my local ski resort, because of the amount of foreign customers you would see the date written on the consent/safety forms multiple different ways.

Or, as Austin said, Alex could just be saying it sarcastically.

I'm going to be passing on these decks.

I might reconsider if there was some way of identifying the Gild Edged ones from the regular ones.  Maybe a different seal, and different color tear strip.

Didn't hear there would be a gilded version.  I never liked those decks - they don't handle as well and that gilding wears off so it looks ugly and makes a mess when you use them.

Another reason for me to not buy this deck!

New information:  The deck has released, and there's a silver-edged limited edition version of it as well.

From Diamond Jim Tyler's website:
1 deck: $9.95
1 brick: $99.95
1 uncut sheet: $39.95
1 silver-edged deck: $19.95 - only 500 made.

I think his $4.95 deal for his Gemaco casino cards with his name on them are the better deal.  Limited edition of 1000, not many left.

What the heck is it with new silver-edged decks for magicians and flourishers?

The countdown clock on his website is still counting down.  It wasn't counting to the release date, just the apocalypse date...

Probably just a variant of Magic/Performance finish.

Please pardon me in advance if it's cross threading, but maybe not because I have a Doomsday deck I'm getting rid of less than Diamond Jim or AceKing is selling it for, which may help some people out on here... http://www.ebay.com/sch/jmrockauction/m.html?item=150771217271&sspagename=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649&_trksid=p4340.l2562 From my understanding, the Apocalyptic finish is just Diamond Jim's attempt at humor... I believe the deck has an Air Cushion Finish... However, don't hold me to the sacrificial Mayan altar if I am wrong - hahaha... Sorry - Another funny Diamond Jim joke (the deck states that it was created on a sacrificial Mayan altar)...

"Blank face double backed"?  Then it must be a four-dimensional card, since no three-dimensional card can have both a blank face and a double back.

And stop double posting.

Sure, bro, it's "Apocalyptic Finish", just like is says on the box.  And USPC recently moved a sacrificial Mayan altar to Erlanger, Kentucky, because the box also says that they were made on a sacrificial Mayan altar.  Either that, or they started printing out of South America.

Or perhaps you didn't catch Diamond Jim's humor?  Because neither statement is true.

USPC has only two finishes, standard and Magic.  All other finish names are pure marketing.  And the last time I looked, there are no sacrificial Mayan altars in the state of Kentucky.  A few redneck ones, perhaps, but no Mayan ones...  The rednecks call theirs "bars" and they sacrifice their livers and kidneys on them every day!  :))

Decent price, and this isn't really a bad place to post it since we're talking about how expensive they are and you did post it in the ISO/Sale/Trade board as well.  Maybe linking to that board's post would be better, but I'm no moderator, so I couldn't tell you for sure.

Unfortunately, even at your price, I'm not interested - it's not a compelling enough deck.  When did you get yours?  They haven't been out that long, have they?

I was going to ask the same thing. I think Ivory is Air Cushion without the ripples.(idk if I am right) someone with knowledge on stocks can you clarify this? :)
People say nothing's impossible, but I do nothing everyday.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

I remember writing about this elsewhere recently...

The texture of the cards has nothing to do with the actual finish and everything to do with the stock used.

The available stocks at USPC, as far as knowledgeable people have told me, are Aristocrat, Bicycle, Bee and the heavier Bee Casino.  Bicycle Casino is no longer available, and Tally Ho, also unavailable, has been replaced with a variant of Aristocrat.  These can be had smooth or textured, and the stock's characteristics can be changed with storage under specific temperature and humidity conditions before printing, which is why there are variants of the stocks listed.

The finishes available from USPC are simple.  Standard or Magic.  That's it.

At one time in history, there may well have been different varnishes used with the names Cambric, Linoid, Ivory, etc., but no longer.  Alex's Experimental Finish is just that, experimental, and not in release until it gets tested.  I'm sure USPC made some deal with him to compensate him for letting his deck be the guinea pig.  All those other names are simply trademarks associated with the different brands of decks.

Modern Bee decks come in Ivory or Cambric.  All that means is that the stock is smooth (Ivory) or textured (Cambric).  Normally the standard finish is used, but a CARC rep mentioned that due to the use of metallic inks on this particular deck (and it's more rare counterpart), they had to be treated with Magic Finish.  Decks like Alchemist and Alchemist X had metallic inks but were made before Magic Finish - anyone who's had one for a while can attest to how quickly the handling goes downhill on them.  But because CARC is big on the Bee name and design, they're labeled Ivory and Cambric rather than Magic and Magic.  It's probably less to do with USPC labeling restrictions now and more to do with their desire to create "authentic" Bee decks.

Modern Tally Ho decks are Linoid Finish.  Just another way of saying "textured stock and standard coating".

Modern Bicycles are made in Air Cushion or Smooth Finish.  Again, standard coating on either textured or smooth stock.  The only exception to this naming standard are the Professional Bicycles made by CARC.  They were printed on Bee stock, so they opted to call the smooth decks Ivory Finish instead of Smooth Finish.  Smooth Bikes are hard to find these days - the only ones I've seen are some late-model Cincinnati Lo-Vision decks.  They're probably still selling out the old supply, but eventually they'll make some in Kentucky, I'm sure - it will simply be a matter of whether they wish to stay with smooth stock or go Air Cushion.

Only the most modern decks, Bicycle or otherwise, that use Magic Finish are using the Magic Finish name, and mostly those are decks targeted at card performers and collectors.  Ellusionist's Performance Coating is Magic Finish's original name while it was still an experimental finish - the first deck to use said finish was the Gold Arcane.  USPC opted to rebrand the coating as Magic Finish, while E preferred the old name and stuck with it - they felt it sounded classier.  In my opinion, anyone breaking out a deck labeled Magic Finish in front of a spectator might raise their suspicions - not because the deck is different, but because the word "Magic" is on the box, which if spotted would make them think it's a trick deck even if it's totally legit.

Until a short while ago, all of E's decks with the Bicycle brand on them (as well as the Arcanes) all said "Air Cushion" on the box.  Now, some are being marked as Performance Coating, some are still marked as Air Cushion, but any decks they're making now ALL use Performance Coating.  Some labeled Air Cushion are just old stock from before Magic Finish's invention, while others are Magic Finish despite what the box says (an example of this would be the red Bicycle Series 1800 - the performance was lousy on the older decks, but now they're just as smooth-handling as any other Magic Finish deck, and the box still says it's Air Cushion).  In time, when the old stock is sold out, everything will be Performance Coating.

I hope this long-winded explanation settles any questions you may have had.

I see advertised that a certain amount of Doomsday decks were made that have a white seal. I guess the white seal is  :o "limited" :o as everyone likes to use that word. Does anyone know anything about this. Is there any other difference to go along with the white seal?

Yeah you did, but not everybody is going to go back and read about it. I honestly don't see how the silver edges makes this deck cooler. Some decks can rock the silver edges or the gilded edges but this doesn't seem to be one. :-\

You probably did but you wrote a lot about a lot so I probably missed it. Thanks for clearing it up and sorry you had to write it again.

Maybe he's using the cultural reference - the Mayans were prolific miners of silver and gold, weren't they?  Honestly, I'm hoping gilded decks are more of a fad that will die out soon rather than an growing trend...  I've said before that gilded decks are more for people who don't play cards a lot and want something pretty to look at when they aren't using them.

Yeah, it's usually a good idea to see what was written before, since there's a good chance your question was already answered.  Help end post pollution - recycle old posts!  :))

Not I, and I have no plans to do so.  It looks like a rush job from a designer too lazy to go custom.  It reminds me too much of the Merz67 decks to be of any interest to me.
