One of these days I'll get back out to the Pac. Northwest. I used to live in Oregon, and love that side of the country.

A goal of the 52+ this year is to start encouraging more regional get-togethers. Why don't you make a Seattle Playing Card Collector's Meeting?

I'd do one in NYC but it would have to be on a weekday, practically guaranteeing light attendance.

Re Seattle
If there is one we could attend in spirit - maybe send an interesting slide show or get on phone to answer questions etc.

We used to have an annual one in NYC area - usually in New Haven if that quallifies.! There is a special card showing of Albert Field collection in May in New York for 52+J members who can make it. I think we should try and have a meeting sponsored by 52+J on the same day and invite the world. The date is Monday, May 12. We could likely get a big crowd for an early evening event with trading, appraising, etc. I think the exhibition is at Columbia so a meeting near there would be great. Thoughts?

Would it be possible to set something up where the meeting is held somewhere on the campus?  The neighborhood around it can be a little dicey at night.  Either that or move the meet to a nice bar further south by at least forty blocks or so.

You're in the middle of the continent?  When did you move to Rugby, North Dakota?  :))

You should also do an Asian tour sometime soon.....  :(

Give them motivation for doing so - join 52 Plus Joker and get others near you to do the same!  :))

Of course, you could always create a gathering of collectors on your own - what's holding you back?  It's how groups like 52+J came into being - like-minded people getting together.

Not a lot of  52+J members in Winnipeg!  I do have a soft spot for the city as my father was born there (no we do not have Icelandic ancestors).  Chicago could well work out for a regional meeting. There is a big playing card/gambling auction there end of May which we might well attend and there are a lot of members in the Chicago area. Let me confirm some dates and we'll enlist Sparkz to help arrange.

More posts will follow when I do a bit more research.

By the way - neat web page on Rugby ND Don. I discovered a new verb there for my lexicon "four laned "

We are trying to get Mayor Ford out to the meeting - it is rumoured he's a closet pc collector and has been seen late at night in the woods with a well-known trader!
See you later Jason.

I want to clarify that Rob & I never hung out in the woods! Pure speculation.  :t11:

Seriously, today is the day for the card collectors meeting. We will try our hardest to 'live' update, and post images of the meeting. Check back often for updates.

Every time I see Mayor Ford on the news, I can't help but think of Chris Farley.  Exactly... I'm sure if he were in the woods with a well-known trader, "playing cards" would be the thing to get. LOL

Is that Peter McKinnon I see hiding in the back of the room? Nice pictures Lee!

You are right - that is Peter. We had a great turnout - maybe 45 to 50 people - all types - collectors, magicians, enthusiasts of all description from about age 10 to yours truly. Lots of fun - went from 2 to 5:30 and ended with gift bags gathered and packaged by Jay Rideout [CBJ] with neat loot from Dan & Dave, Encarded, PCC and others that Lee will note when he posts. Very generous of them - I even ended up with a D&D Private Reserve - how lucky is that! Got some new users for the forum and new members for 52+J. All in all a great success - got to do more of these!

I think this was a huge success!

I certainly don't know of all the people involved in making this event happen but thank you to all. Lee, Tom and Judy it was a pleasure to meet you. I was the one with the old Congress ads from the 40's. I will take you up on your offer to see similar items from your collection at some point in the future.

Jay thanks for getting us the gift bags and those who supported the event. Nice little score there...a D&D private reserve deck!

Thanks Lee for the Jerry's card and I also picked up a pair of 1860 cards from Tom and Judy.

Why is it that whenever we attend any meeting with people with like interests we have so much fun?  It was a blast and I have even found some new bff's! Thank you Jeff for providing such a great venue and even good food. Also of course Lee and Jason for making certain everything was in place. Tom and I even sold some of our Hochman Enyclopedia of Playing Cards!  Can't wait to meet again.

PS the ads are here anytime Dave!

I had an awesome time!

So.. I reached out to some people over the last couple of weeks asking if they would like to send me some decks that I would hand out today... and all I can say is WOW!

A VERY special thanks to

Paul Carpenter

Scott King

RJ Tomlinson

HOPC

Collectable Playing Cards

And in particular Dan from D&D/Art Of Play (who sent a generous amount of S&M Gold Reserve)

Thanks to those people/companies, EVERYONE went home with free decks!!!

Here are some pics I took today:

Lee talking to the crowd

Tom and Judy Dawson talking to the crowd

I think most people scored a gold S&M!  It was a great day!

Thanks again to Lee Asher for setting this up, The Browser's Den for hosting, and of course... Tom and Judy Dawson for everything they do.

I look forward to the next one!!

Looks like a great time...  Lee told me he would give me tips on how to set one of those meetings up here in the Northwest.  I would definitively be willing to help but also would need some help. Let's see if we can get a Seattle meeting going this year

It looks like a lot of fun and I deeply regret missing it to finish up a project. Apparently, I was always taught that "work = money to buy things (ie. playing cards)". I should now learn that skipping work can get me free stuff.   ;)

I hope there's another one later on this year in Toronto.

I feel your pain. I've missed many things the past few months. In the end, it will all be worth it.
